A doppelgänger is a double of something. The term comes from German Doppel (double) and Gänger (walker) and originally referred to a ghostly double.[1]

Some people report seeing doppelgangers of themselves.

Explanations[edit]

Non-supernatural[edit]

The most likely explanation for seeing a doppelgänger is coincidence and random chance. Another, less likely though non-supernatural, explanation is that the doppelganger and the observer are related somehow.[note 1]

Supernatural[edit]

Supernatural explanations generally involve

Replacement conspiracy theories[edit]

Not to be confused with Great replacement.

A semi-common type of conspiracy theory is that a celebrity or politician was replaced with a clone, double, or through technology, usually after they (supposedly) died. The exact details of how the replacement was achieved don't matter, what does matter is that they were replaced. High profile people accused of being replaced include Paul McCartney, Avril Lavigne,[3] Hillary Clinton[4] Rudolf Hess[5] and Joe Biden.[6] Donald Marshall claimed the Illuminati, led by Queen Elizabeth, was going around cloning celebrities in secret bunkers after they died.[7]

Notes[edit]

  1. There is a famous image of cousins Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and George V of the United Kingdom standing next to each other. Looking at the image, they are almost indistinguishable[2]
