I'm in ur perl, unpacking ur values[edit]
I'm not sure if I entirely understand what it is you need to do from your description, but unpack is almost certainly the function you want to use for the reading, then one of pack or printf for the writing part depending on my rather ambiguous reading of what you need to do with the data. A quick example of what you need to do would help me give you more specific advice. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 19:49, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
What I have is a binary file which looks like this with a hexdump (2-byte words):
1 1921 8058 0000 0000 0002 0821 4616 1136 1300 0010 0000 1000 008F FF01 1600 32FF 0007 8100 0000 0002 21 0000 0100 0000 001B 5800 0200 0001 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0007 8100 0000 0000 0007 C300 0001 0000 41 0000 0301 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0101 0000 0DAC 6DAF 0060 9003 0400 0370 0003 0006 0000 0000 61 0000 0000 0701 0001 0102 0000 0DAC 6DAF 0480 1003 0400 0370 0003 0012 0000 0000 0000 0000 0701 0101 81 0103 0000 0DAC 6DAF 0480 1003 0400 0370 0003 0012 0000 0000 0000 0000 0701 0201 0104 0000 0DAC 6DAF 101 0480 1003 0400 0370 0003 0012 0000 0000 0000 0000 0701 0301 0105 0000 0DAC 6DAF 0480 1003 0400 0370
Now stuff like the initial 1921 is a decimal file number and I would like to be able to read and display a byte or word without the OS interpreting the hex as an ASCII code. In the K-shell scripts I could just assign the bytes to a string. Obviously I can do direct hex comparisons later on but I only started this about 45 minutes before I left the office so I want to be able to display the actual hex values as a string while I debug my program. I should point out that as a complete and utter noob to Perl I had only got as far as setting up the file handles and reading/writing bytes. Unfortunately I only have an old introductory Perl printed reference book although I have a stack of e-books they're not always so easy to navigate. ГенгисRationalWiki GOLD member 20:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- So, if I think I understand what you want to do you want to read the values in this example as shorts and write them as hex?
- That's a fairly simply thing to do, the quick and dirty way to do it goes a little something like this:
<code> # read the whole damn file in to memory. Memory is free, right? my $contents = <FILE>; # unpack the values as shorts, I'm assuming network byte order here since you mentioned these were originally # sparc and sparc is big endian. Change to S* for little endian shorts. my @shorts = unpack "n*", $contents; # write each value as hex foreach (@shorts) { printf "0x%x", $_; } </code>
- Anyway, if that's not quite what you want to do, it all goes a little something like that. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 21:06, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- The files are a mixture of ASCII, EBCDIC, shorts, longs & hex with pointers to other parts of the file so I need to read in anything from a nibble to several words. Previously I just kept track of my offset and read in the requisite number of bytes offset from the start of the file. Shell scripts don't have a lot of functionality but it was the best there was when I originally wrote them. With Perl I can read the values directly rather than converting them into hex strings first. The endian thing threw me for a while and that's why I decided to embrace Perl. Before I was using od (octaldump) and with linux on a PC the byte order was reversed however as the data are read in directly to a Linux machine the byteorder evens itself out. Thanks for the info I'll give it a go tomorrow. Генгисmutating 21:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- There are unpack conversions for more or less everything you need (well, except EBCDIC, just how archaic is this data? Anyway, CPAN is your friend here.) It's just a case of writing the right format string, really. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 21:41, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

- Scholar google is a great resource really. It allows you to see the abstracts of most papers, and you can search for "works that cite" a given paper. If you havent explored it much I highly recommend it. Google is dominating academic research now like they have everything else they touch. As for our general coverage, I agree whole completely, and have been focusing my efforts on expanding and creating articles totally unrelated to CP. Did you get yesterday's edition of the Daily Express? I have, but my photocopier isn't big enough to fit the page in it. It ran the headline "Keep Out, Britain's Full Up" in regards to immigrants, so I thought it'd go well on the Daily Express article, and as you uploaded the Daily Mail picture last month I thought I'd ask. - I don't bother scanning them (and I'd never buy them Mrs. K wouldn't have them in the house). I get the mini front pages from their website. And yes I did download yesterday's "Full-up" headline. I had thought of maybe having a random front page or saving some classics for an animated gif. I also plan to increase the Diana gallery as they add to it. Don't let that stop you doing it though because sometimes I'm out marauding and the Express or Mail aren't always delivered to the central-Asian steppes. - Well as it is for an article specifically about them it falls under the terms of fair use for comment and criticism. It's often a good idea to check Wikipedia to see what images they use and what licensing terms are applied, for an idea of what is acceptable. Fair use is not applicable when you download other people's © photographs/illustrations to pretty-up an article like Joaquin does all the time at CP. Magazine/book/newspaper covers or advertising material usually qualifies if it is about the publication or product and is reproduced in it's original context. But I'm not a lawyer so don't quote me on this. ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. 16:35, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

- Obvious question then is why you didn't spell it "Di-ah-go"? Sorry, I was just trying to help. ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. 19:09, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Bahahahaha[edit]
"I now have this creepy image of Andy in the showers at Harvard sneekily comparing cock sizes with Obama after a game of raquetball or something." Hahaha classic! AceMcWicked 21:06, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
- I know. It should have been spelt racquetball. ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. 09:47, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- Foolish Genghis, no wonder you couldn't conquer Afghanistan. AceMcWicked 10:20, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- Ew. But that would explain everything. Didn't someone say the same thing would explain Nick Griffin? moral 10:53, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Join the 'Free Marcus Cicero' defence team[edit]
Genghis, I am offering you the chance to redeem yourself and join my organisation. Marcus Cicero has been dragged through the mud and slandered. The elite are crushing him. Stand for him Genghis. Stand up for his rights.
Just ask yourself, what would Clement Atlee do? Lunacy (talk) 15:41, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

- But the age of chivalry is gone; that of sophisters, economists, and calculators has succeeded, and the glory of Europe is extinguished forever. Never, never more, shall we behold that generous loyalty to rank and sex, that proud submission, that dignified obedience, that subordination of the heart, which kept alive, even in servitude itself, the spirit of an exalted freedom! The unbought grace of life, the cheap defense of nations, the nurse of manly sentiment and heroic enterprise is gone. It is gone, that sensibility of principle, that chastity of honor, which felt a stain like a wound, which inspired courage whilst it mitigated ferocity, which ennobled whatever it touched, and under which vice itself lost half its evil, by losing all its grossness. Edmund Burke. Lunacy (talk)

- Ah yes, but you forget the misattributed Burke quotation; All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. Lunacy (talk) 16:28, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Makes sense. So instead of doing nothing and letting evil succeed, we should act to keep you binned. Tetronian you're clueless 16:36, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- What, in your eyes, make due process and legal principles so emancipatory? It is against the police state which I'm protesting against. The trolls rights movement, just like the African American and Indian independence movement has had humble origins, but the principle of a world where trolls, regular users and computer dorks can hold hands and sing together is a principle worth fighting for. I've upgraded the forum to phpbb3. The conversion script went pretty smoothly, but if you see any problems you know where to find me. -- Nx / talk 23:08, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
