MEMO Happy New Year, Totnesmartin. This is from Useful Mei. It is an appropriate time for festivities, like alcohol. Today try not to eat too much, or too little. |

Fringe[edit]
Heya mate, hope you had a good Xmas, etc, etc, etc. I've been looking out of interest at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August, and as I know you perform at it quite a lot, I was just wondering how awesome it is and such, hiring venues, and if you get paid (which I'd imagine you don't but just wondering) SJ Debaser 12:50, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
- Paid? ha hahahahahaahaaa! we did it for the lulz! The big names get paid, but us bods don't, although there's a collection bucket at most of the free gigs. As for booking, best to start early - may at the very latest. And just hope you don't have to go on after someone whose act is all about her sister dying - we started every gig with no audience. Oh and the Baked Potato Shop is the best takeaway in Britain. Totnesmartin (talk) 13:00, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Grovel, grovel[edit]
My dear Mr Martin
I cannot tell you how it pains me to find that, however inadvertently, I am responsible for the theft and misappropriation of your valuable user name. I sincerely believed that my ability to 'create' this user identified as freely available and was unaware of any previous claim on your behalf.
Maybe I should turn to my close relative, Mei Culpa.

That's me: didn't get the "reddit" joke. I suppose I don't sound words as I read. According to S. Fry esq. (may he be praised) "reddit" was a Disney fabrication based on Californian frogs. yummy & honey(or marmalade) 14:55, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

- I wasn't complaining for my sake, but that I sometimes use the edit comment as a short-term intercom. The longer it's in recent changes, the more people can see it and contribute to the thread. And toast, I dread to think how people can read RW on the phone, let alone edit the thing. I remember you on the PDA after you got flooded out. I don't know how you didn't throw it at the wall. Per your advice[edit]
I'm on an article creation kick. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about the woo that's on the actual to do list. Therefore, it's mostly been politicians and countries. Any other ideas? Researcher (talk) 15:56, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- Try to stick to topics that you're interested in, rather than things that someone else likes. Politicians are mostly worth doing (except the ones that sit at the back, vote with the party, have boring finances/sex lives and don't rock the boat). Avoid topics where you're too close to the subject because you'll be tempted to whitewash - there's a whole chunk of stuff I try to avoid here because of that. Oh and feed the goat. Relativity[edit]
Yeah, I know too. It seems like there's the pop science like impression that quantum theory supercooled relativity, and now quantum theory is superseded by string theory and they were all invented by people... sshole 21:22, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- pop science is both a blessing and a curse, depending on the ratio of pop to science. Totnesmartin (talk) 21:25, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- Very true. Although I'd dispute the exact wording, "pop" doesn't necessarily mean "wrong" - it merely means "understandable". 'All science - to a degree - is "pop" science, otherwise no one would be able to learn anything. But still, it can curse people with a "little" knowledge and that'll confuse with "enough" knowledge which will then manifest itself as "don't be silly" - hence how it took a while for me to explain to someone why time wasn't three dimensional once. sshole 21:59, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- Pop science can be right or wrong - there's the (mostly right) Isaac Asimov/Stephen Jay Gould end and then there's the Daily Mail claiming every other thing causes cancer. - yes, and I knew some of the people running it! Bit out of my league, though, lots of tech stuff going on... it's a very green-friendly town, but's all tied in with a lot of new age stuff too. there are about six alternative medicine places here, a health food supermarket, vegetarian restaurants, shedloads of yoga, tai chi and reiki bods, and enough crystals to build a house - all in a town of under 8,000. It's a weird place, but that's the way I like it! and a huge Morrison's :s Totnesmartin (talk) 09:40, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- I'm kinda like minded about that stuff myself. Despite hating all the New Age shite, I'm actually very fond of hippies. Can't bear it when the conversation wanders to woo and the like, but they're basically the right kind of people. Hurray for the transitioners! DogPMarmite Patrol 15:56, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

- I have a Welsh-speaking Brother-in-law to thank for that. Interestingly, when I lived there in the early seventies, hardly anybody spoke Welsh, just a few families, and then only at home. I went back last year and it seemed like every third or fourth conversation I heard was in Welsh. Totnesmartin (talk) 10:50, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, the language had almost died by the 60s. They were starting to teach it to us in schools by 68 or so. Then the only Welsh speakers were the old ladies next door, who would go on and on in the way old ladies do over the fence or wall, in some strange tongue. Since that nadir the quirky langue de cymraig has been revived and WILL SOON TAKE OVER THE WORLD bwahahahaha! ħuman 10:53, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Almost died out? I came for a welsh speaking area. It was alive and well when I were a lad. Look you.--BobSpring is sprung! 10:56, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Like I said, the old ladies, like you, were still fluent. But they were all about to die off, like you. If you can learn out how to spell "from", you can start giving us lessons in langwiches! ħuman 10:58, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- My brother went back to live there a few years ago - there are some fanatics who won't speak English. But there was a healthy Welsh-speaking population when I was a lad. The school I went to was split 50 50 between pupils who were educated in Welsh and those who were educated in English. These were people who spoke Welsh at home. I rather doubt that the proportion of Welsh speakers went down afterwards.
- Of course it depends where in Wales you lived and I'm sure that use of the language varies - and has varied - widely over the principality.--BobSpring is sprung! 20:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- I lived in
MonmouthshireGwentjust north of Newport - the least Welsh speaking (although still proudly Welsh, boyo) part of Wales. You? Totnesmartin (talk) 21:13, 24 October 2010 (UTC)- Llandovery. :-) --BobSpring is sprung! 06:14, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- My driving licence, telephone, electricity and water bills, community charge, election forms are all in effing Welsh and my BBC channels default to Wales because of my postcode. However, I put up with it all because I get free prescriptions. ГенгисOur ignorance is God; what we know is science. 13:46, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

- I was based in Aylesbury at my old address (back when SusanG had checkuser), now I've moved across town I'm apparently in wp:Keynsham, according to whois. Totnes is lovely but its importance is pretty low nowadays. England should go back to a wool-based economy so Totnes can flourish again! Totnesmartin (talk) 10:13, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Either way, it was amusing! And didn't you move houses to Aylesbury, Martin? I was reading about Totnes the other day, but it probably wasn't important. ħuman 09:58, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Snowbeast[edit]
So, what did you think of that classic of American Cinema, the 2nd worst bigfoot movie ever made? TyrannisAn Iron, but caring, fist 18:45, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Second worst? What's worse? Anyway...laughable. Some bad films are so bad they're good, and some are just plain bad. Snowbeast was fun, but I won't be going back there for a very long time. Totnesmartin (talk) 19:25, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- The worst one is The Geek. It is a 1970s Bigfoot rule34. I refuse to discuss it due to trying to repress that memory. Thank you. TyrannisAn Iron, but caring, fist 13:51, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have Snowbeast on my hard drive. However, I'm still getting over the... experience... that was Hausu, before subjecting myself to that. I also want to dish up another one - Peter Jackson's Braindead (yes, that Peter Jackson). Another "so awful it's a classic" film. --Ψ GremlinZungumza! 14:01, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- Ahem. Snowbeast, The Geek, Bloodtide, Raptor Island, Axe 'em, Invasion of the Neptune Men, The Coleman Francis Trilogy, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, AND The Robe. TyrannisAn Iron, but caring, fist 14:14, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- I beg your pardon! Santa Clause Conquers the Martians is awesome! Why, I bet so-called "good" films like this Citizen Kane or whatever, don't even have sing-alongs! --Kels (talk) 14:29, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

- That's the genius of it. It's not a musical. And yet...it manages to have a sing-along anyway! Let's see Seven Samurai do that! (although the remake of Zatoichi almost did) --Kels (talk) 15:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
