A sandbox is a Wiki page (usually a user page) where you are free to edit to experiment, explore the wonders of wiki formatting, and to work on drafts of articles.
Global sandbox[edit]
There is a public sandbox at RationalWiki:Sandbox, which everybody can edit. It's fine for trying out things quickly, but no use if you want to save your work, as it can be edited by someone else at any moment.
User sandbox[edit]
Everybody can create their own sandbox in their own user space. You can create it at User:yourname/Sandbox. You can have subpages of them, too. If you want to create a sandbox (or any other user page of your choice) right now, type
