Re: Moderator elections[edit]
(Context)
Thanks for the complinsult but let's try to avoid magical thinking. Do you want a moderator or do you want a politician? AD is great at wasting his time trying to talk sense into users who are committed to not listening to moderators, but he's unwilling to compromise his angelic image to pull a trigger when a trigger needs be pulled. We're not government officials; we don't need to worry about a "mandate." Vote for people who will do what you want moderators to do, not people who you think are politique or gosu or smart. People who are politique or gosu or smart can still talk it out if they don't have the usergroup and the specific authority of moderators.
Now, Stabby, I find your criticism of me in particular to be a little confusing. After all, I'm probably the most committed to discussion and procedure of anyone here. I'm proud of the fact that I've never issued a malicious block nor removed user rights in anger. I have a history of going easy on "trolls"; I was the original returner of MC's rights, I voted against his bans, I opposed unnecessary blockings and I frequently resysopped unpopular users like Brxbrx and Abd. When you say I don't play wikipolitics "smartly", I have to assume you mean I often go against mainstream opinion and insist on due process; I'm not sure about these "actions that have a mandate of nil behind them." Blue (is useful) 07:42, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've given up on the idea that Mods can accomplish anything. Let the community rot in its little hole while the mainspace editors and Foundation board do all the heavy lifting. (Mainspace editors make/improve the articles people come here for; Foundation board promotes them to the outside world while keeping the website afloat.)
- Your actions don't necessarily go against mainstream opinion (which is itself divided on any site action; there is no single "mainstream," really). Otherwise, you wouldn't so consistently be elected Moderator.
- However, you do a terrible job of picking your battles. You waste your time, and in the the process others' goodwill, fighting tiny battles. You know how I took every possible opportunity to bring the fight to Human back in 2008/2009? It sometimes feels like that's how you work — picking battles with no regard for whether "winning" will actually amount to effective change, or whether it's one of a dozen small battles that'll be repeated over and over. You also sometimes stick through a fight when it's clear you won't win; "principled defeats" do not accomplish anything on RationalWiki. People's memories are too fuzzy for that; all they remember is people fighting, with the most recurring names being associated negatively. Bow out, don't flare out. Skillful retreats minimize losses.
- Also, compromise. You often propose fully-formed policies and rules right out of the gate — so fully-formed, so "complete," in fact, that compromising on them is to utterly break them. But compromise is the nature of a wiki. Build some flexibility in to your proposals, allowing room for others to ruin them slightly without ruining them completely. That way, even after you've compromised all to shit, you've still managed a solid step forward. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 08:23, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- I appreciate your reply. I disagree, of course. I think you're projecting your politics with Human onto me with regard to Ace/Human/Nutty Roux. I don't see "defeat" and "winning" as relevant concepts in wiki policy discussions that are mostly pointless, and even if they were, the only example I can even think of for me picking a pointless/hopeless battle is when I argued for edit filters on non-vandalism. And I honestly think you're completely wrong about the last point; can you point to some times when I put forth a proposal and never accepted compromise? If it happens "often," surely it wouldn't be too hard to point to a couple. Blue (is useful) 09:14, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- You know, I had multiple tabs open, sorting through all of your 2011 edits, but then I realized... I don't feel like doing this. If you feel my advice doesn't apply to you, then ignore it. I don't have a ton of bookmarks tracking your efforts on site management, and I don't have the discussions you've partaken in over the years memorized. Before you play the "but if I really do what you say I do, then it'll be easy to find evidence" card, you know damn well how hard it is to build a case that anyone takes seriously. A half hour to an hour of browsing through old revisions, then another half hour carefully wording it for maximum effect. Then multiple hours of debating it, as we quibble endlessly over what I said.
- I'd rather completely stop editing this wiki then wade through shit like this again. Which is exactly what I did for a few days. So fuck my advice and fuck this thread. Unless it has to do with the Foundation proper, I'm not going to delve into any thread revolving around wikipolitics from now on. I've been intending to rewrite the paleoconservatism article, but was afraid of being forced to pad out the "high-quality" citations of VDARE and Chronicles with a bunch of Z-list blogs run by whiny cranks. Accounting software[edit]
With fundraiser season come round and the mention of some sort of bookkeeping solution in the spiel, I'm a little curious about what the stopgap measure is and what you'd like to end up with (a full-blown ERP system, Quickbooks licenses, support contract for some open-source solution, etc). I assume you've something a little more sophisticated than a folder with a .csv file for each ledger or journal. I mean, worst comes to worst, you could always just make a whole bunch of wiki pages for each one, extensively abuse transcludes and inline math to make double-entry transactions show up in the appropriate places, and please for the love of god say it's not that bad. AntiDeathPill (talk) 02:31, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
- The stopgap measure is a copy of Quicken that Trent has.
- If I could have anything, I'd pick Quickbooks Enterprise, which has the ideal trifecta of ubiquity (Quickbooks is monstrously popular, meaning there's a ton of advice and trouble-shooting resources available, plus it plays nicely with practically any small business software out there), customizability (templates and a ton of add-ons), and easy access via the cloud (what if my PC breaks? What if my laptop is stolen? No problem, it's all online anyways). Unfortunately, the cheapest version of it runs $1,000 a year, which breaks our budget.
- That being the case, I'm currently torn between a single license of Quickbooks for Nonprofits ($400) and the cloud-based Aplos ($29 a month for all the features we'd need). Of course, Trent's been using Quicken, and the only thing it can export to is Quickbooks, so I guess my choice is already made for me. But I'll be damned if Aplos doesn't appeal to me anyways.
- (And... using MediaWiki for accounting? That sounds frightening. The poor man's accounting software is the same as the poor man's database software: Excel. You can do it that way if you really want to, it's just you totally shouldn't :-) ) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 03:52, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'd rather get stuck with GnuMoney than Excel. In any case, it looks like Aplos supports automatically importing Quickbooks and they seem eager to arrange importing anything else. With the fifteen day trial including support, I'd encourage at least giving it a try if it's something you think you'd like to use. (Also, good luck with Intuit support.) Concerning the manufactroversies section -- is it possible to have a list of articles that can be selected from for the template without making a separate category for them? Also, I'm going to add a section for denialists. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 01:01, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Damned if I know. Often, when I need to auto-populate a list, I check Wikimedia's page on DPL, and half the time end up typing it out by hand. And you don't have to ask my permission for changing the the navbar. I intended it to be a starter for others to improve as they saw fit. Edit away! Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 02:24, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Okay. Another thing: Should we recategorize climate deniers under just "category:Global warming denialists" or both that and the more general "category:Denialists." I feel like the former might be better in a lot of cases because so many climate deniers tend to be deniers of other environmental problems." Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 02:42, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
Non-materialist neurosci derail[edit]
That was an ad-hoc analogy. What you are thinking of is the "computer metaphor," i.e. the mind is the "software" that is run by the "hardware" of the brain. This is something separate from non-materialist neuroscience, which is an attempt to shoehorn god and/or magic into neuroscience. The metaphor can, however, lead to the sort of implicit dualism that transhumanist mind uploading schemes seem to endorse. (Some are more explicit about their dualism.) The metaphor should also not be confused with computational theory of mind. Hope that doesn't make things even more confusing. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 17:11, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- That's nuance, and nuance is never confusing! :-)
- Yeah, I was just being nitpicky because I dislike the hardware/software analogy so much. As you said, and I agree, it can lead to the ever-grating transhumanist version of dualism. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 17:30, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think it is useful in a way to demonstrate the concept of category mistakes or levels of description -- just as software exists without the need to explain it by means of physical "software-stuff," minds can exist without physical "mind-stuff." However, the disanalogies are numerous enough to be incredibly misleading. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 17:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

UK vs. US convention on punctuation inside or outside quotation marks[edit]
So you told me to check the rest of the page on Eric S. Raymond.
The thing is, look at this version of it before you started your edits: http://rationalwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Eric_S._Raymond&curid=15376&diff=1226819&oldid=1216245
Most (I think all, but I might not have caught everything) of the periods and commas are outside the quotation marks as far as I can tell (correct me on this if I'm wrong). Then you started switching over everything to the US convention (again, correct me on this if I'm wrong). My question is: Why?
I remember reading somewhere here that RW doesn't care which convention you use as long as the page is consistent. I don't care enough about these inane grammar issues to dispute you on this, but ... well ... my OCD was bruised, so I felt like telling you ... or something like that. :P Nullahnung (talk) 06:31, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
- I always interpreted that advisory as applying to word spellings only, because when I started out here most of the articles I saw used periods and commas inside quotations, so that's what I learned to use. Commas and periods outside seemed to be the exception. But memory is fungible, so I wouldn't take my word for it. :-) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 06:49, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, that's quite alright. I always try to err on the side of convention. I do find it hard to do in this case, since I was raised on European grammar and have been fighting my overbearing OCD for all of my life (quotation marks should only contain the quoted material itself, damnit!, everything else is impure, I will preach the gospel of my own grammar, etc. etc.). But yeah, just don't expect articles I write to use the US convention from the get-go, but I'll yield to everybody else, when they start editing. Nullahnung (talk) 06:57, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
- I can certainly empathize with your OCD, thought I've learned to minimize my participation in internecine content fights. If somebody else really wants to force something, I try to yield early. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 07:06, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome Misanthrope[edit]
Hi Misanthrope, thank you for the welcome.
I have a question, how do I go about renaming an article? I think the name of the article in itself causes bias and chastises academics who have dissenting views on a subject.
Thank you once again for this wonderful website. I thoroughly enjoy it and love all the articles. Anthrax (talk) 03:39, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

- Thanks but it seems User:Osaka Sun has abused his sysop powers and continues to remove 7500 characters of cited information just because he doesn't agree with the facts. He seems content to do this without typing anything in the Talk Page, and then trollishly asking strange questions like "what does fish cost?" And writing things like "Shut up, get out." in the edit-summary. Then he removed it again and protected the page. Adding a picture of a graphical map that Armenians have fabricated without any evidence and in the caption he wrote "Nope, not a genocide!" in a sarcastic tone. And even wrote at the top "didn't intend to exterminate the Armenians, so it can't be called a "genocide."" claiming this as a bad argument despite intent being the well-establish international law in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article II. This user is clearly abusing his powers and being extremely hostile to me because he knows he cannot dispute the facts that I cited. I need your help in settling this dispute in a civilized manner instead of simply destroying what I spent time writing without cause just because this user has a history of contributions to this website. This is actually a VPN IP for Feral Hosting's thanatos server, I'm sure several people use it. Just fyi, since I saw your talk msg about editing something that I did not personally edit. — Unsigned, by: 185.21.216.158 / talk / contribs 2013-09-09T16:15:21
- Really? Dang. Oh, well. No harm in asking whoever's using it at any given time to join, anyway. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 23:21, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Anti-economics economics[edit]
Seeing Keen and Graeber mentioned made me think of Michael Perelman's The Invention of Capitalism. Somewhat Graeber-ish, but more old-school Marxist. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 19:26, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. You're like a suggested reading machine!
- I'm not a Marxist, but I have a soft spot for books critiquing capitalism and neoliberal economics. (An aside: labor historian Erik Loomis has lamented the death of labor rights history in the classroom, but expressed hope at the growing amount of material available on the history and development of capitalism, since so much of it is critical of conventional narratives.) - In that vein, I usually recommend the behavioral econ stuff that seeks to undermine rational choice theory (Simon, Kahneman, Shiller, Thaler, etc.), but I figured you already knew about that.
- I never took labor history, but I did take a course ("industrialization in America" or something like that) that drew on it pretty heavily. It did make me want to send people who whine about "class warfare" back in time to when there was real class warfare. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 01:23, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- I almost forgot -- Perelman has a blog with some excerpts and other material. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 18:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

- Oh. What kind of stuff do you intend on doing? Recently I moved from my cosy little urban apartment to an unnecessarily large house that's two hours away from pretty much everything. But otherwise, I'm doing pretty well. Messiah of Doom- Unite with thy Oracle (talk) 23:50, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

About that RMF/Discovery Institute merger[edit]
The government shutdown caused this to be delayed, since the government's regulators were on furlough. Reckless Noise Symphony (talk) 08:59, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
- I can see why the Justice Department and FTC would move to block it. A merger of two powerhouses like RW and the Disco 'Tute would allow us to corner the internet market! Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 09:13, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Refs[edit]
Hi :-) It's been awhile - how are you doing? Do you have any new fanfiction? I need to ask for help, and you are probably one of the nicer ppl here... so I think I can safely ask for help. (I'm just not in the mood for snarky or mean spirited replies, I'm so sensitive, lol. :p) Can you tell me please.. how can I add a book source as a reference? Also, is it better to put a link, or comment on what the link is? I see sometimes there is a "reflist" and sometimes just refs.. when do you use reflist and what does it do? I don't want to read a lot of instructions on stuff I'm not planning to do, just want to know about these couple of things, so I'm hoping you can explain these few points for me? (It's ok to email me instead of post here if you want, you have my addy). Thanks! Refugeetalk page 19:59, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi again, I already figured out the question about refs, so nevermind! Take care, Refugeetalk page 00:32, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
