Second Constitution[edit]

Of course the Essay:Second Constitution of the United States is mine now since I've initiated an initial draft, but hopefully not for much longer -- if my name is there (ie Essay by Thomas Wright Sulcer), then others may be reluctant to modify the essay. I want others to modify the essay to improve it, to see what happens, to have it become a community effort. Can any essay be modified by any other RationalWiki user? (Is this a policy?)--Thomas Wright Sulcer (talk) 03:52, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure. I just got here. But the edit history says only you wrote it, so that's what I went by. Revert if you please, but then there will be an implication that the document speaks for the community as a whole. Which it can't. You do know that a lot of us in the community aren't American and might not give a shit about your Constitution in the first place, right? PintOfStoutTalk Good people drink good beer. 03:54, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
We have done is before, but it might be more suited to a debate. - π Moderator 03:58, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
An essay can be modified by the community if the original author(s) give their express permission. I think a lot of people here, whether American or not, have an interest in the US constitution and would be interested in collaborating on a second version of it. In essay form, as opposed to a debate, this might produce a version of the constitution that reflects the community's preferences more than just debating what we want. Or something like that. Two hints[edit]

Before slashing near enough 50% of an article, bring it up on the talk page first. Secondly, less insulting edit comments please, it makes you look like a twat. Scarlet A.pngnarchist 01:39, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

So you undid ALL of my edits, instead of taking the time to deal with the ones that you have a problem with? That's equally unhelpful. PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 01:40, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
And that too can be undone simply. I'm just asking that you state what you're doing and don't leave dickish sounding comments in your wake. Scarlet A.pngd hominem 01:41, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Like I said, dickish edit comments make you look like a twat. I'm just saying to state on a discussion page before you hack away at the entire thing and removing most of it. Scarlet A.pngpathetic 01:48, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Intersection of religion and corporate culture[edit]

I don't know if this is quite what you're going for, but the astroturfing of "religious" organizations against environmental reform has become a more common tactic since the '90s. This pinko site has a good overview. There's more on the anti-environmentalism page, and this character in particular is noteworthy. Oh, and, on a semi-related note, there's always Ralph Reed. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 23:26, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm really interested in using religion as a way to market stuff and as a way to create corporate identities, especially in stuff that isn't expressly meant to be sold as Christian stuff, like sexy underoos. I'll definitely look at this and see what I can do with it. PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 00:57, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

De-CPing[edit]

If you want to take out all references to CP in the main space, then it might be a good idea to bring it up somewhere instead of unilaterally doing it. Thanks. Sam Tally-ho! 20:43, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

EC From what I understand, this is an issue that has been debated and pretty much resolved for quite some time now. Basically, CP is for CP space. PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 20:45, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Gradually de-CPing is fine with me and probably most of the community but doing unilaterally like that isn't the best approach. Some mention of CP in the mainspace might be relevant for examples of radical religious right stuff and what have you. Sam Tally-ho! 20:52, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

By "unilaterally" I mean he just removes big chunks of content without bothering to at least tell anyone. Pints of stout[edit]

Which stout is your favorite? The Symphony of Punk Can't sleep, clowns will eat me! 01:19, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Depends where I am -- In Ireland or in a couple of select pubs in NY where they actually know how to pour the stuff, Guinness. Murphys runs a close second. Otherwise I tend to go local--The chocolate stout here or this when I'm at "home" home, and this when I'm at "where I live" home....PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 01:32, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Mmmmmm those looks like some damn tasty beers. My person favorite beer is Guiness Extra Stout, but I like most any stout beer I've tried. The Symphony of Punk Can't sleep, clowns will eat me! 01:41, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Guinness Extra Stout is unfortunately locally brewed. The one you guys get is from Canada, which is apparently quite nice but not as good as the Irish. Here in Oz it is brewed by Fosters, it is unimpressive and not very nice. Guinness Draught taste like water. If I am out I like this and if I am home at home it will be a bottle of this. Unfortunate summer has rolled around and it will be too hot for stouts for another 6 months. - π Moderator 01:57, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

I believe the terms are interchangeable, but you might want to ask someone from the peanut gallery to confirm. I grew up with 8-track tapes and a dial phone, myself. PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 23:05, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
There's the greatest Utube of some french canadian 7 year olds being shown things like 8 track players (the plunger kind), and dial telephones, and simple record players. It's sad/a riot depending on your mood. It's subbed, I"ll see if I can find it. Wiki says they are interchangable, by the way, so for old farts like me, i interchanged them on our article. Proving Too Much[edit]

Dude, I'm not claiming that "The only thing we can know for certain is that nothing else can be known for certain" is true. I am just fixing the fallacy of "Nothing can be known for certain." I think mine is closer to the original intent than yours. Think about it: You usually say "Nothing can be known for certain" as a retort when somebody claims certain knowledge on some subject. You would rarely retort with "There are some things we may never know for certain." :-) --Bertrc (talk) 02:21, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I would counter with EXACTLY that. Your "fixing it" doesn't fix it. As I read the article, the point shouldn't be to honour the original intent of the fallacious statement, but to replace those fallacious statements with reasonable, logical and correct ones. PintOfStout Talk Good people drink good beer. 02:24, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Oooo, claiming to know what is "more reasonable" and "more correct" is dangerous waters :-) Actually I agree that yours is more reasonable and correct. However, I don't think making a statement more reasonable is the point of the article. I really believe we should fix the logical fallacy while staying as close to the original intent as possible. I'm certainly open to the possibility that my version is not closer to the original intent (but I am even more open to including snarky comments that point out how unreasonable the entire statement is in the first place. :-) ) --Bertrc (talk) 03:07, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
"This is the only statement I can know for certain". But to know that statement for certain, I must know with equal certainty many other facts that statement depends on for its justification, e.g. "I exist", "Things exist", "Thinking beings exist", "Thought is possible", "Language exists", "I possess the faculty of language", etc. So, if I know that statement for certain, I must know many other statements for certain. Hence your claim is self-refuting and therefore false. (((Zack Martin))) 02:32, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
