Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu wa Za Banga (born Joseph-Desiré Mobutu) (1930–1997), also known by his initials MSS, was the dictator of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (previously known as Zaire). If you want to know why the term kleptocrat exists, thank him. Before he became president of Zaire, he served as a military officer and as the 2nd President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1965 to 1971.
Dictatorship[edit]
Under Seko’s leadership, Zaire saw several violent armed conflicts and two wars break out among them and their neighboring countries.
Downfall[edit]
Taking a country with him[edit]
The removal of Mobutu brought the country into a complete and utter collapse, as tensions with Rwanda would lead to the Second Congo War, or the African World War, which became the deadliest conflict of the 21st century.
Legacy[edit]
It’s clear that the DRC has not recovered from the fuckery that Mobutu caused, and his successors seem to keep a strain of corruption that other African leaders have.
