- The square brackets you've used are okay, but ~~~~ takes less time and adds the date and time you posed the comment. (There is a one-click signature button in the row of buttons that appears when you edit a page; it's the second one from the right. The date and time tells people where your comment figures in the flow of conversation.) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 20:39, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Not sleeping, Quitting Smoking.[edit]
Hey, I saw your post on the Saloon Bar, but didn't really follow all the replies. Thought I'd put some thoughts here. I've had some pretty bad insomnia problems in the past, and have tried (and failed) to quit smoking, so my advice on the sleep is probably much better than the smoking...
- A doctor once told me, and it's a really good way of thinking of it, to think about needing to be mentally tired AND physically tired. Know how sometimes you feel physically drained, but mentally active.. or mentally drained but somehow energetic.. and it's always difficult to sleep with either. Try to work out which one it is. If it's physical, try to wear yourself out a bit more, walk instead of a bus, that kind of thing. If it's more mental, the below tips can really help:
- I know it's hard for the computery nerdy types (which I am, and you may be), but when I'm struggling to sleep, it REALLY does help if you say, "Right, I'm going to bed in 1 or 2 hours, no more computer." Try not to use the computer, watch TV, that kind of thing. Read a book, try to wind down. I find it impossible to just go from, "Lalala, socialising, messing about on the computer, cooking... BED." I need that wind down time.
- If you find yourself lying in bed thinking everything through, it sounds silly... but try writing it down. Just have a little notebook or piece of paper with a pen by your bed, write down any worries, ideas, thoughts which're going through your head. It can give an odd sense of closure, and after a month you might have a collection of great ideas.
- Unless it gets absolutely life-ruining and depressing, try to avoid the medication. For some people, benzodiazepines (sp?) (Valium, lorazipam, that kind of thing) and sleeping pills (zopiclone, etc.) can be really helpful. And one or two nights using them can be BRILLIANT to just catch up on some essential sleep. But they're... not exactly addictive.. but I found that if you use them to sleep for like a week or two, then it is EVEN HARDER than before to sleep once you're off them. Try not to make the problem worse long-term to make it better short-term. Obviously I'm no doctor, and this is just my experience... but don't just willy nilly accept yummy drugs from the doctor.
- Cut the caffeine, completely. Every last bit of it. I found this REALLY difficult, because when you can hardly sleep.. that cup of coffee is the only thing that keeps you going. But if you can not use it for a week, it makes a huge difference.
- As the the smoking, try the plastic inhilators, the patches and the gum. They work differently for different people. I found the patches bad, even as a 20-a-day-smoker, they're still a bit heavy-going and make me headachey and dizzy from all the nicotine, and having it constantly pumped into you. The gum is good because you can use it subtly anywhere, and it REALLY takes the craving away, leaving only the mental element of it. The inhilators, "e-cigarettes," aren't something I've tried, but a friend of mine managed to quit with them, saying they really solved the craving because you go through the actions of smoking. I also know a lot more people who have quit by STOPPING smoking and trying to stick with it, than saying, "I'll cut down then stop..." Good luck with it, and I hope you can achieve it. - As far as I know, there are no gay clubs in waterloo. There used to be the man bar catering to the more sleazy client (men only, strict dress code of at the most, pants only), but closed now I think. There a couple of saunas there, and Vauxhall is just down the road, which seems to have surpassed Old Compton street for London's gay centre. - I still need to check out Heaven, my friends (gay and straight) in common with all human beings keep saying we should go there and continuously fail to organise anything. I'd need to go with a mixed group though to affirm my heterosexuality, devilishly handsome as I am.
- Also AMG, I was passing through Waterloo station the other day and thought to myself "hey, AMassiveGay lives here!" Exciting I know. SJ Debaser 16:31, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

I looked up the references used, and a return to modesty is a goddamn travesty of a source. Any idea how it got used in the first place? ikanreed You probably didn't deserve that 18:50, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- i honestly didnt look at the source. The point being made had no business being in an article about prostitution. The whole article needs revamping and refocus - to much arse about happy hookers and empowerment or that decriminalisation is something wonderous instead the best we can do with an awful thing. Im not keen on the fantasy worlds some folk seem to live in I can only sort it piecemeal while internet connection or my tablet is too twitchy. AMassiveGay (talk) 18:57, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Farewell to arms, as the cripple put it[edit]
Hello AMassiveGay! I just wanted to tell you that, while I can't always process all the text fast enough and so on (as I have ADHD and also use some medication that doesn't always work "in the right direction" for that particular disability), I'm slowly taking the time to hear you out on the points you make, and I just wanted to say that I respect your devotion to this topic. You put it in the following way on Hamabost's talkpage: "I apologise if i am abrasive, but this is a hit button issue for me.". And I respect that from you. I would like you to know that I also care deeply about this topic, and I think we both have good intentions towards human beings not being treated like cattle and the emotional downsides to prostitution. There's very much to be said about a lot of negative truths to it all, and so fourth. And besides adding those sourced quotes from the pro-grassroot rights psychology professor, which are intended to help humanize sex workers in the eyes of those that would dehumanize them, I haven't even written on my views on the topic yet (which is why I stress we must let things take time and not fall into an edit war). But anyways, I don't plan to make my views heard here. And you don't have to agree with what those quotes mean - they're not sent from God himself. But I just wanted to tell you that I respect your devotion and I don't mean to manhandle this delicate subject. And maybe you could hear me out on my views, too, as they are no less sincere. I know I mean well for these people and for the site. I don't doubt you do, either. And somewhere inbetween our viewpoints, I'm sure we could find agreement, as I already believe we agree in the humanitarian "spirit and intention". All the best, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 13:00, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
- For example, I would very much support finding one (or several) "darker" quotes (if you misunderstand me correctly) for the "The bad side" segment of the article; that would really help to communicate how this isn't a slap on the wrist issue you just handwave and go (In a Jerry Seinfeld voice) "So whaat? People are flipping burgers, same thiing!". I think that's an important issue, too. I wouldn't even have used the "coal miner" quote if it wasn't because the dear professor clarified immediately that, as he puts it "Those saying "but it's different" are right.", and that it's about not stigmatizing and rejecting basic worker rights from any people, especially the vulnerable. And so on. Prostitution isn't (always... or even, often) a happy laugh, and we very much need to convey "that side" of it too. Just as we need to convey the defense of sex workers against those who would deride and spit and dehumanize. And so on - don't get caught up on any specifics here... I'm just trying to show that I'm making myself avaliable for the discussion, which I hope and think will be fruitful, and which is important to me and you alike. And I'm trying to embrace nuance here. Just saying buddy. All the best, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 13:10, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe for the "Views on prostitition", we could find a relevant quote for each "school of thought"? To further highlight the plethora of views (nuanced or not)? Reverend Black Percy (talk) 13:14, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
I believe you[edit]
when you say you are very concerned about the dehumanisation of those we disagree with. I must say I concur fully. While I do not share your exact views on the issue of Phyllis' passing, I don't think you reason the way you do due to any ill-will or malignant intent. I hope you believe me when I tell you I don't write out of malice, either.
Just because it spoke to me when you underscored the part about the danger inherent to dehumanisation, and just because I believe you when you say that that is truly a worry of yours... What is your take on these posts directed at me? Do you think those replies to what I specifically wrote helps the cause of fighting dehumanisation? Especially keeping in mind how, even here, I took the high road. All the best, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 15:38, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments on the relevant Talk pages. It is reassuring to see at least some people here are willing to promote the ethos of 'constructive dialogue'. I don't expect people to always agree with me, not even when I take the time to explain on the Talk page, but if people are unwilling or unable to use the Talk page to state why they think an edit is invalid, I think it makes sense to me that it should be allowed to stand. An 'Edit warring' ban should be imposed on the party who edits or reverts while refusing to use the Talk page, rather than someone who is dutifully explaining everything as per the guidelines. Anyway, respect to you for sticking your head above the parapet - I hope you're more representative of the RationalWiki users than the SysOp bullies. Star Gazer (talk) 20:14, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

My object is not to prove that you are wrong[edit]
"Around the year 2030 we will be in a position where we set off an irreversible chain reaction that will most likely lead to the end to our civilization as we know it." --Greta Thunberg.
- As far as I understand, there is no consensus that this is a true statement. It just may turn out to have been true. There is no question in my mind that it is an alarmist dramatization. Why do I comment upon it? What is my underlying motive? You have a hard-on for UL, who can be a jerk, I guess, but in this case they just posted a link. You and the usual suspects just supplied all of the bad motives. We know bad shit is going to happen because of climate change. We just don't know how bad. It is my position that it doesn't help, and may actually hurt to pretend that we do know.Ariel31459 (talk) 22:43, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
- the exact science doesnt matter to me. it doesnt matter to most people. i/most people are not scientists and cannot weigh up the evidence. its trust. faith even. enough of the right people saying something, i have little choice but to take their word for it. i'm not quite so dense as to say 'conservative bad, liberal good' but a lot of folk will. there is the problem. its a recipe for inaction and inertia. it seems that most people think climate change is a thing, and is not good, but it hasnt translated to action. why is that? its not the science its doubt. its the drip drip drip of misinformation amidst the ever more dire warnings. MASSIVE FLOODING, DROUGHTS, they lying, FAMINE, CROP FAILURE, scaremongering, DISEASE, SOCIAL UNREST, they just want more tax. the calamity is far off and you got bills to pay and your man in the whitehouse isnt worried, so probably nothing. you do need two cars.
- no one expected precision from a school girl. it was not what we was looking for. we were looking to moved by her passion. galvanised. spurred to do something. everything i read concerning the above statement suggests there is a concensus for that time line. its a actually pretty vague statement. its disingenuous to be the focus of criticism. its another whispering voice in the back of the head telling us we should do nothing and its a wilful misinterpretation of a plea for action as a scientific deposition thats stops us from discussimg what should be done, what can be done?
- i said in the saloon bar we know all we need to know and you say here 'we know bad shit is going to happen because of climate change' - there. thats all we need to know. what do we do about it? AMassiveGay (talk) 00:13, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Maybe I don't[edit]
But I still don't like the way it's written. Kinda gives me the impression that RW is recommending people to focus less on their weight, not only showing what people who are into HAES believe, especially considering how the article is written. I thought about rewriting it like this: "HAES advocates to focus less on weight and more on healthy habits. It should be noticed however than weight is still an important part of health.". What do you think? GeeJayK (talk) 02:58, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for removing most of the garbage on the Bengal Famine article[edit]
I edited the article a bit, but I didn't have the guts to remove all that gibberish. The article still needs work, but is indeed better now. I believe that most people claiming there was a genocide perpetrated by Churchill there are either Hindutvas, nazis or tankies, which is never a good sign of a credibility of a theory. The Wikipedia article, albeit critical of the British Raj, doesn't even mention this fringe theory, despite some regular whine by these three groups on the talk page. GeeJayK (talk) 01:02, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- The problem lies in we go all in on Churchill as defo the one to blame, and not much else. The evidence in support is misleading, false, and missing entirely. There is only so much false and irrelevant bullshit I can remove before the page is blank. Churchill's own page is similarly nonsense. Reminds me I've the Karl Marx article to rewrite. Honestly it's easier to let slide the embarrassingly poor quality of some articles with all the Hassle. I'm no expert on anything really. I can't easily replace or rewrite obvious dogshit that makes up some articles so I just ignore. But the articles still obvious dogshit

Mosley[edit]
Before the war our father was one of Mosley's 'boys'. He was interned on the IOM for the duration (almost). He never talked about it and I only found out after his death in 2001. Scream!! (talk) 15:31, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
- was the question 'what did you do in the war?' never asked? i cant imagine it not coming up with my dad if were around during the war. he cant help but talk about himself. he'd make stuff up (he frequently does/did) if he had nothing. hes was born just after it ended and talks fondly playing on german building sites in dusseldorf, where me grandad was posted during the occupation. my nan couldnt stop talking about her wartime experiences in london with the waf - seemed to be mainly scamming cigarettes of americans and sneaking into cinemas without paying. got the impression it was the best time of her life. stories after that period involve knocking me grandad out cold with a frying pan, or the time she flung a knife at him and stuck in his arm. tales of a wife beating alcoholic granddad were probably not ideal to regale the grandkids with while paying newmarket. if you its such an important question for you, you would have seen its been answered on this page already. this is just lazy. troll harderAMassiveGay (talk) 22:00, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
I must be blind since I don’t see it. Someone asked and I didn’t see an answer so it intrigued me. — Unsigned, by: 2603:6010:7601:7d57:9144:2a75:76ac:4b14 / talk / contribs
Regarding the Che article[edit]
Per what you said a few weeks ago, the article on Che Guevara is negative to an unfair degree and lacking quite a bit of nuance, plus claiming that Che was racist and homophobic (in the categories, it's actually not mentioned in the body of the article itself), which, in his early years he most definitely was, but from when he proclaimed himself to be a changed man in 1951 after the motorcycle expedition up until his death there is no evidence that he still carried homophobic and racist beliefs. In fact, there's evidence to suggest that he became very much anti-racist (see: his August 8, 1961 speech at Punta del Este, and his December 12, 1964 speech at the UN).
I've attempted to rewrite the article myself in the past twice but since I'm very busy with life (as well as being prone to slacking and procrastinating when I actually have spare time...) I'll give two good sources to help you out if you ever want to rewrite it yourself:
- Che: A Revolutionary Life - by Jon Lee Anderson
- Ernesto Guevara: Tambíen Conocido como El Che - by Paco Ignacio Taibo II

About asexual people[edit]
The concept is mainly around lack of interest in sex but I do believe a big portion of them are sex averse and some do find the act pretty gross. They usually don't talk about STIs though, it's more of just the act being comparable to the body parts involved (nothing to do with "gender" either) with are usually end of digestive track stuff. Also asexuals usually don't say they're crazy and have zero love, that's something usually a bigot would say. Imagine if not being bi or pan gets those that are saying you are incapable of love. That would be nonsensical. --It's-a me, LeftyGreenMario! 15:06, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- yeh i figured anything as strong as revulsion and disgust requires more than a passing interest to provoke such strong feeling. a lack of interest doesnt provoke anything, but if pressed ive no doubt its all a bit icky for folk not otherwise interested. sex does get quite sticky at the best of times viewed from afar it can seem pretty gross. you got to buy into the conflicting ideas and feeling it inspires to let your hormones lead you to a payoff thats special/disgusting/horrific/beautiful/romantic/sinful - all things to all people - but boils down putting bits we usually want hidden inside of the bits someone else would rather hideaway that will a huge mistake if it does what nature intended and puts a bun in the oven. the peak of heavan or hell if you want it. slapping slimey meat together. im actually all for a gross sticky mess and raw meat getting mashed as a positive analogy for sex and be the romantic ideal, but im filthy rutting beast. different strokes
- its kind of a trope in movies and book where religious maniac is obsessed with filthy whores and harlots and wants the burn in hell because they cant handle their sexual desires. though im not sure we can use tv tropes to delicately and accurate describe anyones sexual proclivities in the real world. Starmer exposing Johnson’s true nature is beautiful to watch. Johnson is a pathetic narcissist and charlatan—lying and deceit are his lifeblood; an enemy of truth and decency. He deserves contempt and contempt Starmer gave him. LeucippusSalva veritate 21:40, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- This kind of political theatre is poison. Virtually nothing is gained from it. One is less intelligent after spectating it. Watching question periods in most (though not all) Northern European countries is an experience in seeing how boring and non-sensational political discourse should be. It honestly doesn't have to be this way. ShabiDOO 22:07, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- I share your repugnance at the House of Commons’ norms of discourse (having a wank Speaker doesn’t help much either); both sides are guilty of this “Bear-pit” culture (the Conservatives, by my reckoning, being more guilty though). Even so—Sir Kier Starmer is still more than capable of dismantling Johnson’s usual rigmarole, and in this video, in quite masterful fashion! LeucippusSalva veritate 22:38, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Would you agree?[edit]
“It is the most shattering experience of a young man's life when he awakes one morning and quite reasonably says to himself...I will never...play the Dane...when that moment arises, one's ambition ceases...” LeucippusSalva veritate 17:57, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- its not something that keeps me up at night and i doubt the opportunity to play hamlet is on the cards anytime soon. AMassiveGay (talk) 19:21, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- Then your ambition has not ceased! As I’m sure you’ve realised the utterance is from Withnail And I, and so is the following: “Oh, my boys, my boys, we're at the end of an age. We live in a land of weather forecasts and breakfasts that set in. Shat on by Tories, shovelled up by Labour. And here we are, we three, perhaps the last island of beauty in the world.” LeucippusSalva veritate 22:23, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Eviolite[edit]
It's funny Ken can't stay away from this place and keeps popping in on a new near weekly basis. The mastermind behind the "essay" accusing us of being obsessed with CP now has to come here because he gets little to no attention. I wonder how the Question Evolution! campaign went for him? Was atheism destroyed on the internet regarding atheism on the internet? Did his Project 200 smash evolution into a fine pulp? The mystery deepens! Acei9 03:10, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
