Messing with talk pages[edit]

Hi! You're new, so I'll be nice about it. Talk pages are considered community property on RW, and each individual person's contributions to a talk page belong to them. Unlike article space, where editing other peoples' writing is the whole idea, it is not acceptable to make substantive changes to someone else's talk page comments or blank an entire section because you don't agree with it. Please actually do take a few minutes to review the Community Standards. Ochotonaprincepsnot a pokémon 1013 points 01:09, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand what you're talking about

If you click on the link I put in my comment, you'll see a page showing the Saloon bar, and two columns. The yellow column on the left was the page before you edited it. The green column on the right is the page after you replaced almost 36,000 characters with your short comment. Maybe it was an accident, maybe it was on purpose; that doesn't matter, because it's trivial to fix. But please be aware that you do not have a blank check to just edit any page on the site how you want. Ochotonaprincepsnot a pokémon 1013 points 01:25, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

talk pages[edit]

How do I make my comments fit in with the others? How do I put my name in afterwards with a link and stuff?

When editing a talk page, take a look at the formatting for a guide. The use of a colon, like I did here, indents the conversation. Indent it one more colon for each reply, to make it easy to parse. And please sign your talk page edits with four tildes: ~~~~. Thanks!--ADtalkModerator 01:14, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Okay. Please do not undo my changesReligionisforidiots (talk) 01:15, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
I think your changes make the article demonstrably worse. I'd rather you not make them, because articles should move from being bad to being good, not vice-versa.--ADtalkModerator 01:16, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
What was wrong with my edits? Do you deny that Martin Luther King jr. was a Christian? Do you deny that Christianity is responsible for some of the greatest atrocities of all time? Have you ever looked at a Bible? Didn't you see the verses on killing children and taking slaves? Look at the link on my home page. Learn.Religionisforidiots (talk)
It's rather more complicated than you appear to think. For example, it become de rigeur some time ago for modern evangelical Christians to separate out what they call the "moral laws" of the Old Testament of the Bible from the rest of the mitzvot. This stems in great part from Paul's guidance in the New Testament that Christians did not have to obey all of Hebrew law. So while you can ham-handedly try to belabor individual Christians with that, it's frankly a little silly, and more likely belongs in the articles on the religion itself. After all, we can't insert that paragraph into every article on every Christian, yes? Generally, broad criticisms of a religion belong on that religion's page, not on the page of one particular adherent - particularly when adding it to that adherent's page is in the form of a poorly-written and bizarre smear against a hero.--ADtalkModerator 01:26, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Have you never looked at Revelations? And how can he be a hero if he is so dedicated to his false beliefs? He mentioned god or Jesus constantly. Are we not Atheists?--Religionisforidiots (talk) 01:29, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
This is not an atheist website, no. Theists of any stripe are welcome here, and so are their edits (as long as those edits improve articles towards our mission).
Merely believing something that is wrong does not discount a person's deeds in their life. That is asinine. Gandhi had some crazy beliefs, and was also a theist - yet his nonviolent leadership helped liberate a nation. The intern who took a bullet during the struggle with Congresswoman Gabby Gifford's gunman was a Christian, but that doesn't change the fact that when shots ran out, he ran towards them. People can be more than the sum of their beliefs.--ADtalkModerator 01:39, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
I'd like to add that you really should take a read through the newcomer's guide and the Community Standards so you have an understanding of what it is that we do here, because you clearly have an incorrect idea of what this place is for. This should lessen the friction between you and the community, because you'll get a better understanding of how we do things. Ochotonaprincepsnot a pokémon 1013 points 01:44, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Not every single Christian interprets the Bible in a literal fashion. You still haven't justified why random trolling on the MLK page should stay, only an appeal to Christianity=bad. Ochotonaprincepsnot a pokémon 1013 points 01:31, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Throwing in an anti-Christianity rant into the middle of an article about MLKJr. is going off-topic unless you have specific info about bad things King Jr. did personally. We have plenty of anti-theist stuff already. I'm not AD, and I didn't revert your edits, so I'm not speaking for him. But if he hadn't, I would've, and these are the reasons I would give you if I had done it. This is not just an amateur we-hate-Christians site; we have higher standards. Ahem[edit]

I await your, no doubt brilliant, response. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:30, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
