New business[edit]

Oddly enough, I don't actually have any new business. Don't get me wrong, I've always got something to say about anything. I just don't think that I've got the strength today. --Edgerunner76 14:34, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

January 20th, 2009[edit]

I've been giving this a great deal of thought lately. I, obviously, want to see a Democrat take the oath of office that day. But, I find myself looking forward (staying with the Democratic assumption) to the inaugural speech. I've never bothered before and only know the historical biggies (Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy). I, again obviously, find myself very excited with anticipation as to what will be said. On the other hand, things never work out as I am about to describe. Politics is replete with fake respect and platitudes.
I want to hear all about the restoration of the Constitution and civil liberties. I want to hear about the end of greed, torture, and corruption. I won't hear these things, tt least not the way I want to hear them said. Still, I find myself waiting for that day to arrive. --Edgerunner76 12:16, 12 October 2007 (EDT)

All things are fleeting[edit]

I heard that from the movie Patton. wp:George C. Scott/Patton mentions how when a conquering Roman general would be parading through the streets he would be followed by a slave who constantly whispers in his ear that "all glory is fleeting". I simply expanded it.
Now it might sound like a downer, but I take comfort in it. When I think to myself that "all things are fleeting" I know that the good times might not last forever, but neither will the bad.
It's quite literally true too. All things are fleeting. I credit this saying as one of my groundings in rationality. --Edgerunner76 12:16, 12 October 2007 (EDT)

That reminds me of a (rather long) story that my Chinese professors taught me. Which I think I'm going to put on my user page, rather than clutter your talk with. Researcher 14:57, 7 December 2007 (EST)

A little personal story[edit]

My father is both a born-again Christian and mentally ill (medically). Richard Dawkins (and I) would say that he is mentally ill twice over. The curious thing is the perspective that this has left me with since childhood. When these things were explained to me as a child, I understood them as a child. I connected the two things in a way that even Dawkins possibly hasn't. To me they were one-and-the-same.

To me, a born-again Christian was someone who was crazy and taking all of the medication that my father was taking. I saw them as CRAZY, mentally ill, whatever. The bond between the two in my mind was irreversible. I just sort of figured that there were an incredible number of mentally ill people in the world. Actually, I still believe that. I just realize that they aren't mentally ill in the same way my father is.

What I'm trying to get across is how fundamental this has become to me. They are inseparable. My kneejerk reaction to someone being (self- or otherwise)labeled a born-again Christian is to see a medically mentally ill person. --Edgerunner76 13:24, 10 December 2007 (EST)

Demotion[edit]

I just demoted you to sysop. I think we have found that a 1 hour block deters most vandals. Recurrences might need several hours or a day. We try to keep them short in general. You might want to practice on an innocent editor to see how the screens look. I believe you also now will have the ability to delete ("vaporize") unnecessary pages (mispelled titles, unneeded redirects, etc.). Congratulations! humanUser talk:Human 15:25, 12 December 2007 (EST)

Then I saw that I had apparently also blocked "#1556" which I thought might be you, so I unblocked that as well. Xelinal[edit]

You're right - I was pissed at her/him and shouldn't have done that - but still, it's better than:

  1. 13:14, 15 January 2008 Edgerunner76 (Talk | contribs | block) blocked "My password is quack (contribs)" with an expiry time of 314159265358979323846 years (autoblock disabled) (Why not? ('til the stars burn out)) (unblock)

right? PFoster 13:02, 23 January 2008 (EST)

I think a case can be made that Xelinal might come back. It might just lead to more blocks, but they might. The "My password is" people are never going to come back as anything other than a new "My password is _____". Besides, many people here often take them up on the revelation of there password and change it. Therefore, the account is pretty useless one way or another. So, my block makes little difference. --Edgerunner76 13:58, 23 January 2008 (EST)

If it's just to store it in case WP deletes it, is it possible to nowiki the entire page? It's nothing in particular. I would guess the best way to describe it is as an experiment to see if anything comes of it. Just a random sampling of users I found interesting, but were long gone. Maybe someone will get an email saying that their RW talk page has changed and come back. Or, just make someone like yourself curious about a user that you had long forgotten or never knew was here. I also thought it might be funny if a long conversation sprung up on a talk page of a user that is long gone and might never see it. --Edgerunner76Your views are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter 16:33, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
