Image copy-right[edit]

Hi Nx. I have been thinking about doing this for a while and recent discussions have prompted me to consider doing it this weekend. I was going to go through and cat all the images that don't have a licence tag, probably by the month they were uploaded. I was especially going to single out those claiming fair-use and not using the fair-use template. I suspect of the 9000, file over 3000 would be CP screenshots. I was wondering if you wanted to put a special CP screenshot licence notice on them all first and save the the trouble of having to check all of those. I am not sure of the copy-right statis of those, but Andy says we can use CP for anything so.. - π 12:07, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, I think fair use would cover it (since we're commenting on it), but CP's license also allows this (their fault for not wording it clearly). I'll create a placeholder template and run my bot on it (I've been considering doing this for a while, but didn't bother). We can fix the placeholder template later. -- Nx / talk 12:10, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. - π 12:12, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Bot is running, hopefully it will work on the subcats as well. I'm going away for a bit now, but it will take a while for the bot to finish its work anyway. -- Nx / talk 12:23, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Wow, I think it's done. -- Nx / talk 03:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
By my guesstimation that took about 15 hours, well done. When I come to write my bot I'll take the huge time into account and find a way of breaking it down into parts. - π 04:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, it was doing 1 page every 10 seconds (default pywb setting). Back when I recategorized the CP screenshots I ran multiple simultaneous instances with the limits disabled. -- Nx / talk 04:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking of doing them in chunks. I'll check the API and see if I can query for images uploaded by the month. - π 04:11, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
There's an option in add_text.py:
-untagged Add text in the images that don't have any license template
Don't know what exactly it checks for. -- Nx / talk 04:13, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm, I probably do it in PERL any way, as I am more familiar with it. I can query by size easy enough. You wouldn't happen to know any stats on the size of pictures so I can pick a bin ranges? - π 04:15, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
2.9 gigs if dd -ch is to be believed. -- Nx / talk 04:19, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
9,600 picture makes them on average about 300 kB each. I would assume the are Pareto distributed, hmmm. - π 04:39, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I can query for the time stamp, so I will still cat by that; maybe I'll go through the lists by size though. - π 04:17, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
5,559? - π 04:03, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Apparently. I don't know if it got them all. -- Nx / talk 04:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

monobook[edit]

your recent actions are verging on vandalism. If pimping your shit requires editing my monobook css to hide your crappy work from me, you really need to slow down and discuss your "project" with others - at, say, the saloon bar? ħumanUser talk:Human 04:36, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Quitting[edit]

I assume there are emails flying around because from what I can see, the spat wasn't particularly extensive. Anyway, you have plenty of support for your actions and you really shouldn't feel bullied out by one user, who, frankly, I think is kicking up a fuss just for the sake of kicking up a fuss. I concur. Educated bastard Phantom Hoover! 13:08, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm inclined to concur as well. The thing is, whether or not people in this community realize it or not, you are a valuable part of this community. It is my observation that most of what you do here is great for this site, but goes unnoticed and, therefore, under-appreciated. But I know, for a fact, that if you permaleft, this community as a whole would feel the effects. Lord Goonie Hooray! I'm helping! 22:38, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
Apparently Nx is having a bigger pissy fit than I am. And a well-deserved one, that that, considering what a dictator of the wiki he has been recently. ħumanUser talk:Human 06:23, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

i go away for two days and Nx leaves! Fuck! Nx, you aint going nowhere. Ace needs you. AceMcWicked 06:26, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
I've not really been around too much to follow this and I'm not aware of the details - but Nx has fantastic technical skills and, in my experience, is an exceptionally friendly and helpful individual. His departure from this wiki would be a major loss and I hope that it does not take place.--BobNot Jim 09:59, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
I've also missed a fair bit of the drama. Hope this gets sorted out anyway, and you're back, NX. I appreciate the stuff you've been doing around this here wiki. --ConcernedresidentAsk me about your mother 20:18, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

THANK GOD — Sincerely, Neveruse513 / Talk / Block 17:45, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
My apologies to everyone who found my outburst ugly, and everyone else, as well. I may have my "issues" with the drama that led to this, but I did not express myself well, so screw it. But mostly, my apologies to Nx, who I swore at up and down, as opposed to using decent English. Once again, I apologize for being a dick to a respected user, who was only trying to make the site better. More details: I suspect that many "behind the scenes" conversations were occurring, that is, the site owner, Trent, saying "do it". I think my personal frustration may have arisen due to not being "in the loop" on this one. So it goes. The general response to what Nx built is obvious confirmation that the mob liked it, and I am sorry for making it more tiresome to implement. ħumanUser talk:Human 01:56, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

That's unfortunate, but ignoring the warning is no excuse. If you post logged out, you posting your IP with your own permission. MarcusCicero[edit]

He has come out and said he was a troll. He has abused his sysop powers. He has disrupted this site time and time again. He has explicitly stated that his goal was to disrupt the site. From his Parthian Shot

even though I was the most transparent 'concern troll' in history.

Why not just take the logical step and ban him? He's now easily surpassed Fall Down as the second greatest troll in RW history, and is approaching TK territory with extreme prejudice. Now that he's dropped his cover, and can no longer plead innocent, there's no reason to let him remain here at all. The vandal bin is for spammers, where one click can kill their edits. MC can cause as much disruption as a thousand spammers let run unchecked for a day with just one post. Ban him now. It's the only reasonable course of action. This naiveté, that he's innocent and misrepresented, and has been abused, needs to stop, now. You're smarter than to buy his story hook, line, and sinker. --The Emperor Kneel before Zod! 01:34, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

"Blocking is generally only used on known vandals. Sysops should limit most blocks to an hour or two. Blocks longer than this should be discussed first before implementing."
"An editor's user page, and other pages in their user space, is their personal space and they are free to do with it what they want." I would argue that the decision whether to archive posts on a user talk page is also the right of the user, even though the talk page is not their property.
Do you think things will be better if you block him? No, you will regret it, like the last time you tried this. Why don't you just drop it already, he's gone, but if you keep poking him with a stick he'll come back to harass you. -- Nx / talk 01:47, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
1. He's not gone- not by a long shot. Just because he's not editing now doesn't mean he won't be back in a day, or week, or month, or even year, offering up some flimsy excuse than many sysops and bureaucrats will undoubtedly buy into. If he is to stay away, it is well known that only a block will manage that. The vandal bin is simply not enough.
2. The userpage edit was so that a unsuspecting sysop that had been absent for a while wouldn't come back and say, "oh, where's MC gone to", check his userpage, see no notice of leaving, note his ban, and unblock him with no idea of what had transpired. This will ensure that every user here knows what he posted, and who he is.
3. Yes. Yes, I do think that things will be better.
4. I didn't regret it. It touched off a chain of events that eventually led to him outing himself.
5. He's not gone, so long as he can edit he can still be considered to be "here"
6. So I'll revert him and either protect my page or ban him.
7. Why is it that anytime someone tries to discuss MC's behavior and the consequences that should be levied upon, up to and including banning, his precious few supporters can manage to silence the discussion with a simple "DFTT"? It accomplishes nothing, absolutely nothing. In order to work out a rational, effective, long term solution, we need to sit down and address this issue, not skirt around it and put it off until later. Let's face it, this needs to be delt with in a permanent manner, and sooner rather than later. Deference only hurts us. --The Emperor Kneel before Zod! 01:58, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
IIRC when we last discussed MC's behaviour, the discussion was not silenced with a simple DFTT. The mob chose not to implement such a policy. In fact after that most people seemed to either ignore MC or just troll him back. Now you decide to jump in and have your petty revenge against him, block him, then dance on his grave a little. Funny you mention TK, because that behavior reminds me of him more than MC's does. -- Nx / talk 02:36, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
