I am adding this section without clicking the "add section" tab[edit]

I would like to say that I have changed my mind, and have decided that being a dick to users who are new here is both uncalled for and not funny. So don't do it, it does not make you appear clever or witty in any way. Also, I hope this does not edit conflict you, because incoveniencing you is the last thing I want to do.--The Emperor Kneel before Zod! 02:51, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Spammers[edit]

Actually, I think it is an unwritten rule that you can block them for a time to disrupt them. I've often blocked them for 3 months at a time, and they never return. The Goonie 1 What's this button do? Uh oh.... 03:31, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Too bad it contradicts the written rules... -- Nx / talk 03:35, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but find me someone who will complain. In all honesty, I've been meaning for a while to start a discussion about amending that in the case of spambots. Otherwise, we could also always rename them to disrupt them. Punky Your mental puke relief 03:39, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
(E fucking C I will block YOU again!) A day or two is plenty I think. Reminds me, have I cleared the blocklist recently? ħumanUser talk:Human 03:40, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Note the spammer's edit pattern. A day or two won't affect them. Frankly I don't know why we shouldn't just permablock (with the talkpage left open for them), but I don't want a HCM. -- Nx / talk 03:44, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
I've often thought that myself, and the conclusion I came up with is, as I've seen before, all that is required is a block to disrupt the program. Thus, we keep our "we don't permablock" stance, and get rid of the bot. IMO, it's a far easier sell to the community that doesn't permablock. The Spikey Punk I'm punking my punk! 03:47, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
This one looks more like a person. And again, look at their edit pattern so far. -- Nx / talk 03:50, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, if Goonie says blocking for up to three months works, then I'm willing to take his word for it. I see no reason we don't amend the rules to allow blocking spambots for longer times. I'm willing to push for the change if either of you are. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 00:14, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Change is an evil thing. It usually leads to HCM, tears, leaving and never coming back and hurt feeling all round. -- Nx / talk 00:26, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Yet we persevere. Nothing will ever improve if we allow ourselves to be held hostage by traditionalists.
There have been at least four major incidents where we tried to change things and "HCM, tears, leaving and never coming back and hurt feeling all round" resulted; the forces of progress won two times, and that ain't a bad rate! Vote thing[edit]

Hey Nx. That vote thing is absurdly easy to use. I thought it was going to require something complicated like "thought" or "effort" but it needs neither. It's great. --BobSpring is sprung! 15:55, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

It's too easy, I'll have to invent a more complicated syntax, preferable something that involves special character that you can't even type with your keyboard -- Nx / talk 16:14, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Whenever Nx fiddles with something, I usually take a look and try to understand it because learning is fun. However, when I saw the DPL syntax, its ridiculousness was immediately apparent and no further effort was necessitated. — Sincerely, Neveruse / Talk / Block 17:19, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nx,

I'm not trying to harass anyone. I just noticed that my question had been removed from TK's talk page. I actually thought I did it myself when I left his talk page, so I placed the question back again when I was checking to see if there was an answer from him.

I'm more familiar with the procedures for making article contributions (though I only contribute every few months) than I am conversing with editors, but I'm also still trying to familiarize myself with the various guidelines for each online encyclopedia. I'm not very familiar with the procedures for leaving questions for editors, so I end up fumbling around their talk pages not sure if that's how/where I'm supposed to talk to them.

To add to the confusion, I actually just made a contribution to a Conservapedia article, but the particular editor for that article is a Wikipedia editor. I couldn't find TK's talk page on Conservapedia, but followed the links and wound up here. Also, I'm not sure how to log in on Wikipedia when I'm required to use an alias for my contributions here, while being required to use my actual name for contributions to Conservapedia. Hence, I'm a little confused here...

If you could help or advise, I would greatly appreciate it. And if I'm not supposed to leave a question on TK's talk page, can you tell me where I should ask him about my contributions to Conservapedia? I'm not seeing a way to do that on Conservapedia itself...

Thank you so much, DeanneB98.223.220.154 (talk) 00:29, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

It has all been archived. TK can't answer you, he is blocked. - π 00:39, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

And RA is whining, too, amusingly fucking enough. Talk page comments are not "vandalism". ħumanUser talk:Human 03:40, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Not this shit again! "I think it is a RW policy not to delete talk page comments unless they are wholly offensive and devoid of any content" - yes, exactly, devoid of content, that's what MC's comments are. The policy (isn't it ironic how he says I'm ruining this site by drowning it in policy and bureaucracy) was meant to ensure that people with differing opinions were not censored like at CP (e.g. Earthland). MC is not a person with differing opinion, MC is a troll. What he says is not his opinion, and he is not here to discuss. The only purpose his comments serve is to elicit the strongest possible emotional response. Removing his posts without comment is the best way to deny him what he wants: a response. -- Nx / talk 10:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion for the technically gifted Nx[edit]

A script/extension or whatever you call it that reads a page and, if it detects a <ref></ref> tag, automatically inserts ==Footnotes==<br><references/> at the foot? 12:37, 16 May 2010 (UTC) SusanG Toast

That's a bit complicated - one option is to append that stuff when you save a page if it has ref but not references. Problem is, you'd have no control over it, and it'd be difficult to detect when a ref tag is in nowiki, or if the references tag is in a template (e.g. {{reflist}}) - so essentially it would need to parse the whole page before saving it to the database - and that's not a good idea.
The other option is to display the reference list at the bottom of the page even if the references tag is not present, sort of like how categories work, i.e. you can put a category anywhere on an article, and you don't have to use a category tag, they'll be automatically added to the bottom of the output page. I think this would be a more feasible solution, but I think it was rejected at WP because of technical problems - unfortunately, I can't find the discussion. -- Nx / talk 14:28, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah. I thought it was pretty pointless really, just saw someone removing an unused "==Footnotes==" section and my mind went off on a tangent of its own. Would there be any point to a (hidden) category "Pages without references" auto inserted by a bot (like stubbot) that crept round the site once a week or so? Sorry but Sunday afternoons are boring. 14:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC) SusanG Toast
You mean for pages that don't have references at all, or pages that have ref but not references tag? -- Nx / talk 14:57, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Pages without any refs. Of course you'd need a "NoNoRefs" tag as well to stop refbot flagging unnecessarily. 15:02, 16 May 2010 (UTC) SusanG Toast
Not really. If "refbot" removed an empty footnotes section, it wouldn't try to do it again. Susan, you really are bored, aren't you? ħumanUser talk:Human 04:44, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Bot question[edit]

I switched WIGO:WORLD to the coloured format and noticed that we have "what is going on" in the top bar and "what is going on" in a heading below it. The second one seems superfluous so I was wondering, do the bots that do the archiving and best of use this as a marker to identify what to move? Basically, would getting rid of it cause the bots to break or go out of control or am I thinking that it's more complex than it really is? Scarlet A.pngmoral 14:21, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Most likely the bot uses the <!--worldbot--> marker, but you'll have to ask Pi to be certain. -- Nx / talk 14:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Of course, I should have checked the comments in the code! Although the sectioning does help hide those comments from the top-bar when it's edited (using the "0" button). Scarlet A.pngmoral 14:26, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
There's a slight chance that the worldbot tag is just a remnant of a previous system, and that the current bot doesn't use it. But likely not. -- Nx / talk 14:36, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't think "drama queen" is the right word, actually. The likes of MC and CUR were/are drama queens, bringing the subject back around to them or their pet topic constantly. Nx is a little different, I think, probably due to being hardened by cynicism generated by the usual reactions of the community to certain things. Although I have to admit that when I was considering a total rollback it was also partially for self-serving temper-tantrum reasons. Scarlet A.pngmoral 20:23, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
