2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.
We are 100% user-supported! Help and donate $5, $10, $20 or whatever you can today with PayPal Logo.png!

Karma[edit]

Karma is religion sneaking its way into secular society. It doesn't exist. If I'm nice to a random stranger on the sidewalk, that doesn't mean I'm going to get some kind of reward from the universe. Conversely, if I call a random lady ugly or a random guy "minidick" the universe isn't going to punish me for it. Now, if I push an old lady down the steps, the police will have something to say about that, and if I ass kiss my boss enough I might get a reward, but that has nothing to do with karma. Karma needs to be rejected like all other religious dogma. ExtremeAtheist (talk) 18:04, 11 January 2025 (UTC)

I mostly reverted your first edit because I believe it's more descriptive for the article to describe karma as a "notion of cause and effect" than to simply describe it as a "religious fairy tale", since the former actually explains the concept better. Although, it was Carthage who reverted your second edit on the page (the one where it was changed to "religious belief" instead), so maybe you could also ask her for her opinion if she isn't busy. — LunaAHHHHH 18:14, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
"Religious belief" is just as flawed as "religious fairy tale" in describing the actual belief in question. I think our readers are smart enough to know that karma is a religious concept. Carthage (talk) 18:19, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
The reason I think it's important to specify it as religious in the lede is because it's amazing how many non-religious people or people who follow different religions to just recite things like "karma is going to get you." You might as well just say "you're going to go to hell for that." All religion is dangerous, not just the Abrahamic ones. Maybe the average RationalWikian would recognize it as religious, but what about the average person finding this from Google? ExtremeAtheist (talk) 18:22, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
Maybe "religious notion of cause and effect" might be a better middle-ground? — LunaAHHHHH 18:27, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
Thing is, it's more than that. When someone says "karma is a bitch," they're not saying "I'm going to beat the shit out of you for what you did" or even "I'm going to report you to the police for that," they're relying on some magic fairy godmother in nature to do that for them. That's not really cause and effect. I think the way I put it now, "a notion a cause and effect with a religious twist," is good. Do you object in some way? ExtremeAtheist (talk) 18:30, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
Well, that's why it's a "religious notion", although I don't think I have objections to the "with a religious twist" bit. I'm fine with whatever proposal that includes the "notion of cause and effect" thing. — LunaAHHHHH 18:34, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
I think we've come to agreement. What really irks me about karma is when it serves as a placeholder for "thoughts and prayers" which is all too common. "Mommy, what are you doing to stop the guy that raped me?" "Don't worry my 10 year old princess, karma will get that bad man" as that bad man proceeds to rape 15 more little girls because mommy put her faith in that stupid religious bullshit instead of pushing the police to do something. And that's why I don't like to sugar coat it as something that might be taken as having even a small amount of scientific merit. ExtremeAtheist (talk) 18:37, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
