Category talk:Para-fascism

This label is giving me issues on the wiki on its application. It always came off to me as a cop-out way to call basically a lot of right-wing people and concepts fascists without actually calling them as such. What's the difference between this label, Category:Alt-lite, and Category:Alt-right? I can't find much results searching the term on search engines, Google and DuckDuckGo (in fact, searching the term just brings up our pages...) --It's-a me, πLeftyGreenMario!π 02:13, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- I agree completely. Chef Moosoliniβs Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 03:33, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- There were several BoNs in the past couple of years who simply loved to add the fascists and para-fascists categories to everyone to the right of the freaking middle, thus completely watering down the term. I suspect that the "para-fascists" label derives from that. I think a thorough analysis of this category's application be done, and maybe even a proposal for removal. βcosmikdebris talk stalk 03:41, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- I can see that it can be problematic, but the term is used in academia. Besides the paper by Aristotle Kallis on this page that I cited, Kallis also cites a book that uses the term (Salazar's dictatorship and European fascism: problems of interpretation by AntΓ³nio Costa Pinto[1]). Searching JSTOR and Google Books turns up some other people using the term:[2][3]
- "The Blueshirt Movement, 1932-5: Ireland's Fascists?" by Mike Cronin
- "The New Order in South Africa" by Elizabeth Landis
- "Staging the Nation's Rebirth" by Roger Griffin (in the book Fascism and theatre)
- Jeroen Vandade (pp. 113, 260, 275 in Translation Under Fascism edited by C. Rundle & K. Sturge)
- Kenneth Lamott, as cited in Friendly Fascism by Bertram Gross (p. 335)
- I always support deleting category changes that are not supported by the text of the page in question. BoNs coming by just to add/remove categories should usually be reverted. Bongolian (talk) 03:49, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, the term actually does show up pretty frequently in Google Scholar searches. Several sources seem to point to Roger Griffin as the creator of the modern consensus, though as pointed out it was used earlier than that. Alas, paywalls prohibit further research, though some available free links to reports help out here.
- I don't mind the category personally as long as it is used properly. It clearly is not. From what I gather, it is more meant to describe regimes that had similarities to fascism but did not meet all the criteria most academics would consider for a regime to be fully fascist. Examples in the free link include "Vichy France, Francoist Spain, and Metaxasist Greece", none of which are included now. What's "eugenics" doing in this category? "Black brute", huh? This should not be a catch-all category for the entire right. BobJohnson (talk) 03:54, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
