RWW[edit]
How did you alter the config files on RWW? I'm merely curious. Evil time Hoover! 03:59, 3 March 2009 (EST)
- Er, are you asking how I changed LocalSettings.php? Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:12, 3 March 2009 (EST)
- Yes, and how you planned to deactivate IP editing. Evil time Hoover! 04:16, 3 March 2009 (EST)
- Well, I would've logged into RationalWikiWiki's server file... thingy (whatever it's called) via an SSH/FTP program, then navigate to LocalSettings.php, then change go to the line reading
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = true;
and change the "true
" to read "false
" instead. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:30, 3 March 2009 (EST) - That's the basic description. The step-by-step version won't do you much good if you don't have the password for root access. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:30, 3 March 2009 (EST)

If you'd like RWW to have a favicon: download this and put it in the directory where index.php is. As for the IP spam problem, installing the ConfirmEdit extension would be a better solution than locking out IPs completely. -- Nx/talk 07:13, 3 March 2009 (EST)
- This would probably be a good time to inform you that I don't know how to install anything, or put anything in the "directory where index.php is". You are a fucking asshole. A childish, grudge-holding asshole. And your example did not even "prove" your case - it was a comment on my talk page among many, before I even checked in that day, and of course, as you might recall (but probably not on your grudge list file) I participated in the whole guidelines upgrade. I repeat. You are a complete and utter fuckwad. In so many ways it's not funny. So go fuck yourself, jackass. I almost quit this wiki yesterday because you are such a giant flaming asshole, but luckily other people make it worthwhile.
So go fuck yourself. I repeat, in case you missed my point: you are an asshole. A childish, grudge-holding asshole. Get the fuck over yourself and your wikiwarring.
PG PS, you are a small-minded editor who is obsessed with your edit count and endlessly embarks on wiki-wide alterations without talking to other people about them. You also exhibit an interesting trait in that you continuously raise old issues with other editors that surely have been laid to rest by now. You accuse me of endless crimes and faults, and yet do not see the beam in your own eye. I think you might - should - take a week or so off and re-evaluate the anger and hate you send in my direction at the slightest provocation. I almost played your silly game of "quitting" and pmailing a few people to say "yeah, it was RA that made me go away" - but that is such silly drama. Get a life that involves more than your RW edit count and your imaginary battles with me.
PPS, to everyone else (who hasn't already) please ignore this. ħuman 01:18, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

- Shall I point out the irony of a 49-year-old man, who lives by himself and has made almost 60 edits a day over a regular eight-hour period a day for nearly two years, telling me to get a life? Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:51, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Pardon my intrusion, but was it necessary to use revision-hiding against Human's edit comment? I thought that was only supposed to be used if someone posted personal information, or something like that. ListenerXTalkerX 01:34, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
- I felt that his throwing in "Fuckwad" out of nowhere was inappropriate, so I rather impulsively "hid" it (sysops can still see it). I do admit that it was a rather causal usage of it, and that I perhaps should undo it. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:38, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Just popping in to stir things a little, but Human certainly has a point with the 'edits' jab. To many, having edits in the 000's seems to make them some sort of demi god in their own minds. They think this makes them a 'daddy' on the internet. Very sad indeed. MarcusCicero 07:30, 19 March 2009 (EDT)

Your latest soul-baring - from Human[edit]
"my ambition is not welcome here." Maybe not, maybe who cares (you, perhaps, if it makes you unhappy with yourself), but you are welcome here. That's all for now while I go back to read more. ħuman 06:38, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
"I want to be part of the backbone" You were, and are. ħuman 06:39, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for everything you did for this site. ħuman 06:40, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
"...wrote my own suggestion and promptly acted upon it. Everyone accepted it, and as far as I know the page is still that way. And I was so happy. That was when I realized that I loved doing this administrative stuff, that I could do that sort of thing it all day and be truly happy." That's not "adminning", it's participating. But that you helped and were happy with the result is very nice. I have had such moments. And many others where I yielded my stubborn opinions to the mob/smarter people. ħuman 06:43, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Don't anybody interrupt me and EC me while I read and think about and respond to the section addressed to me (and DP). ħuman 06:47, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
"(Hm. Looks like I failed to find that middle path.)" Yeah, maybe. That you don't want to be me when your fifty is OK - hell, do better! Not a bad goal.
"this site is your personal playground" - I welcome input from other users if they think I stifle commentary, debate, discussion, editing, etc. At worst I have two pet articles I mostly wrote - the United States one, and what PC moved to fun:Jesus. Hell, if I adore them so much, I "own" my original versions. Although, the wiki-edited ones are better, I think.
RA, I'm not sure how to respond - and I know I don't actually have to, I'm just commenting on your thoughts of many weeks in just a few minutes. We clashed, we also compromised. You will note that the section known as references on most wikis is now here called "footnotes". You did not "win" on that - you were "right". I hope you see the difference.
I guess, Jacob, in the end (is this the end?), I appreciate your coming back (you didn't really "leave", of course) and telling us what you think. That said...
"Trent promotes you across the internet as a site for debunking pseudoscience and a gathering place for skeptics, but beware the temptation to remain what you started out as: a dumping ground for articles that would never be accepted anywhere else."
RW1 wasn't even a site for "articles" - it was a hangout for wikisavvy people sick of CP. RW2 has a "mission", theoretically. If I was to leave, for weeks, or months, or years, I would probably be a bit surprised with what I found upon returning - but I think - hope? - I would recognize what Trent started.
I think you might have gotten, as you said, a little too personally involved - trying to be a big fish in a small pond. I've been there in several ways before. I am on a mailing list about some dumb cars, and apparently made the most posts in one year. Go figure. That was in I think 2005 or so. All I was doing was helping people fix their cars. This place is different. Very different, of course.
Perhaps you also got too involved in your quest to "matter" by competing with me, which sucked for both of us, really, since you are a decent guy and made endless useful contributions here. Were you affronted that I never made you a giant multi-layered barnstar, as I did for Trent? Did you ever notice that I have none? Best I've got is my Danish Writing Group medal on CP, for crying out loud.
OK, enough random whining, Jacob, I already have been missing you, too. You brought a lot to this site. Not everything you thought you were, but mostly all good. I wish you well, and obviously, fell free to drop in any time and say "hello". I (we?) would be very curious as to how your life is working out.
Signed,
Your friend, (I wept as I finished writing this)

Sorry to see you go, but I think you're wrong, this place is interested in what you have to offer, it just can't express its thanks properly. My only advice is: if it's fun, do it for the fun, not the recognition. -- Nx/talk 09:51, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, by the time I joined you were just about leaving on your hiatus, but I did check back on your userpage ocassionally to see what was going on with you. It quickly became abundantly clear to me, however, that you've been a pretty massive figure here, and so I just thought I'd like to say thanks for giving me and everyone else an escape from the endless disappointments of real life. Best of luck in the future, and thank you SJ Debaser 17:43, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Fare thee well[edit]
Happy belated birthday, & I'm sorry to see you go. I don't agree with everything you've written in the Parthian Shot (if such it is) but I won't pick holes in most of it. What really stands out to me, though, is the where was my "thank you", my "we appreciate your efforts"? bit.
The fact is, I'm sure everyone admires & appreciates the level of commitment & effort you've shown to the site, notwithstanding any little disagreements they might have you with you at any time. People might not constantly be saying "thanks for what you're doing" but I think the respect is there & is a largely unspoken thing.
OK, so Trent is more often thanked for his efforts, but that's because - 1. he oversees the server & hence gives life to the wiki itself, & 2. often we need to ask him to do technical stuff - either to upgrade something or because one of us has buggered something up, so it's natural to be grateful when we have to bother him to fix something for us. Most of the things that you do for the site are because of you're own choices, & ambitions, rather than something you've been asked to do, so there is less immediate cause to get spontaneous thanks.
It doesn't mean that they are less important for the site, but the site itself doesn't have a mouth to thank you. Think about it: when you're sorting out categories or formatting references, who are you expecting a thank you from? Those things might not benefit any one specific individual (hence you might not get any words of thanks for them), but they do benefit RationalWiki. It's just that RationalWiki itself (the website, not the people) cannot express its gratitude.
Perhaps the problem is that you're looking to the internet for personal validation, & that tends to lead only to frustration. At the time I got involved here, I was unemployed & in a pretty bad situation with my personal life too. So maybe I got a little too involved in the site, because it was the closest thing to a social life &/or a job that I had at the time. Ultimately, it was (& is) fun & interesting, but didn't really make me any happier. Now I'm working again, & living in a new city, but I still look in on RW sometimes in the evening. It means I can take it a lot less seriously, ignore the petty dramas or be entertained by them, but still sortof feel a part of it at some level, & know that I could be more involved again if & when I choose to. So anyway, my advice is, before you go looking for another wiki, to take time out & work on your real life for a while, as it may mean you can come back to RW with a different perspective.
That's it really. As I said to CUR recently, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Don't be a stranger. & If you must go, then good luck to you. WéáśéĺóíďMethinks it is a Weasel 22:25, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps I am just not at all up-to-date in the affairs of other Rational Wiki sysops and personnel, but I just thought that, since you felt you deserved it and because I agree, that I'd thank you for all you did for me. You and Human were the one who really taught me the ropes around here and are the reason I still am committed to this place.
