Hey Susan, something I thought of last night... you had mentioned somewhere that you were starting a wiki. There is a lot of great meta-discussion about the founding and growth of wiki-type projects at meatball wiki: http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl that you might find interesting. RW was a "special case" in that it started with a score of fairly dedicated, enthusiastic editors (like CP did, too, although they were incompetent!). Just an FYI. Oh, and if you're back for more than lurking and the occasional comment, welcome! humanUser talk:Human 12:10, 1 April 2008 (EDT) Th hug.gifTh hug.gifTh hug.gif(treble hugs for Human. We do tend to follow each other via recent changes. Must have similar interests. Rational Edfaith 14:10, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

I'm just avoiding doing what I should be doing.
I like Rc - you come across things you'd forgotten existed. I'm an SFoholic - have been since the 50s but am now more selective (budgetary reasons!). I started with Alice in Wonderland - my mother read it to me in the cradle (actually knew it almost by heart before I went to school) SusanG 14:16, 1 April 2008 (EDT)
I read tons of the stuff for my first 30 years or so, but not as much since. Always read other fiction, too, but had a special place in my heart for SF. In high school I haunted the only used English book stores in Bogota buying up a lot of really old SF. Rational Edfaith 14:20, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

quantise[edit]

you want to collaborate on the QM article? what's your plan? A hamiltonian approach to quantum mechanics is a way to "express the total energy of a system using the momentum and position as variables". If we have an equation for a system if we put a hamiltonian operator onto that system, what the calculations will throw back at us is the total energy for that system, using the variables of momentum and position to calculate it. i think. it probably hasn't helped though. airdish 09:25, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

Nyaaaarghhhhh! I have a pure layperson's knowledge - I read FeinmanHawking for entertainment - I'm a pop science-oholic NOT a knowledge base. Don't think I'd be much help. Th unsure.gif SusanG 09:31, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
"Q is for quantum" by john gribbon is a good dictionary/resource if you could be arsed forking out for it. i've never read the feynman lectures, though i really should. airdish 09:33, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
Got it (somewhere).Trite but Bill Bryson's " A short History of Nearly Everything is about the level we should aim at. (Unless we want to be a text book of course. ) :) SusanG 09:36, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
ps James Gleich Genius is Feinman in a nutshell. SusanG 09:37, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
hmmm, i'll have to check them out. yeh, i don't think there's any point in us being a text book - there's better resources out there. if we can give people an appreciation of the need for the technicality while helping them understand generally what's going on, then we'll have succeeded. though how you describe the hamiltonian in this way is a bit of a trick. airdish 09:42, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

undent Been rootling round - I know I've got that Gribben book but can't find it, I've several by him. He aims, I think, at my level in his pop science books. The Bryson book is a layman's interpretation of everything from the big bang to Man - it has the advantage of being readable! Brief History of Time is the book that I understand while I'm reading it but ten minutes later I'm back in my fog of ignorance. :) SusanG 10:35, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

yeh, it's been a long time since i read "a brief history..." i was in secondary school. feel free to pepper me with questions, it might be a way to get some good explanations worked out. and, yeh, it'd help me remember all of my under- and post-grad work. plus if we got something worked out we could have respective celebratory guinnesses :) airdish 10:55, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

I wondered[edit]

If you were partial to a bit of Geordie folk-rock? I came across an awesome good clip (30 years old! Unbelievable) which stirred wonderful memories, with its old style Granada TV id, and the song itself, which is still a jukebox standard in the types of bar I visit, and always makes me think of a strawberry-blonde named Emma. Heady days indeed. Fox 07:21, 27 April 2008 (EDT)

Lindisfarne - yes - Saw them several times, last time was after the awful Gazza thing & the audience had gone downhill. Also a lot of the old folkies and the electric folk : Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention etc. Are you anywhere near Bromyard - Went to a Folk festival there in the late 60s _ I actually got up on stage with The Furies (Finbar & Eddy) - can't remember what the song was but I was very fond of accompanying myself on the bodhran while singing intoning 'She came through the Fair'. Can't actually remember much about it - the village was drunk dry by Sunday p.m. & they were ferrying in Cider & Perry from local presses - Those Were The Days My Friend! SusanG  ContribsTalk 07:37, 27 April 2008 (EDT)
I'm around 115 miles from Bromyard - I've stopped off there in the past on travels, but never for the festival. This year I'm planning to get to - among others - the Chippenham folk festival at the end of May (only around 50 or 60 miles away), particularly as the magnificent Solas will be headlining. Weather should have perked up a bit by then, too :D Fox 11:12, 27 April 2008 (EDT)

Well, I'm back on line on the old machine - now downloading Firefox - IE's awful! Still no remote!
Right, some of those computer genii out there: Message on broken machine was:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CONFIG|SYSTEM
You can attempt to rep[air this file by starting Windows Setup Using the original Setup CD-Rom.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
Naturally I haven't got the disc & as I said above the shop's gone! (and the download's running very s l o w)- BUGGER. SusanG  ContribsTalk 06:31, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
This may be asking the obvious, but did you make a backup disk when you first got the pc? Anyhoo, this is what you are looking for. Fox 06:52, 28 April 2008 (EDT) Edit to add: Just a thought; this happened to me a few years back and I fixed it by using a friend's copy of XP to boot up and repair. Worth trying if you know anyone who still has their disc. Also, it was the first sign that my hard drive was shot to pieces, so be aware that fixing it this one time may just be the beginning of your travails :( Fox 07:08, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
Another side note, windows xp discs don;t know your serial number, so a borrowed disc will work with the s/n you have. PS, what's an "m/c"? Good luck! humanUser talk:Human 12:47, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

I find that my right big toe or an obedient child make good substitutes for remote controls. Fox 15:46, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
Unfortunately it's my freeview "digibox" - no buttons - I've bought a TV with built in freeview but it doesn't seem as sensitive as the digibox. It won't pick up channel 5 & its associated channels - no great loss but it also won't pick up BBC 7 (my constant companion) - happily that was what my digibox was set to when I lost/mislaid/etc the remote.
Just noticed this evening - ASDA has digiboxes for £15.95. Jollyfish.gifGenghisRationalWiki GOLD member 16:54, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
They're surprisingly variable in their sensitivity. Some will only pick up the strongest stations, while others are less picky, I've had 4 and the only one that got all the channels was by Alba. (we're in a poor reception area here & the aerial also makes a helluva difference, as does the quality of the cable from it!) SusanG  ContribsTalk 17:02, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

GLA[edit]

How dare you fling about accusations of fascism based on a single, accurate edit on the nature of the GLA? Do you think pretending that facts don't exist is anti-fascist? Try and think more before you post. I am fucking furious with you. Fretfulporpentine 07:41, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

The GLA is a Regional body yes, but it's a pure talk shop with no more relevance , or even less, than say the Arts Council. & I don't think that broadcasting their solitary right wing member to the loathsome CP is in any way praiseworthy, even if done to publicise the inherent danger. PR would be fairly devastating to any Government as the chances of getting a working majority, with no promises to weird parties, would be fairly remote for any of the current parties. If Bugler was indeed merely trying to be honest, then I think that he is mistaken - "any publicity is good publicity". (repeat of WIGOT entry) SusanG  ContribsTalk 10:05, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

The includeonly fix seemed to work. Did you see Sid's suggestion of using "section" tags as an alternate way of doing this? Although right now nothing is "broken", that would allow an easy way to define precisely what gets put on the main page from each cover story, which I think would be good, since right now the amount of text varies a lot, depending on what has been noincluded in the first 750 characters. Just curious as to what you think... humanUser talk:Human 14:05, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

Hope your visit wan't too serious Susan. I was going to send flowers but asked an almoner to look in on you instead. I think the whole EM radiation thing in hospitals is generally as much woo as it is on planes. When my wife was undergoing her cancer treatment there was a blanket ban on mobile phones in wards in the local hospital, although the consultants quite happily carried them around all the time. When my wife had her stem cell transplant at the QE hospital in Birmingham, it was such a shitty environment that patients were almost encouraged to use their phones so as to keep them from getting depressed! I appreciate that there may be more of an issue in the CT imaging dept. but just last week I had a scan on my jaw at another hospital and there were no warning signs around. Mind you, they didn't charge for the car parking there either. Jollyfish.gifGenghisRationalWiki GOLD member 16:15, 30 May 2008 (EDT)
First dose of chemo & checking for adverse reaction after removing a naughty body part a couple of weeks ago. The Almoner, I'm assured, has been put in her place - she was only a part-time unpaid volunteer. Mobile (cell) phones are not allowed because some company's got the phone franchise for the payphones (allegedly). There's no-one who thinks there's any chance of phones interfering with equipment - more likely the other way round. Apparently someone once took a phone into one of the scanners & it overheated & alarmed at the fire station - causing no end of amusement. SusanG  ContribsTalk 16:44, 30 May 2008 (EDT)
