Wow, a nice fresh talk page. And a person who likes to be talked to. So, how are you doing, TheoryOfPractice? Wow, I just noticed, we always abbreviate your username as "ToP", but it should be "TOP"! Well dang my horse clusters! ħumanUser talk:Human 01:15, 31 January 2009 (EST)

Thanks for fixing my crappy spelling. Though I would point out that DDos is short for Distributed Denial of Service attack, and it was that I was refering to. Sorry making a load of work for you to do man.DSFARGEG 18:57, 3 February 2009 (EST)

hey thanks[edit]

Hey! Thanks for sysop-ing me. I'll try to do a good job. Also, while you're at it,you should look into Reuleaux. He's my brother and he's the one who introduced me to RationalWiki. Whatever qualities of mine compelled you to make me a sysop, I can guarantee that he's just as good in those areas of expertise, if not better. Once again thanks and hopefully this will not backfire you later! Just kidding. Maybe. YB indeed! 23:42, 12 February 2009 (EST)

Whoa, whoa! Slow down. Maybe you should look at http://imtehkenny.blogspot.com first. PubliusTalk 14:48, 15 February 2009 (EST)

I already said his blog was cool...and TK would be crafty enough to take out a fake blog, write all kinds of cool shit in it for months just to fool us and get on our wiki and into our Precious Bodily Fluids. He's like that. TheoryOfPractice 14:50, 15 February 2009 (EST)
Yeah, I'm slow. But I vote for benefit-of-doubt (I was accidentally initialed RW after all) PubliusTalk 14:51, 15 February 2009 (EST)

Just curious...[edit]

What's with the anti-religion rage lately? I mean, did some JWs wake you up early too many time? Not that I have a problem with it, just curious. Z3rotalk 18:04, 25 February 2009 (EST)

Yeah. I was, until pretty recently, pretty tolerant toward religious folk. Maybe it's because I live in the US now and am more exposed to religion as a normalised part of public discourse and sometimes get dirty looks from new friends and colleagues for saying things that would never be considered offensive in the strongly-atheist milieu where I used to live; maybe it was all the stupid praying at the inauguration; Maybe it's being aware that in this country you can believe that dinosaurs roamed the Earth at the same time as humans and run for VP. But I've lost all sense of patience for religion as something that belongs in the public sphere in any way whatsoever, or as something that is compatible with being a rational, thinking individual. I can see how changing scene to a religious area of America (Jesusland?) might sour your taste for both religion and the nation at whole, but to be fair, not all religious folk in America are crazy bible thumpers *hides from angry atheists*. User:Ttony21/sig2 19:33, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Same here. I agree with Ttony. Consider, for example, Barack Obama. --"C, U Rthe warm, unifying card game. 19:34, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Tony, I'm aware of that--as much as I'm aware of the fact that the word "God" now appears on all of my money. CUR--are you talking about the same Barack Obama who mentioned non-believers once during in his inaugural address yet also mentions "God" in every single speech that he gives--and who had that fat nutjob lead a prayer at his coronation inauguration? TheoryOfPractice 19:38, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Just wonder how much of that (god stuff) was political expediency? ToastToastand marmite 19:41, 25 February 2009 (EST)
(EC)Unfortunately, if he doesn't do that, he ends up in a rather sticky situation. Like it or not, the religious right hold enough power to block any changes he wants to make, so he must meet them halfway. I think he hates it as much as you do. And if someone says, 'Oh god', does that really mean anything? No. --"C, U Rthe warm, unifying card game. 19:42, 25 February 2009 (EST)

(UNDENT). if someone says, 'Oh god', does that really mean anything? That, my young friend, depends on context. It can mean an awful lot if everything is going right. TheoryOfPractice 19:44, 25 February 2009 (EST)

Cat. That is all I have to say. --"C, U Rthe warm, unifying card game. 19:45, 25 February 2009 (EST)

That's kind of disturbing, actually. TheoryOfPractice 19:50, 25 February 2009 (EST)

But seriously, I understand Obama's need to play to that crowd; but the fact remains: he has to play to that crowd. Not the crowd who believe in God and use that as a way to try and explain a complicated world to themselves and to navigate their way through a life that can be brutally unfair; but the crowd who invoke the spectre of fear as a means of social and moral control, screaming that a big bearded white man in the sky will smite me if I suck a little cock, or if a woman gets an abortion, and who use their beliefs as a means by which to stifle science and basic rationality. TheoryOfPractice 19:49, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Are you suggesting a reform or just criticising the system? It's true that Obama has to make that crowd of people happpy as well, especially in a land when religion is so ingrained into the psyches of many citizens, but it is a democracy after all. And compared to some other nations, we are fairly secularised already. Would you prefer if it was an entirely atheist nation? User:Ttony21/sig2 20:08, 25 February 2009 (EST)
I'm merely a visitor here, so I'm not about to tell this country how to govern itself, but the French model of laicité strikes me as the type of system I'd prefer to live under. TheoryOfPractice 20:10, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Little confused on the difference between laïcité and separation of church and state. I believe it means that Obama would not be allowed to publicly address his faith and we would have to remove tax-exemption from religious institutions. But I can't imagine walking into school with a religious pendant and recieving punishment for it (although that's been an issue here too if I'm understanding correctly that this is a large issue in France). But it seems just as wrong as a theocracy, with the ruling religion in question being atheism. User:Ttony21/sig2 20:20, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Just to add on, I also notice that gay marriage still isn't legal in France...secularised? User:Ttony21/sig2 20:27, 25 February 2009 (EST)
would that Atheism was the creed (NOT "religion"). The nutjobs could do what they want in the corner as long as they don't try to convert anyone else. Oh hell words, words, can't find enough. ToastToastand marmite 20:30, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Tony, atheism isn't a religion. And i didn't say I wanted to follow the Frogs on every aspect of their social policy. For an interesting look at the question of religious paraphernalia and schools in France, read Joan Scott, The Politics of the Veil. TheoryOfPractice 20:31, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Well I might argue that first part a bit, but that book sounds pretty interesting (googled for a brief summary). Sorry to have continued the discussion on your talk page, just found the opinion intriguing. User:Ttony21/sig2 20:38, 25 February 2009 (EST)
