I must've missed you when you first signed up—hello, Madeleine! Are you enjoying your time here? Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:29, 5 February 2009 (EST)
- Hello! Yes I'm enjoying rationalwiki, thank you! I will contribute when I can, usually in debates initially rather than editing articles, I suspect.
- PS - "Madeleinebiscuits" was the first username that came to mind when I discovered "Bunchanumbers" was taken (since I'd been called Bunchanumbers in my anonymity so many times before registering); I didn't realise before now how gender-specific the username seems, and in the wrong way. I got the idea of Madeleine Biscuits from Proust, but just so everyone knows now, I am male! Madeleinebiscuits 05:26, 5 February 2009 (EST)
- It's good to hear that you're enjoying things. And I look forward to hearing you in debates. : ) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 22:53, 5 February 2009 (EST)
- Hehe, "Bunchanumbers" may have been taken, but "Bunchofnumbers is not ; ) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 22:53, 5 February 2009 (EST)
- Well, that's true. Nobody called me "Bunchofnumbers," though! :-) Madeleinebiscuits 07:23, 6 February 2009 (EST)

It comes as a blur, your first few days at a wiki. One day, you are new, just coming into the community, and the next day, things change. Now you can see the RW world with new buttons, and have joined the lowest of the low ranks of Sysop. Congratulations. Please read This guide ĴαʊΆʃÇä₰ expensive philosophers affiliate me...
- Thanks for this! I still feel new and can't imagine I'll have the desire to use any of these extra privileges for quite a while - still earning my respect, still finding my way around - but I do appreciate this recognition and will now be extra careful not to visit RW when I'm too drunk. - I trust you enough to feel confident that you deserve sysop powers (notwithstanding the 200 other sysops on the wiki ĴαʊΆʃÇä₰ expensive philosophers affiliate me...
Embedding a URL[edit]
Hey Madeleine. I'm thinking you don't know how to embed a URL in the wiki? If you have a URL, say, http://www.rationalwiki.com, and you want to have it appear as a highlighted link, you simply place it in square brackets, and if you leave a space after the URL and add a word or words, the URL disappears and the words are all that's displayed - like this. It works the same for URL's of any length. Best, DogP 11:00, 9 February 2009 (EST)
- Ah - fantastic, thanks for that! Madeleinebiscuits 11:01, 9 February 2009 (EST)
- You're very welcome. Here to help. DogP 11:02, 9 February 2009 (EST)
Userpage[edit]
Hey, Madeleine, could you make a userpage? The red link is a bit of an eyesore. Thanks, Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 12:25, 9 February 2009 (EST)
- Done. Madeleinebiscuits 12:32, 9 February 2009 (EST)
Titian & Conservapedia[edit]
I wouldn't get too depressed just yet. It's a long time till the next election, and the polls have been up and down like a bride's nighty in the last year. And if the Tories make pre-election promises on the environment and social services, then they'd be suicidal to break them in their first term. First term governments are normally pretty good at delivering on their election platform, like when Labour gave control of interest rates to the Bank of England in the first week of being elected (although the Euro referendum disappeared like a fart in a hurricane). Any way, I see Labour as being like the Tories in their last years in power. Too long in power and out of touch with the people. And Gordon Brown is as ineffectual as John Major! Bondurant 06:52, 12 February 2009 (EST)
- Thanks for this. It seems though that the Tories are taking the opportunity of the recession to pull back promises on the environment and social services, realising that they don't need to pretend to be liberal anymore, because public opinion against Labour has hardened enough, and also the superficial Tory rebranding has worked on a subliminal level for so many people. That Cameron chap being nice etc. I do find it depressing - I can see tendencies emerging where various Conservative councils are testing the water, like seeing whether cutting funding for arts centres gets a big reaction and this kind of thing. And if they are elected in 2010, they'll be able to cut public services all over the place, blaming whatever they like on the "excesses of a Labour government, the kind of thinking we know now has failed" or whatever (not a real quote but it's the kind of thing). They've already withdrawn an early promise to match Labour's spending, stepping far more clearly to the right behind their friendly facade, and I wonder how many voters have noticed. Madeleinebiscuits 07:10, 12 February 2009 (EST)
- Interesting. To be honest, I hadn't noticed a change in policy from the Tories, but sometimes you have to listen to what they don't say as much as to what they do. Certainly, what they aren't saying is how they'd fix everything that has gone wrong. Events have developed their own inertia and it's difficult to see what anyone can do right now. For that, I give Gordo some benefit, but I'd be happier if he could at least admit to his role in leading us into recession. As far as I can see, he's never admitted to doing anything wrong. He's our version of George W. Bush! Bondurant 07:54, 12 February 2009 (EST)
- Well I actually agree with Gordon Brown's original morals and ethics, but we're seeing none of the young student Brown in the Prime Minister version. George Bush is an unfair comparison - the only overlap is that both always seem(ed) out of their depth and with other people pulling their strings. Brown's major downfall is his flawed public persona, both physically and verbally. All the larger public want is someone who oozes confidence, much like Cameron. It's all about branding - if Brown had great charisma he'd be number one. I think this is what pisses me off most; hardly anyone really knows what Cameron truly believes, nor what Brown and his team are actually achieving. Madeleinebiscuits 08:03, 12 February 2009 (EST)
