Lógica‎[edit]

How did you translate the Lógica‎ page that you created? Bongolian (talk) 21:49, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

First, sorry for uploading the article, it was an error, it's incomplete. I used two translators to help me, and i, as a native, wrote the text.
Is there a standard translator for rationalwiki?
Thanks. — Unsigned, by: Livelongerandprosper / talk / contribs
@Spud What do you think? Maybe it would be a good idea to write a short page of advice for making translations as far as translation techniques that are acceptable? Bongolian (talk) 01:03, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Bongolian Yes, I think we need to set down some guidelines. By which I mean we should clearly state that it's OK to refer to the likes of Google Translate in the same way that you'd refer to a dictionary or a grammar book but that pages that rely entirely or mostly on machine translations are unacceptable. I think that statement can go on the RationalWiki:Languages page. I suppose we really ought to discuss this in the Saloon Bar first. Spud (talk) 04:12, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Spud Yes, I agree with you that primarily relying on machine translations for creating pages on RationalWiki is bad. A person creating a page should either start from scratch in the language in which they are fluent, or if translating should have a reading fluency or at least advanced competency of both languages. We can delete this page (Lógica‎) and move discussion onto the Saloon. Bongolian (talk) 04:22, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Bongolian So, i edited the article, now, i relied primarily on manual translation, i translated the rest of the article, but i have a question, is it mandatory to translate the quote?, because i don't know what was said in portuguese, in the series. Thank you. — Unsigned, by: Livelongerandprosper / talk / contribs
Which quote is this? Bongolian (talk) 08:36, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
:::@Bongolian "Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority." I can translate it, but i think that this specific episode wasn't translated to portuguese. — Unsigned, by: Livelongerandprosper / talk / contribs

The quote is from a 1968 episode of Doctor Who, if that helps you work out if it was ever translated or not. And, no, you don't have to translate it. You don't need to include a quote at the start of the article or you can replace it with a quote that's more meaningful to Portuguese-speaking readers. Spud (talk) 14:21, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Also, f you think it's appropriate, Livelongerandprosper, an alternative is to use the Ctransquote template (Template:Ctransquote), which enables you to include the original language and translated language. Bongolian (talk) 18:36, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
@Bongolian So, i did the corrections that were necessary and i added the Ctransquote template. May i publish the article? — Unsigned, by: Livelongerandprosper / talk / contribs
It seems reasonable to me, but I can only read Portuguese as far as my basic Spanish skills will take me. What do you think, @Spud? Bongolian (talk) 19:11, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
