Very sorry to hear that, now get back to the books[edit]

Hey RA. Speech time. I don't think I've EVER had a serious moment here on RW, so this is the first one. You're young, and supposed to be studying. You have energetically thrown yourself into RW, but many of us here are not like you. I, for one, am a hell of a lot older than you, self-employed and have the luxury of having the time to focus on RW. You don't. These are crucially important days for you, and how you do in your studies matters a LOT to your future. RW will not die without you, and even if it did, it wouldn't matter much, if at all, in your life, in the long term. So - ignore us, we'll miss you, but I for one would rather you turn into a useful, educated member of society. Don't become beguiled by what is an unrealistic virtual intarweb replacement for what is a very real world. And now, back to the books, and enjoy it! Honestly, these are the best days of your life, don't fuck them up by listening to me and Human rabbit on at each other. DogP 01:49, 31 March 2008 (EDT)

Did I hear my name? Hehe. Yeah, us old farts have given up and can waste what's left of our decrepitude hacking around in places like this. You should have more balance - not to say that playing here isn't a healthy hobby, it just shouldn't push real life activities like school and courtship rituals to the side ;) humanUser talk:Human 14:44, 31 March 2008 (EDT)

Fixed Links?[edit]

Hey RA, hold up there with the fixed links - why are you doing that? All it does is freeze the refs in time. You may well have a reason, but what is it? DogP 16:13, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

It's standard practice to use static links. I know "standard format" won't satisfy you, so the "good" reason is that when someone reads the Wikipedia article, there is always a chance that they will find it at a moment when it's vandalized or when someone is in the middle of a rewrite, and it looks really ugly. Addtionally, there is always a possibility that the "intereresting" Wikipedia article will be butchered so it's not interesting anymore, or that the specific fact you're citing is removed. All these possibilities are par for the course on Wikipedia, hence the static links. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 16:18, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

The missionary position[edit]

My entry was meant only partly in jest. Why do you think it is called "the missionary position"? Along with bans on singing and dancing, and almost anything else that was fun, missionaries insisted their heathen friends would go to hell if they didn't stick to the first page of the Kama Sutra (actually I think it's page 46, but you know what I mean). Much like the insistence by evanagelical missionaries (and the Bush administration) today that abstinence be used in place of condoms to prevent AIDS in Africa. I hope RA is a strong and positive individual. If there is one thing that puts off studying, is when other people tell you to study. RA is clever (probably. Are you, RA?), so he knows that he must study. Dogged's persistence is deletery, unless RA is someone who must be kicked in the a. to get motivation. I was not. Tell me to study and I avoided it for a week just to show off. Editor at CPfor a change 15:54, 4 April 2008 (EDT)
RA claims to suffer from OCD - he should apply it to his schoolwork. Just concentrate on showing AS how much better public schools are than homskull. SusanG 16:04, 4 April 2008 (EDT)
Well, IN THAT CASE, RW should be banned. OCD and RW plus CP, that's a deadly combination! PalMD should publish an article on the dangers of RW+CP to people suffering from OCD. And then let it peer review by AS. Editor at CPfor a change 16:24, 4 April 2008 (EDT)

In a dispute with any other editor, you should explain your ideas about the changes on its talk page in flawless Korean instead of simply reverting. Even Wikipedia doesn't allow "reverting a reversion". But when a sysop, having higher editorial authority, reverts something - you ought to assume good faith in his part. He may know something you don't.

Remember, the idea is to create a lulzworthy encyclopedia, not to "have a discussion". You can always start a debate. Fox 13:49, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

Questions[edit]

I'd been quietly watching the "developments" but to be honest I assumed it was really just a lulzy thing, a "smoke and mirrors" exercise to generate paranoia over nothing. But now I don't know. And because of the amount of behind the scenes stuff and manipulation that goes on, I don't know whether Bob's expressed concerns or even yours are real, or just part of the show. In that respect, even if it is a psychological stunt, it has been 100% successful already. I know that if such a course of action as is being insinuated was to be put into practice, I wouldn't want any part of it. For me, it means I'm going to have to disassociate myself from the whole thing. Meh, there were too many TK socks here anyway :D Fox 04:04, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

I don't know whether you're still online RA, but I guess you can read this later if you've disappeared. In my opinion, it's pretty unlikely that the Ides group would plan anything semi-legal in the midst of RationalWiki, as it could easily go wrong. When has this kind of thing ever been planned in broad daylight before? It seems obvious to me that the purpose of this whole thing was to trick CP into thinking we might stage an attack. Even if it isn't, I'm confident that the explanation is something that doesn't involve Human and Trent ignoring the interests of the wiki at large.— Unsigned, by: 175.175.175.175 / talk / contribs 04:28, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

(ec)Maybe it's just a very effective mind fuck. I mean, I don't think the "Ides Folks" would do anything too drastic - they care as much about the future of RW as anyone (moreso, often). That said, this has all been very interesting to watch. It's a little ilovebees-ish, though I never really got anywhere with that. Of course, that was an alternate-reality game, and this is actual reality. I assure you that I know the difference --Arcan ¡ollǝɥ 04:31, 12 May 2008 (EDT) Did I mention I'm still sick and perhaps incoherent?

People who learned to type using typewriters use two spaces after a period. Computers put those two spaces (or what is deemd to be the correct spacing) in automatically after a period when you're using a proportional font. Rational Edthink! 14:42, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

What's a "proportional font"? --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 14:47, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Have you ever noticed that if you try to line up a column of words in the middle of a page without using a tab that it is impossible to line them up? A proportional font adjusts the spacing differently between each character or punctuation mark to look "good". So a capital "G" is a lot wider than a capital "I". On the other hand, when you type using pure text (like in a text editor or non-html email), the letters each take up exactly the same amount of space and they will line up in a column in the middle of a page without a tab. Rational Edthink! 15:03, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Trouble is HTML (And Wikitalk) won't repeat a space unless you put        as many times as you need (edit to see) SusanG  ContribsTalk 16:43, 15 May 2008 (EDT)
Strictly speaking it is a proportionally-spaced font. And if you want stuff to line up in a wiki, use a table. As for double spaces at the end of a sentence, they display exactly the same as a single space. There was some nutter on this wiki who took it upon himself to go round and "fix" these. What a senseless waste of time! Jollyfish.gifGenghisIs the Pope a Catholic? 17:26, 15 May 2008 (EDT)
The reason for the two spaces is that when editing on ze wikiz, you are looking at a non-proportional font. So, no "auto" double spacing after ze full stop. Also, typing two spaces gives one's brain time and space to rev up for typing a capital letter to start the next sentence. humanUser talk:Human 17:28, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

You might call it that. As for what I'm trying to do: the lack of a mother figure in my life has me insecure around those of the female persuasion, and analyzing gender ratios was an attempt to express my subconscious yearning for a return to the womb. Similarly, the absence of a strong father figure in my childhood makes me homosexual, and thus attracted to fascism. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 00:52, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Very funny. What I mean is, aren't the gender ratios among users and sysops firstly coincidental (you wouldn't suggest that the lack of sysops who identify as italian makes us prejudiced against them, would you?) and secondly impossible to measure accurately? ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 02:25, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Why don't you try your first argument again after running it past every supporter of affirmative action? With regards to your second argument, while the precise numbers are difficult to auger, especially considering that some editors may simply prefer to not identify their gender, the overall trend most assuredly skews heavily toward males—unless you're suggesting that 40% of our user base is secretly female? Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 02:53, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Firstly, you haven't really presented any logical reason why what I said was untrue there, you just noted that supporters of affirmative action would disagree. I'm sure they would, but they'd be wrong. Secondly, it might make sense to ignore all users whose gender isn't disclosed. And in regards to the popsicle thing, there was a shade too much detail there, I fancy. :) ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 03:15, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Firstly, I believe there is an intrinsic value in and of itself in maintaining a diverse community. Secondly, how do we determine whether someone is "openly" male or just assumed to be? The number of users who have explicitly declared themselves to be male is actually quite small. I don't think even AmesG has—he could quite easily be female: "Ames" could be a fake name, and though he has stated he has a girlfriend, he could just as easily be a lesbian. Cracker has stated he is "gay", but he could mean that in the gender-neutral way, rather than the male-specific way. Human (his picture can be seen on his personal site), Trent (mentioned in a newspaper), PalMD (again, there is a picture of him online), and myself are the only ones I know of who have explicitly stated that they are male. Barbara Shack, Lily The Pink, and Lyra Belaqua never explicitly stated they were female, so following your methodology of not counting those who haven't "outed" themselves, the female-to-male ratio among users on RationalWiki is... 3:5. Not bad. Mate, I dare say—your shitty methodology singlehandedly solved my worries about gender equality on RW. Well done. Reply to RA: Calm down :) I'm not trying to offend you, y'know.
Of course there is value in a diverse community, but the important part is equality of opportunity not equality of recognition. And you've distorted my argument about gender disclosure to an unrecognisable state -- basing our analysis on users who have revealed their gender seems (to me) to be more logical than assuming everyone is male but for those who identify as female. ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 04:07, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Did I distort it? That wasn't my intention, but I may have gotten carried away. However, I still think my point that only eight users have explicitly identified their gender still stands. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:13, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
We need not be as exacting as that. Judging a user's gender by their name would be quite acceptable, I think. And surely the precise judgement of gender is a problem under your own system as well? ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 04:18, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
I agree with extrapolating gender from names. I don't understand what the problem with my own system is—would you elucidate it for me? On an unrelated note, for the record, what is your gender? (Feel free to to not specify, if you would rather not say.) Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 04:38, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
Not a very important problem really, but your system, as I understand it, compares users you have identified as female against the rest of the group, as though they are sure to be male. Admittedly, this is as near accuracy as makes no difference when it comes to the sysop group itself -- as they've volunteered a lot of information about themselves over time -- but if we were to look at the wiki as a whole I don't think that method would be fitting. And I'm some arcane jellyfishian gender, probably :) ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 04:53, 25 May 2008 (EDT)

I'm confused now. And according to Wikipedia, jellyfish have a remarkably ordinary sexuality. They have male and female variants, and they reproduce by the transferral of sperm. That last part seems quite irresponsible, given that they're underwater. <stern>Hmmm.</stern> ~ Jellyfish! (TalkContribsLogs) 05:08, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
I believe the "transferral of sperm" is better described as "a big cloud of sperm which males eject and females get to wander through". One hopes God's injunction against spilling seed doesn't apply to jellyfish. (Or am I thinking of sea anemones?)
