Template talk:Welcome
Substitution[edit]
Why does this template tend to be transcluded on talkpages rather than substed, given than the welcome message on one's talkpage surely shouldn't change everytime someone edits it? Myrtonos@ It just doesn't make sense. 00:26, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
Sigs and indents[edit]
More and more I'm seeing those, like myself, who like to welcome new editors having to ask the newbies to sign their posts and use indents. How do others feel about
- Adding this to the standard welcome template
- Having a variant of the welcome template that has this info
I have insufficent wiki-fu to do this otherwise I'd make a start on option 2. Innocent Bystander (talk) 15:24, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- How about Template:Welcomesign? (Now renamed {{Wsign}} over redirect, for your convenience.) Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 15:34, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- Willing to bet the relevant information might get read less often buried on a templare as opposed to appearing as a distinct message. PowderSmokeAndLeather: Say something once, why say it again?. 15:36, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- Will the "less often" be significant, though? The chief part I remember about my welcome to WP was the "please use tildes" part. That, and the feeling of recognition and response. Intransigent users may still be offered repeated instances of the sign template, with invective escalated at your discretion. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 15:44, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- My invective is nothing if not discrete. PowderSmokeAndLeather: Say something once, why say it again?. 15:53, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I'd call your invective continuous, if and only if I could be assured the audience were receptive to math puns. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 16:45, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

- Since both message are templated, what's the problem? Adding a section about signing below the welcome template doesn't require any significant additional effort.--ZooGuard (talk) 15:57, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- There is no problem. If you don't find it onerous to type {{welcome}} {{sign}}, then go ahead and do it that way. Others, myself included, might prefer to slap on a single template including both messages. (I tend to bristle when someone tries to tell me what does or doesn't constitute "significant additional effort" on my part.) Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 16:45, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- For those of us who didn't know about the sign template it was, indeed, "significant additional effort". Now I know. However, I quite like {{Wsign}} so thanks SJC. Appreciated. Innocent Bystander (talk) 18:38, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Time for a few updates?[edit]
What do you think? I've added links to the RationalWiki page (including via the image), the bar & WIGOs. Anything else we should highlight to new editors? WeaseloidMethinks it is a Weasel 21:51, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
- I like the links to RationalWiki. At first blush, I didn't like the addition of the WIGOs, but upon further consideration I don't think it's a bad idea. The WIGOs are potentially a good, fun way for newcomers to contribute to RW, since editing articles may be a little intimidating to some of them. (Note I said "potential", so feel free to describe how it's the worst possible idea.) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 22:06, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
- Don't forget: it's generally transcluded rather than substed. So any alteration will affect every page with it on. Scream!! (talk) 22:48, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hence why I opened it up for feedback before changing the high-use template itself. WėąṣėḷőįďMethinks it is a Weasel 23:18, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

The sign parameter doesn't work[edit]
At least, not as intended. The doc says to add 2=sign to add a sign message. The code to do it: {{#if:{{{sign|}}}|{{sign}}|}}
This means that if the parameter named sign has a non-empty/null value, it adds the message. For instance, you need to write {{welcome|sign=1}}
or even {{welcome|sign=ooh, yes please}}
. This is probably bad. Should I just change it to test the value of {{{2}}}? Shame on whoever added this for not testing it —Kazitor, pending 21:12, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Changed the doc to describe it properly. It's still kinda ugly, but changing it and allowing backwards compatibility would be yuck. —Kazitor, pending 10:56, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Sqrt-1[edit]
Hi @Sqrt-1, I would recommend first going to the talk page before applying changes to highly used templates (check the warning). I don't even object to your change but I would please ask you to apply changes after recommending it on the talk page. Thank you! — Godless Raven talkstalkwalkbalk 🌹 05:48, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
