What caused ED to take a rightward turn (and what makes it under the Authoritarian Wingnuttery category)?[edit]

ED was always filled with articles that were deliberately designed to offend everyone but it seems ED has become a lot more homophobic, misogynist, transphobic, racist, and seemingly more pandering to the alt-right in recent years. What made it take such a rightward turn that it arguably could be considered a far-right website?24.205.9.236 (talk) 17:33, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

I would venture to guess that as time wore on, those who were acting tongue in cheek slowly were phased out by those who weren't, and that such a demographic shift in membership and leadership was possibly as result of the site's style attracting certain demographics. A similar shift occured on 4chan's /pol/, and the site as a whole to some extent. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 19:27, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
I think the "offend everyone" mantra is just not a good or healthy mantra to begin with as it allows bigots to take over and scare away those that were maybe more well-intentioned. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 19:31, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) 100% true. ED's original humor, for all its faults (its many, many faults), predicated itself on being for the lulz (insincere). And impartial for that matter. But around the time that sort of thing started getting old for me, people started showing up on the website who genuinely held white nationalist viewpoints. I know it doesn't seem like there's much difference between the two but for someone familiar with the environment there was a palpable shift.--"Shut up, Brx." 19:33, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
And some long time users and allies of the site, such as Weev, made their own shifts towards white supremacy. And the more calming liberal presences either moved on(Girlvinyl, the original owner of the site, and her cabal of admins) or moved on in a more figurative sense (Old Dirty B-Tard).--"Shut up, Brx." 19:37, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
I think a good deal also had to do with the influx of Gamergaters from the Chans and Reddit flocking to ED to document the whole thing, and with it brought their viewpoints that ultimately affected the site into what it is. 4chan's rightward turn coincided with 2008-2012ish, when alt-right forerunners (Patriots old and new, conspiracy theorists, Tea Partiers, white supremacists/white nationalists/neo-nazis), united under their shared racial animus against Obama, flocked to places like 4chan to promote their worldviews without being exposed as bigots by the online community at large (since you don't have to register on 4chan to post). As 4chan went rightward thanks to them, said users flocked to sites that had similar overlap, ED being among them. Could other styles of wingnuttery (Conservative, Libertarian, Nationalist) also apply in addition to Authoritarian (what makes it Authoritarian Wingnuttery anyway)24.205.9.236 (talk) 06:02, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much for listing the sole remaining URL for this site[edit]

Now I might have to sue you for the brain cells I just lost visiting it lmao --Goatspeed. All holidays matter🎄CircularREmail2.gifasoning🎄Steal my ideas 18:48, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Could use a rewrite[edit]

A massive one at that. ED, like /pol/, was never not a fascist shithole. The article buys the hype of this cool impartial bastion of Internet comedy, but the schtick was always bullshit. I've already expended more effort than it deserves writing this, but my suggestions include removing the obvious ED terminology ("unwarranted self-importance," "unfunny"), getting into some of the site's "claims to fame" (like that time that one family got harassed with gore of their daughter), and removing the current URL. Fuckeverything (talk) 22:08, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

People often fail to distinguish saying racist shit purely to offend people, and saying racist shit because you hold sincere racist beliefs. Not saying the former is any better or isn’t still racism, but there’s a difference. I know next to nothing about ED, but it seems like the former.
If unfunny is an ED thing it’s a RW thing as well, used to be in our block reason dropdown. No idea how true the unwarranted self-importance thing is. Removing the URL serves no purpose; I’d guess not many people click on it, and more may search it up out of curiosity if it’s removed. Christopher (talk) 22:19, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
My impression of ED is that it underwent the same transformation that /pol/ kind of did (from more edgelord-y joke shit to the more cesspool "how many n-words can we cram in one sentence" type of place it is now). Even more so actually, because I can't remember when /pol/ wasn't full of edgelords. Recall that ED started off as an extension of LiveJournal drama groups; as such ED in 2005 looks quite innocent and tame (well, as innocent and tame that you can be while including sex and furries, because LiveJournal) compared to what it would become.
ED really hasn't made any mainstream news since about 10 years ago. So it would take someone who is familiar with the less known dramas to trawl inside ED and document anything notable. And anything brought up would have to be important enough for it for RW to care too, since this site's purpose isn't documenting Internet drama. Showing the average editor "meh" on this subject, this article is essentially the same article as what was written in 2012 with a bit of added notes on when they went up and down. I couldn't find what you mentioned in Google, maybe you have more details? PanGalacticGargleBlaster (talk) 01:03, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Time of Death: June 2024.[edit]

Given how all the new sites for ED keep dying rapidly, I think it's safe to say that ED is now, finally, after a painful 19 years, dead. A somebody. (talk) 00:09, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

We should remove the "good, bad, and ugly" sections.[edit]

I don't think we should be shilling for Encyclopedia fucking Dramatica, and it's dubious to make grand proclamations that some content is "good" or "bad." All of it is pretty fucking bad, IMO, but I'd rather not make that proclamation over something so subjective. Why not rename the section "content"? Carthage (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

That's a good idea. Let's go for it. I am thinking of merging the "good" and "bad" sections together without changing the info and remaining neutral. Change the subheading "ugly" to a more appropriate title, and voilà, done. However, I am not very experienced with editing and would appreciate it if someone with more expertise could make the proper changes.--Daniiieeeel (talk) 19:13, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
