The Houthis are an Islamist political movement in Yemen, infamous for their rise during the Yemeni civil war and for being proxies funded by the Islamic government of Iran. The movement began in 1994, named after the Houthi tribe native to Yemen and composed primarily of Zaidi Shias.
The Houthi movement was named after Hussein al-Houthi, who was assassinated in 2004. Because of the unstable political atmosphere of Yemen and the incompetence of the United States, the party grew from 100,000 members in 2010 to 200,000 members in 2020.
