You own mannequins? I knew there was something about you that I liked! We here have a total of five, not counting the (cheap) Halloween "butler" that talks whilst holding a candy dish. Ours are ALL male: a natural tone, a stark white (flattop, stainless steel head), another natural toned guy with molded "hair" and a grayish guy with a hands on hips look (when he's all put together). I don't count the wood "drawing mannequin" that is a wood version of a rough pencil sketch. Nor have I included the wood skeleton one, both of those are life sized but not quite what one thinks of when one hears (or sees) "mannequin" . CЯacke® 15:42, 16 May 2008 (EDT)
Here are a few of them. When I got my red "pump" telephone it cross-pollinated my queen & phone collections! I also have masks and a miniature suit of armor... humanUser talk:Human 15:47, 16 May 2008 (EDT)
Oh, I also took my "human skull" plastic model and "aged" it and mucked it up to make it look "real" - people actually believe me when I tell them that I dug it up in my swamp out back. Yup, I own a swamp, too... humanUser talk:Human 15:50, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

I haz been thinking[edit]

I know a dangerous task. But someone haz to be doing it. I will move this to the appropriate place when I iz done. I'm editing here to avoid ECs.

Question: Why does it matter what one believes?
It only "matters" when one acts on those beliefs in a way that affects other people. Having and holding a belief that has no rational basis is part of being human.
To deny such, to strive for complete rationality, is a "belief" per se, that is not totally rational!
The bane as well as the boon of Homo sapiens is that we are able to have this sort of "mental illness" and not just survive with it but thrive. It is not rational to fashion a cutting implement from a rock, unless a fantasy of being able to cut something with the implement has already been envisioned within the mind of its creator. Being able to predict the future is part and parcel of any religion and is borne out of this internal fantasy realm that includes creativity and supposition.

I think everyone would agree with your first point. However do not try to associate religion with irrationality and rationality with atheism, and have the two pairs be mutually exclusive. Setting religion aside, irrationality is one of the qualities that makes consciousness in humanity. Everything else works rationaly, perfectly. One of the things that makes conscious beings unique is that we can act irrationally. Lyra § talk 17:19, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
Yes, this is the point and one that I woulda put on the talk page when I was DONE...but no matter.
My point is that the same "thing" that gives rise to our unique mental abilities to invent things that do neat things is the exact same thing that gives rise to religions. Most people, (in my view) view religion as sort of a necessary (evil, if you like), function of humanity. To suggest we "opt out" is fine if advocating on a solitary level but to bring it to the level of mandatory for full recognition as a fully functional rational human being then I think that falls beyond the pale, a sort of "orthodox atheism", if you will. CЯacke® 17:32, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
I've think that the more atheist you get in your worldveiw, the more like fundamentalists you become, I agree. I don't personally think that all religion will or can ever be abolished, rationality or irrationality aside. Lyra § talk 17:44, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
Right. Religion is the "dark side" of creativity. Basically. CЯacke® 18:01, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
I hate to stick my atheist nose in, but it's the promulgation of religion that I dislike - I could go on, but I think you all know my POV by now, so I'll shut up. SusanG  ContribsTalk 18:07, 28 May 2008 (EDT)

I set this up[edit]

This is "just in case" we want to do it this way...and for practice for me in use of the side-by-side template. I was going to do a side-by-side-by-side article some time back to do a refutation on an essay that first needed to be translated into parsable English before any possible refutation could take place but got bored with it...it was purdy though. I noticed you have a nice little clock/calendar watermark in this screenshot... I can't seem to remember/figure out how to do that... help? ħumanUser talk:Human 02:40, 21 July 2008 (EDT)

It's a program called topmostclock. Being an Old timer sometimes I like the simpler things, analog clocks, tubed amplifiers: so instead of the windoze clock I gots this baby to let me know I've spent WAYYY too much time online.
I'm "supposed" to turn the clock off and sign outta CP when I do a screenshot like that but last night I was too tired/lazy to do so and shopped out the incriminating info, (also making Conservapedia "Trusworthy" again which I like to do simply because I can and also as a signature of sorts, when one sees the "trusworthy" on a .png you know it's a "Cracker". Two things...[edit]

  1. What does that whiskey line even mean?
  2. That McCain photo article itself appears to by a direct copy of a different, older article (from another site), with token bits added at the end. Would you mind awfully if I changed the link to a more substantial report? New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 15:49, 16 September 2008 (EDT)
As we both know I don't do much WIGOW much, probably for this very reason. Change whatever you like I don't mind. The "whiskey line" would be better if I had just copied the picture to a file and used it as a caption, but due to copyright issues and the fact I'm too lazy to actually do that, (hellididntusedtousethespacebarorpuncuateuntilthreeyearsago), I didn't. Shirky Link[edit]

The Clay Shirky link you put on the Mobocracy debate is very interesting - and very pertinent. I particularly loved

Geoff Cohen has a great observation about this. He said "The likelihood that any unmoderated group will eventually get into a flame-war about whether or not to have a moderator approaches one as time increases." As a group commits to its existence as a group, and begins to think that the group is good or important, the chance that they will begin to call for additional structure, in order to defend themselves from themselves, gets very, very high.

Err... has he hit the nail on the head or what? Silver Sloth 18:20, 8 October 2008 (EDT)

'Sactly. When one takes oneself too seriously is when the chance of making a fool of oneself is the highest. The calls for MOAR RLEUS usually come from folk who NEED to know where NOT to tread. Living life (or merely participating in a wiki) without CLEAR demarcations of just what to do next are quite scary for some people...Resources like Shirky remind us that just because it sounds rational and logical AND it feels like the "right thing" to do don't necessarily make it so.
It's a sort of "positive apathy", whereby doing nothing NOW saves loads of grief down the road. CЯacke® 11:11, 9 October 2008 (EDT)
