What is the purpose of this site?[edit]

I just go from wiki to wiki promoting the Barney Bunch and Drew Pickles videos on Youtube (except for Uncyclopedia, Conservapedia, and Encyclopedia Dramatica, because i tried them already and I ended up blocked)— Unsigned, by: BarneyBot / talk / contribs

A worthy ambition no doubt, but perhaps one that you should not attempt to further here. Our purpose here at RationalWiki includes the following:
  • Analyzing and refuting the anti-science movement.
  • Analyzing and refuting the full range of crank ideas.
  • Explorations of authoritarianism and fundamentalism.

We welcome contributors, and we encourage those who disagree with us to register and engage in a constructive dialogue. I'm afraid your remarkable contribution didn't really seem to further these goals. Nevertheless you may find something of interest here. Some of our articles are believed to even be funny.  :-) --Bobbing up 10:43, 27 June 2008 (EDT)

Those cool images on userpages[edit]

Hey BobM could you please let me know how to put those template type things on my user page. You know those "this user is an atheist" etc type little images. I'm a bit of a novice and would like to put some on my user page --Damo2353 06:36, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

I think that little kitten-related diversion has established that it's a bot. Since it isn't targeting any other articles, I think we ought to protect it. If there are any anonymous editors who really want to improve it, surely they will register an account when they find it's protected? 13:21, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Could be. My position on protection has changed from strongly opposed to generally opposed. Th unsure.gif Let's see what the night crew thinks. (Or the day crew, depending on your time zone.) It's hardly destroying the Wiki at the moment. --Bobbing up 13:34, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Where is an index? Q1 - Q9[edit]

Bob, when you have time for questions from the NewGuy, i'll be ready, appreciative, and waiting. (RAW on RW.)

Q1) Where is an index? Not a TOC, but an index of RW members, say. To find somebody i converse with previously, i have to try to remember where he posted, then follow his link. Is that how everybody else does it?

Goto Special:Specialpages for much of the answer to your question. Special:Listusers is all the editors. Godot 13:49, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
"is that how..." - yes SusanG  ContribsTalk 14:07, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q2) Is the following a suggested scenario? On User:Rembrandt.ryan i put links to other places followed by an "All About Me" section, followed by a "Personal Opinions" section.

You can put anything on your User Page. SusanG  ContribsTalk 14:07, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
If that's how you want to do it, sure.--Bobbing up 14:50, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q3) Is there someplace to click that will show me which of the pages i'm interested in that contain new comments? And maybe even direct me to those comments?

Goto a page & click "Observe" at the top. The page will be added to "my watchlist"" at the very top. Godot 13:49, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q4) Is there some kind of an API members have access to? Actually I don't understand this one. I hope Linus' response helped. Or do you mean the forum? You can click it on the left.--Bobbing up 14:50, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q5) Onto which page do members typically login? I've been linking directly to the Libertarianism article page, but there may be a page that greets me with new information.

Special:Recentchanges— Unsigned, by: Godot / talk / contribs

Q6) Is there a Hottest topics list?

See above. SusanG  ContribsTalk 14:04, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q7) Is there a Talk about anything/everything page?

People tend to use Talk:Main Page but just start something on your own talk page & people will notice. SusanG  ContribsTalk 14:04, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
Yes, if it's important and about the Wiki or the world the Mainpage. If it's more about you then your talk page.--Bobbing up 14:50, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Q8) Are any HTML tags verboten on WR?

some don't work SusanG  ContribsTalk

Dancing Girls and Languages[edit]

Q9) Where can i find some easy Spanish readings on the web? No lo entiendo mucho. That should give you a clue what level i'm at. (Does any Spaniard utter such a sentence?)

? SusanG  ContribsTalk 14:04, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
I guess you ask this because I live in Spain. Thing is that I don't teach Spanish, so I can't really help you. There are Spanish learning sites, but I don't use them. I would say "No entiendo mucho." but Spanish can catch you out with that sort of trick and I speak Peninsular Spanish - South American Spanish does a few things differently. But, no, I don't have any sites to hand.--Bobbing up 14:50, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Rem 15:52, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Sorry, but I don't know any Spanish dancing girls - and I rather think my wife would take a dim view of it if I did. Ohmy.gif. On the other hand learning English is never-ending, long-term goal for many people in Spain so if you're a fluent native English speaker with a reasonable personality you can usually find people who are eager to talk to you. But I rather think that the Atlantic ocean might be a bit of a problem for you.--Bobbing up 16:02, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

// Sorry, but I don't know any Spanish dancing girls

C'mon -- a sly hounddog like yourself?

She'd take a dim view? Possesive type, eh? Just explain to her that times have changed, and she can't really maintain a medieval attitude in this day and age, she has to be reasonable, and that a little dalliance would actually strengthen your relationship -- plus she'd have something to tell the other ladies when she gets together for an espresso (or whatever the Spanish equivalent is) ... but i'm ha-ha only kidding ho-ho, my wife is also a throwback.

So while they're trying to get good at English, we're scrambling to learn Spanish -- English will probably be a dead language over here in five or ten years. (And don't even THINK about quoting a GB Shaw wisecrack.)

// English speaker with a reasonable personality

Dang! Knocked out right in the first round. RemBeau 20:53, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Question of Dire Importance[edit]

Or not. :-) do you know how to find 1) a list of all pages here, and 2) a list of templates? I'm being "redlink" gal, and changing bad/missing links, but I'm concerned that there might be really good pages here that would be a valid link. That is, if i see "Hoax" as an empty link, i can try "hoax" in the search engine, but I don't know if there might be something related such as "Scientific Frauds" or "internet deceit" that would be good links for "hoax". As for the templates, it has been suggested by Human that there might once long ago have been a template to help remove "redlinks" from pages imported into RatWik from CP. Any help you have would be appreciated. by teh way, I've looked and looked and don't see a very suitable place for such questions as these. The "help page" is only as useful as the current links. Thanks again, Kip. --WaitingforGodot 16:04, 11 July 2008 (EDT)

Click on "special pages" off to the left. There should be a link to "all articles" or some such, it will also have a dropdown allowing you to specify a namespace (like template). Also, under "help", there should be a link to a sort-of guide to our templates and what they do. That "red link" one I mentioned might very well be in the guide. ħumanUser talk:Human 16:57, 11 July 2008 (EDT)
For a list of all pages (and other interesting pages as well) Go to the "Toolbox" and click on "special pages". (The toolbox is located below the navigation box, which in turn is below the RW logo on the left hand side.)
The first item in "Special Pages" is "All pages" which you can display by namespace. Look in mainspace first. Though I must say that visually searching might not be very quick. I don't remember any such template for removing red links, I'm afraid.
I think this really is the sort of question that you need to ask a human about, but most of us are quite friendly so don't be afraid to ask.  :-)--Bobbing up 17:00, 11 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks. I did find the guide to the templates, in a very technical sense that went way over this woman's head. I was hoping to just find a list of pre-made templates, and not "how to make them". I'm guessing I was looking in the wrong place. As for the list of pages, thanks. I know it's likely to be very long, but I can't help but feel there are many articles that are similar to a missing link, but not identical.— Unsigned, by: WaitingforGodot / talk / contribs

I have just returned from a week in The Highlands climbing mountains and feal far more mentally stable. Sock it up[edit]

What would be the purpose of a sock? Why would anybody want one? To hide from a girlfriend, perhaps? -- RemBeau 14:44, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

There are many reasons one might want a sock. All of them are very evil. Basically if you want a second identity for whatever reason you can create a sock. Here on RW they are usually created as jokes. On other sites they may have more sinister aims.--Bobbing up 14:56, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

It is very carefully laid out in the Zeitgeist of RationalWiki. tmtoulouse provoke 15:09, 13 July 2008 (EDT)
Silly of me, yes, I should have looked it up in the Rationalwiki:Zeitgeist. Actually that would be a hell of a name for an article.--Bobbing up 15:14, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

At some sites they are banned? What would prevent someone from simply setting up a new login identity? -- RemBeau 15:43, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

First off, when an administer blocks an account he can block either the name or the name and IP. If he only blocks the Name then the user can create another sock. If he blocks both then another account cannot be created. So the User needs a new IP. After that an admin could go for the "look and feel" of a user. If say an IP is blocked and then the user gets a proxy IP to evade the ban and then starts to do the same things the blocked user did then an admin may say it is the blocked user. It all gets quite cat and mouse. Some people dedicate their lives to it. There's a big article on it here somewhere if you're interested I'll look it up for you.--Bobbing up 15:50, 13 July 2008 (EDT)
One "legitimate" reason for a sockpuppet to is to work on parts of a project one does not want closely associated with an established username, somewhat like the reason academics use pseudonyms (or at least, self-publish) when working on something "frivolous". ħumanUser talk:Human 16:55, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

Deletion procedure[edit]

May I ask what the procedure for deletions is on this wiki project? Thanks. Credulous 20:58, 17 July 2008 (EDT)

It's pretty informal, as are most of our rigid policies. The best thing to do is bring it up on the article's talk page. Was there something you felt should be removed? ħumanUser talk:Human 21:27, 17 July 2008 (EDT)
I am still not totally clear about much of the reasons for some content on the site, but some seems really strange such as Danish. When I run into such things that just seem really out of place I was wondering what I might mark them with for others to review that are more familiar with site policy. Credulous 21:31, 17 July 2008 (EDT)
First, thanks for asking. Second, we barely have "site policy", but we do have some RationalWiki:Community Standards. I think we have some "guidelines", too, but I can't find them right now ;). While we have our "mission" as stated on the main page, a large adjunct to it is to have fun here, and build a wiki that is not just dry and serious. You might want to ask around, since this is a mobocracy. As far as articles you aren't sure should survive, as I said, bring it up on their talk page, and see who chimes in. ħumanUser talk:Human 21:37, 17 July 2008 (EDT)
In fact, you'll notice that I added "fun?" to the talk page at Danish - that's shorthand for "shall we move this to the fun: namespace", which is usually where the sillier things end up. ħumanUser talk:Human 21:40, 17 July 2008 (EDT)
(ec)There's an awful lot of in jokes like Danish. We don't have a policy. If you think something needs deleting stick the {{delete}}template on it & explain on its talk page. We generally move stuff to Fun namespace rather than delete. SusanG  ContribsTalk 21:43, 17 July 2008 (EDT)

The article is here. But a lot of their stuff is free to view anyway, can you tell me if you can see all of it before I start cutting and pasting?--Bobbing up 12:42, 18 July 2008 (EDT)
The bit you're after would seem to be: "The origin of this programme was not in science or research by any means, but in an ultra-conservative, ultra-religious ideology," says James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a non-profit organisation in Washington DC that champions informed decision-making about sexual behaviour. "You could almost see the abstinence-only movement as the sexual health equivalent of creationism."--Bobbing up 12:45, 18 July 2008 (EDT)

However, I notice now that the Achristian article doesn't really mention this, so I guess the example works. I still think it's just a sneaky way of saying "look how nasty religion is", though :P New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 07:28, 26 September 2008 (EDT)

Why do you always type out your comment into the edit summary? (It must get boring with some of the longer ones...) New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 15:17, 26 September 2008 (EDT)

I am being a good soldier and following the site guidelines here: Help:Edit summary. I cut and past the most relevant part of the edit into the comment line so that people can have an idea of what is going on.--Bobbing up 15:30, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
But it's always slightly disappointing to see your entry on Recent Changes and then load up the page only to find there's nothing further beyond what I already read :(
You should make it more mysterious! Use sentence fragments! Type in Greek! New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 15:37, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
I'm just following orders mate. More than my jobs worth to do it different guv. But I think that's the idea of edit comments isn't it? Then people only need to actually look at your fine prose if they think they are going to need to respond to it. Frankly, I'm surprised more people don't do it. Cutting and pasting the most relevant line into the edit summary takes something in the order of a quarter of a second.--Bobbing up 15:42, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
Damn, I just wasted 1/4 of a second. you and my husband would get along wondefully well. Mowses. Or miwce, if you prefer. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 06:19, 27 September 2008 (EDT)
Actually a number of British animals have no plurals. One sheep two sheep; one fish two fish; one deer two deer. So why not: one mowse two mowse?--Bobbing up 07:02, 27 September 2008 (EDT)
That's perfect! However, I'm not sure it'll catch on. It'll be difficult for people to pick up the fact that it's the plural and not just a typo, you see. I might use all three (and why not?) New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 18:00, 27 September 2008 (EDT)

You realize that the "welcome" template includes a link tot he nuke-ummers guide, right? Not that there's anything wrong with adding a personal touch and link ;) ħumanUser talk:Human 00:41, 14 November 2008 (EST)

Yes, I agree it does. It's just that I suspect that most people will think the template is "just a template". Furthermore, the things that really make us different are in the guide but it doesn't really stand out in the template itself. So when I welcome people I like to make an additional reference to it in my message.
I had thought of reconstructing the welcome template to make the guide more prominent, but as the template is owned by the community I decided against messing with it too much. Also as I wrote most of the guide I didn't want to look as though I was insisting that the whole site gave my ideas priority. I concluded that the best was forward was to try to be quick off the mark with welcoming people and make sure that I gave the guide a bit of special attention in my welcome.--Bobbing up 03:17, 14 November 2008 (EST)
Ah, I see. That makes sense, thanks! ħumanUser talk:Human 20:06, 16 November 2008 (EST)

Hi Bob. Thanks for the warm welcome! Im not certain what you mean by "controversial edits." The two edits Ive done thus far certainly relate to controversial subjects, but I fail to see how the edits themselves could be considered controversial. The first dealt with simply destroying a false assertion about what was in the Bible. I did this through deeply researching the subject; I actually read the passage it quoted. Its previous interpretation was clearly incorrect in that it contradicted a clear reading of what the passage{s) stated. The second edit dealt simply with adding certain detail to one side of the abortion debate. My inspiration for doing this was complicated; I saw the right side to be full to the brim, while the left side was almost empty by comparison. Into this empty section I added a concept (and some logic behind it) for sake of clarify, explanation, and reasonability. That's all I did. Again, thanks for the welcome, and I will no doubt be talking with you again. :) -Zahd 14:31, 23 November 2008 (EST)

OK, I saw that you were editing controversial articles and thought that your edits might be (or become) controversial. with regard to your strikeout, that is not how it's done here. You should either raise the issue on the talk page pointing out why it's wrong, or you edit the article to correct it and cut the erroneous information to talk with an explanation. As you're new here I would recommend the first option initially. If nobody responds within a day or so just do the edit you feel appropriate with a note saying you raised it on talk. But please don't just do a strikeout - it will be meaningless to those who come later.--Bobbing up 14:38, 23 November 2008 (EST)
Got it. Thanks. Will follow. -Zahd 15:31, 23 November 2008 (EST)

Most of the important stuff in on RationalWiki:Newcomers' guide. If you follow that you shouldn't have any big problems. If you show that you're here to join in and build the site then I'm sue that you'll have no problems. I don't think that we're that frightening, but if you want to start carefully then: try to make sure that your first post isn't controversial; if you're reluctant to jump into articles then edit article talk pages or people's talk pages - many people like to see edits on their talk pages. Put something on your user page telling people something about yourself as soon as you can. Hope that helps.--Bobbing up 03:43, 19 December 2008 (EST)

I agree.
While we are on the topic of renaming, since you (Bob) often seem to be on the forefront of catching these folks who need it, one thing to keep in mind when renaming trolls, doppelgangers, etc. and it's very important: After the rename - immediately after - you have to register the old name yourself, because it becomes available again. If you don't do this, the editor can simply re-register the name if they want to. Just an FYI if you didn't already know. ħumanUser talk:Human 17:18, 24 December 2008 (EST)

There was a young man who said "God
Must find it exceedingly odd
To think that the tree
Should continue to be
When there's no one about in the quad."
"Dear Sir: Your astonishment's odd;
I am always about in the quad.
And that's why the tree
Will continue to be
Since observed by, Yours faithfully, God."

I don't find it too odd
That there's no sign of the sod.
For I've not seen him here
Nor anywhere near
And I should know, 'cause I am the quad.

I had a minor hallucination
That can't be explained by inebriation
"Woz all that", I aSK'ed
And voices said, "shu'up bastid"
Now I know Santa's a human invention

I'll be here all week, tell your friends. Sorry mine wasn't, you know, funny, like the others. ħumanUser talk:Human 00:08, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry for suggesting that I masturbated over you Bob. The fact of the matter is that you're not my sort of guy. Sorry for leading you on! MarcusCicero (talk) 18:52, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Oops! Seems that I may take a while to build up trust again with some members. I can understand how upset you must have been after I suggested that I masturbated over you. But I will prove to you all that I am a changed man. MarcusCicero (talk) 20:04, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
