Is J.D. Vance an Antisemite?[edit]
|
This page claims that J.D. Vance is an antisemite, based on a couple tweets he's made spreading conspiracy theories about George Soros, who is ethnically - but not religiously - Jewish. In my opinion, this claim is preposterous, as criticizing one person - or even an organization within a group (Does not liking ISIS or Hamas automatically make one Islamophobic?) - does not necessarily mean that the criticizer hates everyone in that person's external groups. No matter what your opinion is of J.D. Vance, it is wrong to spread malicious lies about him. PeaRidge62 (talk) 00:03, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

- I am now being called a "concern troll" by User: Carthage. May I remind you what the official definition of that phrase is?
Someone who posts to an internet forum or newsgroup, claiming to share its goals while deliberately working against those goals, typically, by claiming "concern" about group plans to engage in productive activity, urging members instead to attempt some activity that would damage the group's credibility, or alternatively to give up on group projects entirely.

- I agree with you. I think that Soros hate can be a dogwhistle for antisemitism but isn't intrinsically one, and in this case I don't believe Vance is an antisemite. Vance seems to be Peter Thiel's man in Washington, and as many things as Thiel may be (including other flavors of prejudiced such as misogynist), I don't think "antisemite" is one. I might have said otherwise about Vance if his "defense" of Nick Fuentes amounted to more than just "unban him from Twitter", while at the same time they were sparring with each other. I also looked at his response to this questionnaire from Jewish Insider. Elsewhere, and not necessarily related to the antisemitism issue in itself either, Vance has endorsed Tucker Carlson's version of The Great Replacement theory (see here), which I do think would warrant mentioning in the page. Carlson is somebody who I believe does use Soros hate as an antisemitic dogwhistle, as has become much more clear in his rhetoric and actions over the past two years. I think however, what I'm evaluating here is intent instead of impact, and it's possible Vance could be "impactfully antisemitic, without antisemitic intent". - For what it's worth, there's an op-ed in Haaretz that argues this very point - that Vance, while not directly antisemitic, is feeding into an antisemitic populist right-wing narrative of there being "true Americans" and "not true Americans" (with Jews, of course, being in the later category)... as well as using "anti-globalist" language that draws on antisemitic tropes (the Soros shit obviously being in this category). From my perspective, there indeed is a strong whiff of the Völkisch movement (as the op-ed implies) in modern Trumpism and other far-right movements. For someone like Vance, it may be more of an act to get some votes, but as Kurt Vonnegut noted, "we are what we pretend to be", so intent really doesn't matter here. - What I agree with OP about is Vance shouldn't be described as an antisemite in-text. Subjectively, I don't find it useful. But I can see why others may want to retain. Chillpilled (talk) 02:15, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Chameleon[edit]
Bit difficult to write on this guy's stances when in his heart of hearts he has none. He just changed his abortion stance so he can be Trump's running mate. In 2016 voted for Evan McMullin because he was that turned off from Trump. Chillpilled (talk) 00:40, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
The couch thing[edit]
Can we not do couch jokes? They're so played out, and they're based on a completely false rumor. We're better than that. Chef Moosolini’s Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 17:50, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
