A quick question...[edit]
Can you say a few words about the provenance of your screen name? PowderSmokeAndLeather (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- I used to play in a forum game, several years ago, where we RPed as nations. Mine was called Octopolis, so usually I was just addressed as Octo. So, I started to go by that name elsewhere, too. The addition of the 8 is because "Octo" is not by itself a very clever name, so it is often already taken. I didn't try if it was here, I just went straight to Octo8. - Okay, cool, thanks. I was a little concerned because the number "88" (as in octo-8) has certain ... connotations among a ... certain cohort of nasty people. No worries, and, hey, welcome to the madhouse. PowderSmokeAndLeather (talk) 01:05, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, this was recently pointed out to me on another site as well. I suppose in that regard the name wasn't well chosen, but oh well. I'm not changing it just because of some Nazis :p Octo8 (talk) 01:38, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- Given the prevalence of Malcolm on your user page, I'm almost convinced you're okay. :-) PowderSmokeAndLeather (talk) 01:47, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Also...[edit]
In exchange for this, please de-red your username. It's a new rule I just made up. PowderSmokeAndLeather (talk) 01:07, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Hi-effort IP edit[edit]
That was the most effort by an IP I've ever seen. Most of them just add "You lie!" after the first paragraph. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:24, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
- Heh, I suppose. But the aim was obviously to revert the article's statement to the contrary. If the anon signs up and discusses his point on the talk page, maybe a compromise can be found. Octo8 (talk) 04:48, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Blocking[edit]
Hey, New Guy. A 3-day block is kind of heavy-handed, especially on an ip. Consider using the vandal bin, or, in the case of someone who's targeting a specific article or two, locking the article(s) in question for a few hours. We try to use the big blocks for serial vandals/people who pollute the place persistently with racist diatribes/real assholes. We're sort of resigned to having to clean up after run-of-the-mill a-holes in order to maintain a more open environment. PowderSmokeAndLeather (talk) 15:40, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
- I see. My rationale was that with drive-by vandals, chances are they won't even notice a single hour block. But if they still can't edit after three days, they might give up and go elsewhere. I mean, I do suppose most vandals are just casual, without great motivation. But I'll follow the usual practice from now on then. Even if 1h blocks seem to be symbolic at best ;) Octo8 (talk) 15:42, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
