Christopher Charles Cantwell (1980–), better known as the Crying Nazi, is a neo-Nazi and white supremacist and alt-right activist. His most infamous appearance was during the Unite the Right rally at Charlottesville, Virginia during August 2017 on a Vice documentary focusing on far-right protestors in the rally.

It should be noted these terms are not us editorializing, these are terms he uses to describe himself. He has admitted to being a fascist and says his "goal here is to normalize racism."[1]

Appearance on Vice[edit]

Cantwell is infamous for being the focus of a Vice documentary that followed the protests in Charlottesville. In the documentary, Cantwell made several bigoted statements against Jewish people and black people, referring to black victims of police brutality as “little black assholes acting like savages”, and called Jared Kushner a “Jewish bastard”.[2]

Crying on camera[edit]

Perhaps the most infamous moment which made Cantwell well known and gave him his nickname was when he filmed himself in camera, crying heavily while stating that a warrant for his arrest was out by the local Charlottesville police for literally being a fucking terrorist. He claimed that he filed a complaint and followed the entire legal process during the protests (which is complete bullshit if you saw the Vice documentary). In addition, his sobbing on camera now that he was facing accountability (OH NOES!) for his actions hilariously contradicted his violent tough-guy persona in the interview. For reference, this is the man who once had an episode of his podcast called "I Almost Committed a Hate Crime" where he said:

I never wanted to jump over a counter and attack a f------ hotel clerk because he f------ didn’t speak proper English. But what it is now is that I see it as a f------ threat. You know? I feel like my country is being f------- invaded. That like I’m being outbred. That guy has probably f------ 12 kids at home.[1]

He also regularly advocates for violent revolution against the government and the attacking of police officers,[1] but he broke down crying the second a police officer showed up at his door.
