Apparently, I'm striving to make this site like an inverse Conservapedia. So be it, here's my Conservapedia-esque Parthian shot. Any place that prefers to keep User:MarcusCicero over User:SusanG needs its head seriously examined. Lets weigh the options, shall we? On the one hand, we have Susan who was the only one who could be bothered to write site policies and on the other we have MC who, and lets be fair to him, is a complete and utter twat interested only in provoking endless TK-style flame wars.
I'm too personally involved to do it myself, so I'll do the only honourable thing and leave. However, may I suggest that someone institute a rule against insulting other users. MC has the same problem TK has, he simply can't be civil to anyone for more than five minutes at a time. But, whatever, I have work to do and reading whatever drivel he'll write to angry up my blood next isn't helping me do it.? Ajax[edit]
Are you very familiar with Ajax programming? Any tips on good reference guides? Preferably on line? tmtoulouse annoy 14:51, 19 August 2008 (EDT)
- I've done a bit. I have an extremely useful tip, which is to use this. XMLHTTPRequest is THE most pathetically specified and implemented thing I've ever seen, paralleled only in shittiness by Netscape LiveConnect. It really helps that someone else has gone round discovering in which ways it is broken in each browser and created a work around, not to mention not having to worry about the idiotic Active X invocations you have to make for Internet Explorer (Curses Be Upon It.)
- Other than having a working XMLHTTPRequest object to hand, there's nothing to it. It's just javascript where every so often you go and get more data from the server. Of course, being an old fuddy duddy, I like to pack all my data in to binary structs and parse them on the client, which sets me somewhat apart from the "Bandwidth is free, CPU time is plentiful and XML is the only tool in my box" school of "programming" today's kiddies engage in. This may mean I'm not the best person to ask. --JeevesMkII 15:04, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Random block reason[edit]
The problem is that the block list doesnt pass through the wiki parser. Try blocking using it to see if the block reason parses the text? tmtoulouse annoy 15:06, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- Why didn't I think of that? Now I have to undelete everything :D --JeevesMkII 15:08, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- It does parse in the text displayed to the user. When they try and edit while blocked. tmtoulouse annoy 15:14, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- That's something I guess, but it's not really quite there. I suppose I could write some javascript to do it, but that'd probably be overkill. --JeevesMkII 15:16, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- Nothing is ever overkill! Let me take a look at the php code for blocking to see how hard it would be to pass it through the parser first. tmtoulouse annoy 15:17, 5 September 2008 (EDT)

IE is painful. tmtoulouse annoy 17:25, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- Yeah, everything works except the option that gets appended to the list has no text. It has a value, so if you select the empty space you get the randomly chosen block reason... It's weird. There's probably some arcance IE only property I need to set. --JeevesMkII 17:27, 5 September 2008 (EDT)

Not style sheets[edit]
See the extensions have this terrible quality that any text you output from them goes through several stages of html preproccessing. It screws up any scripting you put in it because it adds things like pre tags, amp, etc. I am trying to "encode" the text that is submitted by the extension, and then "decode" after the preproccessing so that it outputs the raw html. Well my solution overextended beyond just my extension code and created some fun artifacts. tmtoulouse annoy 17:22, 17 September 2008 (EDT)
- How entertaining the MediaWiki processing pipeline must be. Do I detect a Cascade of Attention Deficit Teenagers? --JeevesMkII 17:25, 17 September 2008 (EDT)
- It feels like, I still don't understand the pipeline very clearly. From what I can figure special characters and white space are processed last, preceded by the text in extensions. So some raw html works fine, others don't. It is fits and starts with difficult logical flow. Trying to backtrack text in an extension through the mediawiki parser can also be fun since it has to be recursively parsed. To me this sums up my experience with mediawiki. The most honest comment I have seen on a function yet:
"//This code is a complete nightmare and half of it is gibberish someone should just rewrite the whole thing"

Star Wars[edit]
Hello, I've only been on this wiki for a few days and have a few questions:
- Is this site only to parody Conservapedia?
- Is that why Star Wars was deleted?
and
- Just out of curiosity, what is the reference to master of puppets (above) mean?
Thanks!--Der Meister des Marionettestalk! 19:28, 7 October 2008 (EDT)
- To answer you questions in order, No it isn't just to take the piss out of Conservapedia although that tends to be the major activity by volume. I deleted the star wars page because someone tagged it with the mission doubt template, and it obviously wasn't on mission. You can read more about what rationalwiki is about here. Basically, you should be able to broadly fit your article in to one of those three categories. There are some traditional exceptions to this rule, see goat. As for your third question, I'm not really sure what you're talking about, could you be more specific? --JeevesMkII 19:36, 7 October 2008 (EDT)
- Oh, are you talking about this "[[user:<yourname|doesn't work]])."? That's a test of a bit of javascript I wrote to insert a person's username dynamically in to the page. Anyone who visits this page will see their own user name. --JeevesMkII 19:39, 7 October 2008 (EDT)
Lol! Oh! I was just surprised to see my user name up there on something that was irrelevant to anything I might be doing. Thanks for the help! I've been on Wikipedia for about a year, recently banned off of Confarceapedia, and seemed to take a liking to this format. If you can do me a favor and let me know before you delete an article so I can have a chance to bring it within standards (unless, of course, it's so far out of wack that the subject matter doesn't conform). Appreciate the insight! Cheers!--Der Meister des Marionettestalk! 19:45, 7 October 2008 (EDT)
Sorry to keep bothering you, but could the Star Wars article be put in the fun:namespace? I had some of my boys rolling when they read it (or should that be left to Uncyclopedia)?--Der Meister des Marionettestalk! 19:56, 7 October 2008 (EDT)
- If you really want it to be, I suppose. I've perpetrated some odd things in fun in the past. Nobody much minds what goes in there. Definitely seems to be more of an uncyclopedia thing to be honest though. --JeevesMkII 20:00, 7 October 2008 (EDT)

Charisma of brick?[edit]
Here you said that Andy "has the charisma of a brick". As an avid follower of all brick kind and a keeper of many pet bricks, I find this comment extremely offensive to bricks in general. Granted, they stand there, do little, and look a little glum most of the time, but to say that Messr Schlafly has charisma even approaching this admittedly low standard is an insult to bricks of all ages and all nationalities! Surely there is something, somewhere more appropriate to compare his lack of personal charisma, and/or possibly hygine to (perhaps slasher-movie actors are suitably low enough, I'm currently undecided). ArmondikoVtheist 20:38, 21 October 2008 (EDT)
- I agree, many bricks, while immobile and untalkative (if only teh assfly were!), have an innate warmth, a cherry-red glow about them, a solidity... and they make great landfill! ħuman 04:10, 22 October 2008 (EDT)

- Hrm, I think writing (or more likely, copy-pasting) a naked propaganda piece about hezbollah and expressing the opinion that gay people are "sexual deviants" is a bit more than "bias." The metapedia wandals are bad enough, putting up with another group of religious nutters is beyond the pail. --JeevesMkII 16:47, 21 November 2008 (EST)
Your business.[edit]
I don't know why you fear some Internet discussion could have destroyed your business at a stroke. May I suggest you work at making your business safer, perhaps look for another line of business that is safer. You can try running a safer business as well as your current one or instead of your current one. You know more about your business than I do. Don't pay too much attention to this. - You're right of course, and in a year both we and the market will be in a good position to diversify, but we can't do that right now. Of course, this wasn't just some internet discussion either, this is Nokia announcing essentially their strategy for the coming year. If they had chosen a radical departure from where they'd previously been heading, which was a possibility considering some of the other things I know about them, I might have been in trouble. As it is, everything turned out fine. Personally, I'm looking forward to Google's Android platform maturing and perhaps releasing some reasonable products that people will want to buy. A good competitor to Nokia in the mass market smartphone space will make my life much easier. --JeevesMkII 12:00, 2 December 2008 (EST)

Its like most unix-adminy things, I know enough to get it running but I'd want a double check of what I'd done if I were running it in some kind of mission critical environment. Do you have a question? --JeevesMkII 22:56, 31 December 2008 (EST)
- I am looking at setting up something on the new server, but I am confused about how well squid would play with multiple websites on the same server. If I am hosting say, RationalWiki, RationalWikiWiki, a personal website, and something like RationalBlogs, how hard is it to get squid to work with all the various domains and what not. tmtoulouse 02:46, 1 January 2009 (EST)
- I suspect squid is not the droid you're looking for. mod_mem_cache and/or mod_disk_cache might be up your street. I'm not sure if any of these will achieve the desired effect however, since I think mediawiki might hit the database for the entire query just to check if the content has changed since the last request. I could be pleasantly surprised by the code however, but the rest of it has that "authored by kiddies" feel, so simple optimisations like "if we have an etag header, check the last update time first before fetching the world" might well pass them by. --JeevesMkII 03:08, 1 January 2009 (EST)

Got a little time to help?[edit]

- Sure, what do you need? --JeevesMkII 11:42, 7 January 2009 (EST)
- I am noticing a lot of connection time outs, and I think others are too. The server is not under any load at all so it has to be further up the chain (I think). My best guess is that the server is behind a relatively cheap router. I don't know much about routers, are they fairly limited in simultanious connections? Would that be a likely source for the bottleneck? 130.113.218.226 13:03, 7 January 2009 (EST)
- Unless we're talking about something really stupid, like the router is doing NAT (in which case it could be overflowing a state table) there really ought to be no practical limit on what the router can sensibly do other than its CPU time. Although, looking at the reverse DNS of rationalwiki.com... Oh dear. OK, maybe the router is doing NAT? --JeevesMkII 17:13, 7 January 2009 (EST)
- An interesting experiment you might try, add "KeepAlive Off" to your httpd.conf, it'll be lousy for performance but TCP connections will go away much faster. If that improves matters, it's almost certainly a problem with using a crummy consumer grade router. The symptoms of the problem that I can detect from my end is that somewhere along the line the initial SYN is getting dropped on the floor. The connection doesn't get any further than that. --JeevesMkII 18:10, 7 January 2009 (EST)

130.113.218.226 00:31, 8 January 2009 (EST)
- No, in fact I'd recommend it. You might well be able to do away with the modem too, if your internet comes via an RJ45 cable and is straight PPPoE. Anything you can do to get rid of small plasticy boxes between the server and the internet is good. Consumer grade equipment like that is not known for its reliability. Just a couple of things, firstly set up your firewall ruleset so that all ports not explicitly open are set to DROP (This probably includes the mysql port, which you can happily run on a local socket instead of an internet one), and use ipt_recent to ward off some of the less aggressive internet idiots. --JeevesMkII 00:57, 8 January 2009 (EST)
Sorry to keep bugging you but this is not really my area of expertise. I have gone through and setup DHCP and what not on the server and have my computer plugged into the server via cross over cable. I get an IP address and I can do somethings on the internet. For example, I can load RationalWiki fine (I assume thats because it is "behind the firewall) and my Skype loads fine. But websites won't load and IM programs won't load. I assume that means that the glitch is in my firewall rules right? If all that is working that means the basic setup is working right? tmtoulouse 18:23, 8 January 2009 (EST)

AliasMatch[edit]
I am using the apache2 http.conf file for the short urls I have this rule:
AliasMatch /wiki(.*) /home/rational/public_html/w/index.php$1
Which works fine except for urls like:
http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Conservapedia
I can't figure our how to do a negation in the AliasMatch, or to come up with an alternative rule that would allow both types of addresses to work.
Any thoughts?
tmtoulouse 15:58, 8 January 2009 (EST)
- Isn't it simply the case that you want your first mod_rewrite RewriteRule to be something like:
- RewriteRule ^/wiki(.*) /w$1
- Which will rewrite all urls of the form /wiki/foo to /w/foo, and then the rest of the rewrite rules you already have will munge it to point at the actual file? /w/index.php?title=Conservapedia seems to work, which indicates that ought to be the right answer. --JeevesMkII 16:18, 8 January 2009 (EST)

Three[edit]
Jeeves (or anyone else out there), I've just upgraded to Jaunty Jackalope & my three connection's gone down. After entering name & password abox appears:
The application 'nm-connection-editor' (/usr/bin/nm-connectioneditor) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked
Password: ______________________________
Hope that shows right, it doesn't on my pda. HALP and marmite 10:55, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- It's just trying to save the name and password into the keyring, if you click deny, it should still connect, but it won't save the password. Did you set a password for the keyring? It usually pops up the first time a program wants to store passwords, but you can choose not to use it then. -- Nx / talk 13:16, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- Pathetic ignorance: what's a keyring? and marmite 15:36, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- It's a software program that stores all your passwords encrypted, so you only have to remember one password. -- Nx/talk 15:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- Configuration should be in System->Preferences->Encryption and Keyrings, but I can't see anything relevant there. I don't use the keyring though. -- Nx/talk 15:47, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- Well, just keep hitting "enter" out of frustration & it works! Thanks for teh help (?), Nx. and marmite 12:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Bizarre reason for wigo format[edit]
The old one was like that too, if I'm reading the code right. The reason is that the function is executed once for every tag, and it can't determine whether it's the first or last such tag on the page. Section headers would also break stuff. -- Nx/talk 10:39, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Charles Minard[edit]
Thanks so much for re-introducing me to an old friend (the graphic) that I had lost contact with lo these many years since I saw it (probably in Sci Am in the 70's or 80's). Now I shall strive to never forget his name so I can always re-find via RW or WP. And on my hard drive. ħuman 00:10, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Cunt[edit]
No, I'm not offended by the word. (Does that make me big and clever?) Others may be though, I just thought it wasn't a good look, that's all. Matt 09:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- The only thing I can imagine that's worse than being offended for yourself is being offended on another's behalf. If there really are these prudes out there, wouldn't it be best to let them speak for them themselves? In any case, how is having c**t any better than simply saying cunt? If you see f**k printed, do you read that as f-asterisk-asterisk-k or simply fuck? I really hope the latter, and if you understand the word as fuck what the hell difference does it make if you camouflage it? It isn't the word that is offensive, it's the context. I can write nigger all day, and nobody could say I was a racist, but the minute I tell someone they're a fucking nigger that's when I become a racist and all round general arsehat. Incidentally, we have an article on cunts, should it be censored for the sake of your silent, moral majority? --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 09:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

You remind me of that idiot who called himself MarcusCicero who eventually just descended in to calling all and sundry idiots. - (Either WIGOCP or here pick your page) When I first joined RW, I was upset at some of the language, I even protested about an image (can't remember what now). Bill Shak had it "What's in a name ...?" For fuck's sake what's it matter how one refers to a body part? Would it be OK if the quote had used the word "vagina" or "muff" or "twat"? Would "prick" have caused the same reaction? You'd still have had to explain to the kids (other page, sorry) It's all a load of bollocks. Instead of worrying about words, let's worry about the attitudes that make words "bad"; let's worry about real things "Man's inhumanity to man". </rant> Jeeves FTW. and marmite 16:09, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Cunt funfact: "cunt" is derived from the same Middle English word as 'quaint', both originally meant 'pleasing thing'. You can see this subtle wordplay somewhere in the Canterbury Tales. Jorge 18:12, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- Speaking of asterisking things out, I've always thought it drew more attention to it, like you're aware that it's a "bad word" and you want people to know you're using a "bad word" rather than just a word to add some emphasis or alter the flow of the sentence. You hear someone go "fuck" on TV and it just seems to pass through unnoticed, but put a whopping great BLEEP over it and everyone turns around and hears it, even if it was mumbled and bearly audible on the original tape. Just a thought, anyway. narchist 18:47, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- I agree - Jon Stewart, if not bleeped, probably wouldn't swear on his show. But the bleep adds some hip cred to his savvy audience of nappie wetters. OH, and then there's that MPFC classic that listed kn*ckers twice... ħuman 23:03, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Twat[edit]
Unvandal bin me now Ed Poor. Twat. MC
- Um, no? --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 13:30, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Why not?
- Oh, pick one of your obsession with Susan or that all you do otherwise is go round calling people twats. You are a vandal. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 16:53, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
No, I call people who deserve to be called twats, twats. A vandal runs around and throws nonsense into articles and generally is a spammer. Giving some of you a reality check is not only a real pleasure for me, but necessary for this most 'rational' of websites. Take you for example 'JeevesMarkTwo', your original account was vacated in a pathetic little parting shot from yourself. When you left, you promised never to come back... yet you did! How sad and pathetic you really are that you get your little kicks in labelling people vandals on an internet website. Like Susan you kick up these periodic little tantrums, run off and promise never to come back. If only you'd keep to your promise.
Unblock me now, taking away my sysopry is fair enough, but labelling me a vandal is just dishonest. TWAT.
- No, you aren't getting un-vandal binned. If nothing else, it means I only have to listen to your whining every half an hour. If you feel hard done by, I suggest you take it to the admin abuse page. Maybe you can find someone else more sympathetic to your stalking and bitching. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 20:44, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Nice Man[edit]
Not 100% sure, and too at-work to check, but I believe your Peep Show quote is misattributed to Mark when it is in fact Jez who says that. You oughta change that, it's misleading. NICE MAN. --seventhrib 16:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Fairly sure I got it right, but I don't immediately have the ep handy to confirm that. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 20:43, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Peep show's brilliant. I love it when Mark's walking into his office after jilting Sophie and goes "Please help me Jesus! If you help me I'll believe in you! ... She's looking away! Thank you Jesus! Although it was 50/50, I might need a bit more proof than that..." SJ Debaser 19:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Re: this discussion[edit]
imagemagick is pretty dumb about converting images. It loads the entire buffer into memory; netpbm's pnmtopng tool seems to do on the fly instead of loading it all into RAM before proceeding. netpbm may also have a tool that concatenates images similarly efficiently, but I haven't checked that out. PNM files are ridiculously easy to concatenate with simple code, though. Fedhaji 04:34, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Rsync and gzip[edit]
Question, that I can not find a good answer too, do you know if the -rsyncable option on gzip keeps the diff increments that rsync needs to transfer to a remote server during synchronization close to uncompressed increments? tmtoulouse 22:31, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if I understand the question, but if you're asking if you gzip a whole bunch o' stuff that has previously been rsync'd whether you're going to get a ginourmous diff next time you rsync everything, the answer is yes even with the -rsyncable flag. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 13:07, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
