Unblocking choose[edit]

Userspace[edit]
Make no mistake P, I am not trying to argue in favor of the copy and pasting, nor am I trying for vain arguments. But, "An editor's User page space is inviolable; they are free to do with it what they want, and no one should edit it without permission." Why can't he copy and paste? As a sysop, can you explain this rule? I am not a fan of it, perhaps its time to clarify some restrictions. SHahB 22:46, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
- Keeping trolls from raising havok is more important. The castle rule is designed to apply to actual members of the community, in any case.— Unsigned, by: 195.195.195.195 / talk / contribs 22:48, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
- We had this probelem with User:Newton also. Someone posted an insult on his userpage. He reverted and they put it back. This went on and on. Does this rule only apply to the liberals? SHahB 22:51, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
- I think that was more like unfriendly wandalism than a systematic censoring of his views, Shabby. Even Newton is protected by the castle rule, really. We let him keep that Social Darwinism stuff, don't we?— Unsigned, by: 195.195.195.195 / talk / contribs 22:52, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

- Hi Bohdan - this is prolly a better question for a real sysop like Human or Toulouse, but it strikes me that 1 - We don't exist in order to provide a forum for CP material; your wiki does that job just fine all by itself. 2 - There's probably a lame argument to be made re: copyright infringement, but I'm just pulling that out of my ass. 3 - I don't see the "userpage is a castle" law as really workable - what if people wanted to put up calls to march all the Jews/blacks/Ukrainians/Quebecois off to camps? or illegal images? I think there are limits - and a huge swack of text taking up space may be one of them. I dunno, ask Trent, it's his blog. Peace. PFoster 22:53, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

data[edit]
My widget dictionary says data can actually be plural or singular. But "data" wasn't causing the problem. "All" requires the verb to be singular, regardless what we have all of. ThunderkatzHo! 12:31, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
- So, "where is all the knives?" That makes my brain hurt, but you seem to be saying that would be grammatically correct? It does happen sometimes, that my understanding of common usage and grammar rules don't match up. Still, either way, it's not that big of a screw-up. -Smyth 12:39, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
- True, and I'm no longer so sure of what I said above. Screw that, I think what I said above was dead wrong. All does take "are." ThunderkatzHo! 12:58, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

- Yes, I think this is presently a word in flux. It certainly used to be as Mr Foster says, but it seems to be changing into a word like "headquarters" which may be either plural or singular.--Bobbing up 12:34, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
- wiktionary Has: Colloquially, this word is often used as an uncountable noun with a singular verb.--Bobbing up 12:43, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
- I don't know if this a pond thing but in my experience data as singular is more of a British usage whilst our American cousins tend to use it (correctly) as a plural noun. GenghisOur ignorance is God; what we know is science. 12:51, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
- Data can, indeed, be singular or plural; it's technically properly plural, but then again, "octopodes" is technically the proper plural of "octopus." "All" is singular, but in this sentence, "all" is not the subject, but an indefinite pronoun doing duty as an indefinite adjective modifying the subject.

Leaving and not Coming Back[edit]
A very wise man once told me - "you can't get something for nothing." In this case I can't get something I have really come to enjoy - the lulz and smart discourse that goes on on this wiki - without paying for it by wasting my time and energy engaging with the arguments of fundamentally ignorant, self-righteous and mean-spirited people like Assfly, Crocoshite, Ed, Bugler and Kajagoogoo. After two CP-free weeks spent hiking on the west coast of Ireland, I realized how much better life is without reading the ravings of idiots. And so I have decided to leave y'all. I thought about staying on and just keeping clear of CP-related material - but that would be like going to a strip club and saying that you won't look at the naked girls. A noble gesture, but a futile endeavour.
Take care and keep fighting the good fight.
-Paul.
