The Mother of all Short Squeezes, or MOASS for short, is an apocalyptic event where the stock value of a select group of companies, referred to as "meme stocks"[note 1] will dramatically increase. People who believe in MOASS call themselves "apes". Apes believe a vast conspiracy of short sellers, investment apps, and hedge funds are attempting to suppress the price of meme stocks by using shorts.
Here’s how it works:
- Buy stock in a meme stock
- Wait for MOASS to happen
- Profit!
Origins[edit]
In late 2020 and early 2021 Redditors at r/WallStreetBets began aggressively investing in GameStop, a failing video game retailer. Because GameStop was failing, hedge funds had made investments that relied on the stock price decreasing, called "shorts".
- The redditors buy GameStop stock caused the hedge funds that had invested in shorts to lose money.
- The price of GameStop stock reached its peak on January 28.
- On January 28, investment app Robinhood barred the purchase of GameStop stock, an action which attracted substantial criticism.
Notes[edit]
- ↑ The "canonical" list of meme stocks include failing video game retailer GameStop, now-bankrupt furniture seller Bed Bath and Beyond, and failing movie theater chain AMC Theatres
