Essay talk:Video games are bad
So much facts[edit]
There are just so many facts in here it hurts my eyes, I think I need to take a break every hour reading this. C6541 (T↔C) 16:20, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
Wow... This essay... Just... Wow... The days of video games being the domain of 12 year-olds are long past. The average gamer is between 25 and 35 now. The majority of games are made for the demographic most likely to play them. Giving a child a game like Grand Theft Auto or Mortal Kombat (games that are now old or downright ancient, respectively) for Christmas is absolutely no different to giving a child a film like Debbie Does Dallas. Further, there has never been any credible evidence that shows a causal link between violence and the playing of violent video games. All of the research done on this subject has come to the same conclusion - that there is no link between violent behaviour and violent games. This myth belongs in the same category as "playing Dungeons and Dragons leads to devil worship" and "listening to heavy metal leads to suicide". - Little kids and moron adults who refuse to move out of mommy's house play video games. This is an obvious truth. When married men make them mistake of playing video games, the marriage terminates. Is this really a hard concept to understand? --Elvis is King (talk) 03:30, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
- I think my irony detector just broke... can't decide if this guy is serious or not. Nullahnung (talk) 09:17, 12 November 2014 (UTC)
- I am serious. Grown men playing video games is destroying the family by resulting in men neglecting their real life responsibilities in childrearing and work, and often results in health problems that can lead to premature death. --Elvis is King (talk) 01:25, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- I happen to know quite a few counter examples of productive, health-conscious adults with video games as a hobby, so excuse me if I find it difficult to believe that you are being serious. Nullahnung (talk) 09:27, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- These people do not exist; they have mental health issues and are trying to escape reality. Only children and adult males with severe issues will be inclined to play video games. --Elvis is King (talk) 00:58, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

I actually don't disagree with a lot said in this essay, though I don't think exposing kids to 'obscene' language is particularly worrisome. While there are some words that are deeply hurtful that kids don't need to be hearing, I don't see how words like "shit" or "fuck" would 'cause damage' to children. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 01:59, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Were you both influenced by this charming fellow: Jack Thompson in some way? Video games don't by themselves cause or promote violence. Studies have repeatedly disproven such a connection. I thought everybody knew that. Nullahnung (talk) 09:10, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- As a non-American young adult, I'm pretty sure I haven't been influenced by this Jack Thompson person you speak of. Is he one of those people claiming video games are the only/main cause for school schootings or something silly like that? I do think that (some) video games, along with other popular media, contribute to the increasing normalization/popularization (and sometimes glorification) of violence in our society, however. While I doubt anyone committing gruesome acts in the virtual gaming world would develop a motivation to commit such acts in the real world just from the act of playing games, I don't think it'll have a very good influence on their behaviour either. Unless perhaps if they consciously use it as an outlet for violent urges that already existed prior to them taking up the habit of gaming. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 12:37, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Video games are the problem. All modern American mass shooting stories report these young men having played violent video games, and trends of violence among males who play video games shows how they affect the well being of themselves. One simply has to keep an open mind and realize that video games are the major cause of the violent attitudes of these young men. After playing a round of Grand Theft Auto they gain a thirst for violence and start cussing like sailors. I have seen this in my own neighborhood. --Elvis is King (talk) 00:58, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

- They result in the tainting of these kids' minds and being young and impressionable, they tend to repeat these words. --Elvis is King (talk) 02:01, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, but how are these kids' minds worse off by knowing certain words for concepts that they already knew about - poo and that icky stuff mom and dad do sometimes? Do the words have some magical properties that brings whoever knows and uses them closer to moral decadence? 141.134.75.236 (talk) 02:09, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- If they know these things, they will repeat them. It is all about worldview. If they hear these things, it leaves a certain impression that they are okay and accepted, which leads to inevitable moral decay. --Elvis is King (talk) 02:37, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Don't plenty (adult) devout Christians also use those words, though? Are they infected with moral decadence then, or might this supposed connection between words like "fuck" and "shit" and a hedonistic non-Christian worldview just be a superstition? 141.134.75.236 (talk) 02:45, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- It is merely the truth. The Scriptures say that one is to use clean and undefiled speech, so these persons are obviously sinning by using such foul and reprehensible language. It is simple, really. One just has to consider that there is none of this sort of vulgarity in the Scriptures, so there is no need for God-fearing persons to defile their vocabulary. Aside from the Biblical authority, it simply sounds crass and unprofessional and children need not use or hear it. --Elvis is King (talk) 02:48, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Your idiotic attempt at trolling people wonderful essay on some bullshit that sounds scarily like right-wing rhetoric important social issue is a brain-dead SJW attempt to get a rise out of people excellent way to examine the non- harm that these evulz do to people. - I am merely attempting to expose the evils of the world. Video games are an evil which promote violence, stupidity, illiteracy, sexualization of women, profanity, and other forms of iniquity which are bringing down the world slowly, but surely. --Elvis is King (talk) 21:26, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

- He is right. We need to get away from video games and back to hacking at peasants and heretics with battle axes after crushing people's bones with maces. Depictions of, and watching actual, violence never existed before video games. If only the government could restrict what we see, hear, and read to never suffer this again. - Seriously, anyone who disagrees with you morally is an "ungrateful narcissistic evil profane sexually deviant illiterate drug abusing moronic imbecile"? Maybe you should get some help in your strawmanning of people you don'tlike. I've seen and read things from centuries ago that are more profane than anything we produce today. The Bible itself involves genocide and killing of small infants along with sexual deviancy that would never get to market in book/movie form. Should we keep the Bible since it is so profane as well? EmeraldCityWanderer (talk) 01:56, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, because you all are ignorant fools who need to be saved and see the light of the Lord. The Bible is God's word, and is divinely inspired by Him. These truths in it are there to display how harmful a decadent liberal lifestyle is. --Elvis is King (talk) 18:30, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

- So, what video games did the catholic church play when they started the Spanish Inquisition? What video games inspired the Nazi Party to build the concentration camps? My point to the writer of this "essay" is this- video games are meant to be fun and another point is not all gamers live at home. There are plenty of people who don't play video games but watch TV non-stop and another thing, just because an adult plays a video game does not mean they live at home. If someone lives at home with their parents, they may have other reasons than not wanting to leave the nest (figure of speech)- disability, financial hardship or it is just easy financially to live at home but still go to work. To say only adults who live at home play video games or video games inciting violence is pure ignorance.--Rationalzombie94 (talk) 21:51, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

- I resent that accusation. I am a young man who doesn't drink, do drugs, or smoke cigarettes, and I get seven to eight hours a sleep a day. I spent Thanksgiving helping my elderly, disabled aunt attend the celebration at her son's house so she could see her three grandchildren, and I'm organizing my co-workers to collect money for our boss's recent bereavement (her oldest daughter died of complications from lupus). I do not cahoot, and I have never cahooted, you small-minded paranoid little man. 'Apologize and mean it.
- I read the Bible cover to cover. The story of the Fall of Man and the Tower of Babel indicate God's afraid of humanity, Exodus shows he used to be pretty touchy (though I like the idea of God's Butt as a precedent for conceding a small piece of information to someone even if they can't have the whole thing), the sections on the Judges and Kings are good reading with lots of massacres and smiting and characters. Job got a raw deal, though. Then God had a kid and softened up--for the best, I believe--and Jesus seemed pretty cool. Didn't see anything where he denounced homosexuality--that was back in Leviticus with all the dire promises that eating oysters and rare steak will bring upon you boils and plagues and diverse ill fortune. Jesus had a lot to say about divorce, though. And paying your taxes and being a good citizen, for some reason. And then Revelations, well, it seems John the Revelator only had mushrooms to eat. Heaven sounds kinda garish, but I'll give benefit of the doubt because of the mushrooms.--Maxus (talk) 04:55, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

- I am simply telling the truth that liberals wish to censor because they are inconvenient. It is obvious that the website you mention isn't conservative enough, not declaring the truth and that sexuality is a dirty evil created by Satan after the Fall of Man in order to tempt human beings to get away from God. I would not trust Chicken Boy, since he is a tyrant who abuses his authority, and also is a moronic man-child who incessantly drools over Taylor Swift and bans me every time I call him out on it. Are you going to side with a steward of the truth, or some imbecile? --Elvis is King (talk) 01:52, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
