Am I the Asshole? April 2023 Edition

@Bongolian @Flandres @LeftyGreenMario @Spud @GeeJayK

I'm not sure if any of y'all have read any of this mess on the Saloon Bar, but I am starting to get mildly irritated by the whole thing. To recap, RationalZombie brought up the whole "groomer" conspiracy that is common amongst the Right these days. My argument was that, while most of the Right are reactionary assholes, stopped clocks and all and sometimes there really are Bad Things that should not be supported. Can you guys weigh in on whether I should just back off from the conversation entirely, if I'm too close to crossing a line (or have already done so), etc? Because I don't want to make things more toxic than necessary. CorruptUser 20:42, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Well, for the record, I didn't read the entire discussion (hardly ever read anything on the bar nowadays), but unlike your dispute with GC that time, I don't think this one should be on ATIM. Bringing it to this page feels like you're looking for validation from other mods. I will read entire the discussion if you think it is important, but for now, I think you should resolve your own disputes with regular users alone. I'd also like to see some diffs that you consider important before posting an opinion on the bar thread. I know this isn't the answer you wanted, but this is all I have to say for now. Like GJK said, point to something specific in the conversation. The saloon is for more-or-less open conversations as long as they remain civil. Bongolian (talk) 23:06, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
(EC) Could you provide excerpts of the conversation you think are especially... "out of control" so we can decide what we can do as mods?-Flandres (talk) 23:09, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
Cory: Of course you should back off of that conversation. What do you hope to gain by it? I hate to say it but you appear to be captured by the ideology that persuades you that if you reason with strangers long enough they must eventually come to agree with you. You would make conversations extinguish themselves naturally if you recognize when you are unlikely to make progress. Imagine the situation you would find yourself in if everyone here were a pedophile! You'd be in the dog house then son. As it is no one really knows who the pedophiles here are, if there are any, of course.
Not being what you might call an authority here, and to some extent, being a trespasser of sorts by sharing my thoughts here, I would only justify this transgression against the good opinion of the moderator class by offering to you that none of that bunch really wants to be put on the record about anything related to your saloon conversation that so very much resembled a kind of Pekingese fire drill on the old Ed Sullivan Show. You knew what they were doing, just not why they were doing it. So, take my advice, crack a cold one, stay off the saloon tonight, and drop this here conversation as well.UncleKrampus (talk) 23:16, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
I linked to that video of the 13 year old boy dancing sexually in front of adult men that was going around the intertubes a couple weeks back (assuming the video isn't staged), to which OSD implied that seeing that dance as sexual means I'm sexually attracted to kids, and OSD later goes on to outright justify the sexual dancing because culture or something. I can't tell if I'm just annoyed at the accusation of being a pedophile or there really is something for me to be angry about. CorruptUser 23:18, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm honestly still not sure about the "13 year old boy" or "drag" aspect personally and I'm still a bit puzzled the fact that a Libs of TikTok video was taken seriously. Wikipedia does have an article on vogue dancingWikipedia and based on the first video I came across on Youtube that indeed does seem what it is. It is popular in African-American and Latin-American queer communities, per the Wiki, yes. So actually thanks to OSD for the nudge, that was helpful for the understanding. :) It's not really drag (I guess tangentially a little bit, but not really) so strike 1 for clickbait Twitter accounts.
Vogue dance that I can Google is available for all ages (thanks to Madonna, I'm sure), but the vogue dance competitions for kids don't have the leather, it's just cutesy dance outfits as far as I can see. "Lifestyle" events (like the "latex ball" Youtube I linked to) usually are 18+ or 21+, and with the leather this looks in that vein. So while the Libs of Tiktok video performer "looks young", as noted I couldn't rule out categories like "petite of age", and since vogue dances seem to be open to all types (not just drag queens), I still can't. It's one of those things where one should "get the whole story" before getting outraged, that's pretty much a rule of thumb for the entire shithole of social media (no matter the creed, the liberal Reddit r/all outrage is just as shitty as Boomer Trumpy Facebook outrage). The whole "13 year old boy" thing could be a PIDOOMA. BobJohnson (talk) 00:38, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
This discussion should be closed in ATIM. Continue in the Saloon if necessary. Bongolian (talk) 01:01, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Yeah I fail to see what relevance or reason this is in moderation. Acei9 01:50, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
