Hi![edit]
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for the welcoming message, and to suggest that the reason you don't like alcohol is that you have never tried any of my home brew. I hope this works..... FriendlyScientist (talk) 09:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Radical activity in San Francisco[edit]
Re: your recent remarks about how radicalism has largely vanished from the San Francisco scene, we are informed by way of The Observer that the radicals in that area disrespectfully disagree. They have recently been raising such a ruckus that it is now getting coverage outside of the pinko press (which started reporting on it as soon as it started) — blocking the movement of buses, smashing windows, and employing Redwatch-style tactics against a particular local who is doing work of which they disapprove. ListenerXTalkerX 05:08, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- A single smashed window does not equal a hotbed radicalism, anymore than the recent theft of my parents' care makes their town a hotbed of crime. (And in the very least I remain half right.) (Also, housing would be affordable if the NIMBYs fucking shut up and allowed mid-rise apartments instead of mandating single-family low-rise houses everywhere. But NOOO MY PRECIOUS SINGLE-STORY BUNGALOWS.) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 05:58, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- But it is not "a single smashed window;" it is a campaign of sufficient size to make the media and politicians sit up and pay attention.
- And at the very least I remain half right. I did not at any time dispute your economic assessment of the San Francisco area — the tech boom there being, after all, one cause of these protest actions — but are you implying that it is impossible for a city to be a hotbed of radicalism and an economic power-house? ListenerXTalkerX 06:24, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Not at all. But I dispute that this is "radicalism" in any meaningful sense. There's nothing radical about general resentment and protests against something, even if it gets in the papers. Their message and goals are about as radical as an AARP pamphlet. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 15:37, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- An interesting assertion. Let us examine the message and goals of the protesters in question:
- The anarchists who used the Redwatch tactics were advancing the message that their target was furthering the demonic agenda of the Big Nasty Corporate-Military Complex by developing technology that could, in some hypothetical future scenario, be used by the army; they set out goals involving petty theft, smashy-smashy, revolution, etc.
- The group responsible for smashing the bus window put forth a manifesto expressing the goal of fighting against the capitalist system, which they believe is to blame if, i.a., your landlord neglects to repair your toilet.
- Even the ringleader quoted in The Observer (who, being on the moderate end of the movement, naturally does not condone the aggressive flyers), has put forth a personal message to the effect that thought is now obligatory on account of the oppressions of capitalist imperialism.
- This ringleader's protest organization, the "Heart of the City Collective," was concerned that their actions and message were being taken out of context by the press. Certainly The Observer did not disclose the reasons why the organization is tilting against gentrification, but the organization has helpfully clarified their position; after lambasting Google for being so sick as to maintain that "capitalistic" and "not evil" belong in the same sentence, they stated that their goal involves "stopping capitalist exploitation in its tracks."
- I was under the impression that the AARP's goals ran more toward opposing single-payer health care than deconstructing systems of dispossession in postcolonial and postnational contexts. ListenerXTalkerX 07:24, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- Amusing as their fretting about "war robots" is, I find it hard to get as worked up about "radicalism" as you are. We're not in the Soviet Union, we don't have a gulag. This stuff is no crazier than my local alternative paper and no more damaging than a football riot. Talk is cheap, and so are windows. Call me when the beheadings actually start. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 13:10, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- I strongly suspect that you would be whistling a different tune if these radicals were on the opposite end of the spectrum and smashing your windows. Those things cost hundreds of dollars apiece.
- It does not do at all to ignore radicals until heads begin to roll. Radicals are much more successful when people ignore them than when those of cooler temperament listen to them and address any legitimate issues that they raise, thus isolating them from any broad support and leaving them to rant and rave to themselves about the rottenness of the Big Evil System. Thank you for the kind welcome! I don't like coffee or alcohol either, and don't actively seek out to consume dark chocolate, but if you ever manage to somehow end up in Vienna, you should try a piece of original Sacher Torte, which is an awesome cocao cake with dark chocolate icing: link Bismarck (talk) 19:20, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

- A certain dryness is to be expected, since this is not a cream cake, but "dry as fuck" would be an overstatement. The obligatory dash of whipped cream usually serves to alleviate the occasional dryness. Some variations of the recipe aren't dry at all. Bismarck (talk) 11:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
- Meh, I guess. By the way, I know you don't like alcohol, but you totally need to try this awesome Portuguese liquor called Ginja. It's made out of cherries, and is popular in a few little villages, like Obidòs. It's beautiful and rich- bit the best part is that it's served in these little dark chocolate cups. So, yeah, just try it. Impurity is the secret Unite with thy oracle 12:09, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

First world problems[edit]
I restored it. This was an article requested by another user, and I really don't think my text strays all that far from the definitions I've found so far. This is a wiki, and I expect that any text I add to mainspace will be edited by people with other opinions; if what I've written in that little stub is that wrong, be my guest. Go ahead and propose it for deletion if you will; we now have a ritual for that, even. I do think it ought to merit some discussion, at minimum. - Smerdis of Tlön (talk) 05:14, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, gone are the days of unilateral deletions... I'll let it be.
- I would remind you, however, that practically anyone can add to the suggested articles list. Just because it's on there doesn't mean we should have it, and citing it is a poor defense. Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 05:50, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Speaking about grammar... I took a long time arguing with someone (see the talk page for his/her user page and the edit history for black belt magazine) because I wanted to have my preferred version "a number of are" as opposed to his/her preferred "a number of is", and I gave in in the end. - Or something, yes. It's weird, I decided about a year ago that I really love math and was ranting to a friend of mine about how, back in the day, I used to hear kids say in high school, "When am I ever going to use this?" That led to me saying that I do things like trigonometry, algebra and calculus so damn often that I can do them in my head, Which lead, in turn, to my friend saying, "Then why don't you have a degree in math??" This made me decide that, since I need a Master's degree anyways, that a good place to pursue one would be in math. Thus, we reach that as a destination. - Yeah, David Gerard shared that link with me. When they emailed me I turned them down as gently as a could. The purpose of the RationalMedia Foundation is not to partner with or promote alternative currencies. Also, opening a Feathercoin account, then registering with CoinMkt just to exchange it for useful currency is a lot of hoops to jump through for a donation.
- I was briefly tempted by the idea of accepting whatever cryptocurrencies people feel like throwing at us, so I could treat them like penny stocks and get practical experience with stock accounting (ooh, I could create an index fund of cryptocurrencies! Why invest in one fad when you can invest in an average of several fads? :-) ). But I dismissed the idea because it'd be extraordinarily inappropriate to treat Foundation assets like my own personal play money pile. Just thought I'd say goodbye to you, as you were nice in greeting me. You were right about this place being melodramatic. I don't suppose you would be willing to revert Watcher in the Dark's and Weasaloid's reversions of some of my edits? Not all of it's from Wikipedia, and a simple wpa would suffice, I did do some basic rewording like in an English paper. It's difficult coming up with a new way to describe how the big bang worked when every other word has to be a technical detail.
Thanks again, there's a chicken coop discussion if you'd be kind enough to defend me in my hour of need, you're under no obligation to do so. Exiled Encyclopedist (talk) 15:29, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
A couple of questions about this whole Brx thing[edit]
I know it's not really any of my business, and I really don't care all that much, but I do have a couple of questions out of curiosity. When the new Board comes in, if they say "nope unblock Brx", would they have the authority to do so? Additionally, would it not make sense, both for the sake of maintaining this, and also for Brx himself, to block his socks? Like, I mean, if block evasion is verboten, it would kinda make sense to get rid of his means of doing so, but anyway. Finally, would it be counted as evasion if he communicated with another user via email or something, who then goes to communicate the message on the wiki? I mean, I highly doubt it, but just checking. Anyway, sorry to bother you. Not JAQing off, just legitimately curious. THE GREAT RIGHTEØUS DESTRØYER Dark seas of endless pain… 06:07, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
- Like, you get ignored because, like, I mean, you sound like a 14 year old stoner. It doesn't help that you "really don't care all that much". How very respectful. Brxbrx's block was supported by the board, but was not a board decision. People here conflate the board with the corporation for some reason. I suppose a new board could intervene but it's not in the nature of what directors do. Their responsibility is generally to supervise the officers, who handle the operations. You could have looked, but you "really don't care all that much". If Brxbrx attempts to use sockpuppets we're aware of, we'll block them and extend the block on his main account by incrementally longer and longer amounts. Emails? Brxbrx has been sending dozens and dozens of them. The ones I've seen are so pathetic they made me sad. You relaying a message is on you, not him, but you "really don't care all that much" anyway so why bother.Nutty Roux (talk) 15:03, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

A footnote section longer than the main article? That deserves some sort of award! Still, it's much improved. MarmotHead (talk) 22:19, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you! But I think my habit of including a quote of the relevant lines from a reference is starting to overwhelm things. It's okay for single sentences, but I'm quoting one to two-paragraph chunks. It makes the footnotes look gigantic and unpleasant to read.
- I do it because I think it's nice to be able to immediately see the relevant part of a reference. It's not always fun skimming a 20-page PDF trying to find why, exactly, the previous editor thought it was worth including. Unfortunately, quoting relevant parts fails when the reference itself is comprehensive enough that you can cite it multiple times across different sections. David Gerard and TiaC's are edit civil warring over slavery[edit]
It's more than just an edit war at this point, Gerards been white washing Ryulongs Wikipedia page as well. To be honest I don't think there's enough unless Annonymous can find a clean version of Ryulongs wikipedia talk page. David Gerard also seems to doubt that the importance of understanding genetic engineering, and basically anything I do anymore. By clean I mean where he calls he a fucktard and it magically vanishes from the history; there looked to be someone who knew Ryulong who might be willing to talk, or hasn't had their contribution to Ryulongs page deleted from their user contributions yet. I doubt it, I'm not sure what anonymous could do but I know Dramatica hates David Gerard and would gladly help out just to see him out of power. I avoided writing for them for a reason, but they seem to be the closest thing to a hope I have, which is really sad. - Because if you're going to be doing that, I suggest citing this essay which cites an unspecified "old guard" back in 2007! Definitely compelling evidence for unfair persecution of old timers :-) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 09:41, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- Search function? You can do that? I've been doing this by hand and going through a fuckload of various pages. And that's before the screencaps that I have are uploaded. No fair cheating with this "search function." Reckless Noise Symphony (talk) 09:43, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

- Wait, you have screencaps?
- ...Oh my God, you've become me when I still bore my silly grudge against Human. Let me tell you, as someone who's been there: continuing this will only lead to pitiful displays of petty butthurt. I recommend signing out, purging all RW-related material from your computer, taking a break for several months, and getting the fuck over yourself. It's what I did, and it worked wonders. Are you a fan of the metric system?[edit]
I ask because, for some reason, every time this song comes up on my stereo, I for some goddamn reason put your face to the person singing it. Therefore, if you are a fan of the metric system, I hope you're flattered by my choice in a theme song for you. If you are a fan of the British Imperial System, then I hope I haven't offended you. And if you don't actually care one way or the other, then I just hope I pointed you to a pretty cool band. - Gabe Gooniepunk (talk) 07:04, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
- I am a fan of the metric, but alas, I was raised American, and therefore visualize everything in imperial units. I'm touched by the thoughtful music rec, though! (Although don't like punk much—which I know is sacrilege to a man like you.) Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 17:05, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
