Being an Expos fan must have been brutal. I actually like that the AL has the DH rule while the NL doesn't -- it's a best of both worlds thing. The DH can make the game more exciting by replacing the automatic out at the bottom of the line-up. However, it takes some strategy out of the game in terms of managing the bench and bullpen. I don't see why the DH rule gets people so foaming at the mouth, other than the AL/NL rivalry aspect. Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 04:02, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Promotion[edit]

Hi there. I have promoted you temporarily, to head off the burgeoning wheel war. Please don't take it personally! I very much encourage you to make a good case and vote for Tisane's removal if you feel this strongly, and we can get the issue sorted out. And I know that you're probably aware that it doesn't work when someone just unilaterally decides to ban someone. Sorry about the trouble. Thanks!--ADtalkModerator 03:22, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

And here is a new mop. Works the same as the old mop. ТyBored 04:53, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
seriously--I cannot believe a bunch of educated, intelligent grown-ups are even having this discussion. Guy logs onto website to promote having sex with children. Said website reacts by suggesting that the wisest course of action should be putting that behavior to a vote. Absolutely unbelievable. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Theory of Practice Haters gonna hate. 04:56, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
His essay was deleted, and no one appears to be trying to get it back. The vote is, of course, whether or not this lapse in behavior necessitates a ban. If it's as straightforward as you make it, then the vote should very easily carry, right?--ADtalkModerator 05:02, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

It was his continuing arguing of the point on the relevant talk page--what I linked to in the Coop posting--that made it clear to me that vaping the essay did not end the issue. And the vote seems to be going pretty clearly in the direction I figured it would, as, in true Rationalwiki fashion, we are afraid to take a stand on simple community self-preservation against odious trolls. The fact that this is even considered a vote-worthy issue is nothing short of appalling to me. For chrissakes, he's advocating the decriminalization of one of the worst acts in the human repertoire, and we're too afraid of stepping on his "free speech" rights? Sick. Pathetic. Shameful. Theory of Practice Haters gonna hate. 05:07, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Either it's self-evident that he should be banned (and everyone will agree with you and he will be voted out) or it's not, and most people don't find his essay/defense to be reason enough to ban him. In neither case do I see any benefit to letting you just decide by yourself who gets to stay. I encourage you to make a good case on the vote, though.--ADtalkModerator 05:13, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm not going to vote in a vote we shouldn't be having. Fuck it, you want the pedo, you can have him. This is ridiculous. Theory of Practice Haters gonna hate. 05:28, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

kissing[edit]

I'm trying, but the response rate is bad. And I hate bars - I don't drink, and I hate clubs with loud obnoxious music, and I probably wouldn't get along with anyone who does that anyway. So, lots of people have suggested I join an activity group or something, but I find most to be so mind numbingly boring that I can't stand it for the relatively small chance to find a girl who might like me. The biggest problem probably is that I don't make friends, and I find most standard parties and the small talk to be excruciating. Meh, I do recognize that it is all my fault. I just wish there were easier ways to meet women who 1- don't mind that I don't have a lot of friends and that we don't have any common friends, and 2- don't like clubbing, drinking, traveling, or lots of outdoorsy stuff, and 3- can enjoy fun (pseudo?)-deep science and philosophical conversations and gaming. -- Sorry, but you asked for the rant via the block! ~smile~ LiberalOfAnUnknownVariant (talk) 07:39, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

As an individual of Franco-Scottish extraction, I get accused of being "not white" surprisingly often, blue eyes notwithstanding. Ken is a sysop on CP and is therefore a valid target. If he's ill his philosophy dictates that he is responsible for taking care of it. Somebody with an illness venturing out into the world and saying "Respectfully, I disagree" should be treated with full respect. Somebody acting like he acts can fuck off. rpeh •TCE 22:04, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
There's no doubt that CP is what brought most of us here and that it's CP that draws most new readers in. There's also little doubt, given the "Gentlemen!" shout outs, that at least some of User:Conservative's idiocy is performed for readers of this website. And while CP is a bastion of irrationality and base stupidity, given the extent to which a good amount of its pages views are driven by us, that its already insignificant and marginal status would become even more insignificant and marginal if we left it alone. There is also little doubt, in my mind anyway, that the good people of New Mexico did not grant an ostensibly educational not-for-profit foundation a tax-exempt status so that people could congregate to call a guy a fairy on a regular basis or to knowingly and willingly provoke him into saying stupid things--things that, unlike, say, the things said by many recent candidates for elected office in the U.S., or the advertising put out by woo-merchants trying to separate people from their money, are not worth refuting. Theory of Practice Still tryin' to figure it all out. 22:13, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
A person finds our sole mention in the world's most popular reference, Wikipedia. It says we're a vandal site. To confirm this, they check our most popular pages, where they see people fag-bashing. Weeks later, a user wonders why we don't get any new editors interested in writing articles, which is what the Foundation was created to promote in the first place.
Another user, under the mistaken impression that the URL up top reads "Anti-Conservapedia.org" instead of "RationalWiki.org" — and seemingly unaware that the website is now part of an incorporated entity with legal, financial, and social obligations — pops up to vigorously defend their right to bash fags, and furthermore that their fab-bashing should continue to be subsidized with other people's donations.
Meanwhile, the Foundation starts a new project as an alternative resource to the website itself, because they are so fucking embarrassed by the site's execrable community that they want as large a buffer as possible between the public and said community.
But it all totally balances out in the end! Users like Rpeh donate money to keep their shitty website afloat, which the Foundation that actually owns the website uses to subsidize projects that aren't an embarrassing turdpile. It's a racket! A lame, fag-bashing racket. Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 22:48, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but the immaturity displayed by much of the CONservapedia commentators really doesn't help. I once had a nuclear engineer from the GE-Hitachi nuclear project I was working on interested in coming and arguing with Abd about cold fusion. He showed up, took a quick look at the most used pages, saw WIGO talk:CP and was disgusted enough with the childishness there to walk away. I'm almost certain this is not a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. True, the guy is also very conservative (in the American political sense). But I'd rather attract intelligent conservatives to shoot down what we can all agree is crankery than to attract immature anti-CONservapedians to sit and shit talk about what color underwear Ken Demyer claims to wear. I don't get involved very in the CP affair, I did for a short while years ago but it gets nowhere. Still the foundation relies on educated people giving their time free. As always, the problem is that if someone comes along without prior experience of what a particular, ahem, "contributor" is like, then they'll assume it's a little too early or ask to wait for any extra provocation. Scarlet A.pngnarchistModerator 18:19, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
I couched my request in tentative terms, in an attempt to indicate that I would be content with preemptive binning. ToP took appropriate action, and I do firmly believe that dissecting or second-guessing such a fait accompli is a waste of keystrokes and screen time. Szasz[edit]

I find it difficult to understand intellectually how a supporter of Glaberman can reject Thomas Szasz Dirk Steele (talk) 15:49, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I've never heard of Thomas Szasz. Therefore, it would be kind of hard for me to reject him. Theory of Practice "Now we stand outcast and starving 'mid the wonders we have made." 15:59, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Well he is either this person http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz or this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz. Most of my arguments here are based on his work. He is worth a read although I do not recommend The Myth Of Mental Illness at first because it is steeped in its historical time. The Manufacture of Madness, Coercion Or Cure, and Ceremonial Chemistry are worth a look even if you eventually disagrre with him. Dirk Steele (talk) 16:43, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

You obviously demonstrate a love of authoritarian mobocracy. Might is right. You and I have very different concepts of liberty and anarchy. Dirk Steele (talk) 18:02, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
I think you need to do a better job a separating the way things play out on a marginal website and the actual politics of really-existing human beings. You know nothing about me, my politics, or what I love. Also, unsurprisingly, you failed to answer the actual question I posed, and instead dealt in wild conjecture. When you anwer the question about where I have made a statement on mental health, I will be glad to continue the conversation. Theory of Practice "Now we stand outcast and starving 'mid the wonders we have made." 18:21, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

This site reflects exactly the actual politics of 'really existing' human beings. You want to ban me from stating my ideas because you disagree with them and in the way I express them. Tough shit. Censor me. I do know about you only in as much you have expressed your opinion coming from Martin Glaberman. Your views about liberty conflict with mine. Dirk Steele (talk) 18:59, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I do not know your views on mental health. I have been talking about your 'libertarian' ideas and your love of the banishment ritual as expoused by the magickal genius of Crowley. I you are a authoritarian anarchist. Might is right. This is not my definition of libertarianism.

"You want to ban me from stating my ideas because you disagree with them and in the way I express them." I have said this to you several time before, and I will say it one last time. I will say it in small words, in the hope that you will understand. I have no opinion on your ideas, because I do not know, and I do not care to know what your ideas are. I do not read your posts beyond ascertaining that they are irrelevant to ongoing discussions and seem like no more than attempts to derail conversations and force them to address the issues that you care about. I spend no time thinking about the content of your posts for the very reason that they are uninteresting and largely irrelevant to ongoing discussions. As for the ways in which you express them, well, if you are going to be rude, you can only expect people to be rude in return. I am done with you now. You are no longer welcome to post on my talk page. Thank you and good day. Theory of Practice "Now we stand outcast and starving 'mid the wonders we have made." 19:11, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Just one question: when you read the essay (which I originally titled under "Fun"), you didn't actually believe I really meant I was saying in there, did you? If not, I'm glad. If yes, Poe's Law is all over you. (I'm asking this because you said "Feel free to go nuts there" on my talk page and because the essays are a bit more serious than the fun pages.) No, no, I didn't believe it was anything but a joke, but the whole tone of the thing read a lot like one guy's take on a topic, and not an article, per se. Prolly a better fit for essay space. Did you obtain a belief in God during your churching, or are you still qualified to join the UU non-theist association? Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 07:46, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Well, I didn't join the church to explore non-belief in God. Theory of Practice "Now we stand outcast and starving 'mid the wonders we have made." 15:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
I thought you might have joined UU just for their stance on ethics and making the world a better place; many atheists are in church for that reason, even in orthodox denominations. Welcome (back) to the Nag. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 21:01, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Well, I wouldn't have joined a church that didn't suit my political/ethical view/vision of what a better world would look like; likely those issues would trump any theological differences. But I also needed a place where I could explore Jesus's teachings and other religious traditions without having to think around a personified God--if that makes sense; I'm still trying to figure it out. Luckily, the "not a creed, but a covenant" aspect of the UU gives me a lot of latitude to do that. Enough to say, 2012 had some moments of existential shittiness that forced me to reevaluate aspects of my cosmological stance, coupled with deep conversations and moments of reflection that had a revelatory dimension. Or maybe I'm just finally losing my mind.

As to fad diets, whether you use the standard definition, or the Rational Wiki definition, Atkins, Zone, South Beach and even Paleo don't qualify. Question[edit]

Why'd you revert the article? If one can have relatively detailed articles on Time Cube and Flat Earthers, I don't see why a Hoxha article can't be reasonably detailed considering he was the leader of a country and many academic works exist on Albania under him. --Ismail (talk) 14:12, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

When somebody with relatively few contributions who seems like a single-issue editor totally revamps an article, especially one on a topic that a lot of us are unfamiliar with, it's probably going to get undone. Two things: 1. start a conversation on the talk page; detail what changes you want to make and why--don't just re-write the article; 2. keep in mind, we are not trying to be Wikipedia, and we are not writing an encyclopedia. If you want to write an objective, factual, boring history of Hoxha, this isn't really the place to do it. Make it short, snappy and fun. Theory of Practice "...and we do love you madly." 14:18, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
My proposed article is not nearly as long as the Stalin article on this website, and it's hardly some dense writing either. I'm fully capable of writing "objective, factual, boring" histories; I wrote the "Soviet–Albanian split" article on Wikipedia as an example. I guess I'll address the talk page of the Hoxha article. --Ismail (talk) 14:24, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Stalin's a pretty big deal whose life/work affected millions and had implications on a global scale; with all due respect to my Albanian friends, well, I hear it's a nice country. And you say "I'm fully capable of writing "objective, factual, boring" histories." Great. But we don't really want those. Mali is in peril, in danger of fragmenting and providing a base for radical jihadists. The French have the right idea. Syria is fragmenting, breaking up, and threatens to envelop the entire region. The UN ought to intervene militarily, topple Assad, and usher in elections. Intervening in countries that threaten to destroy themselves is a moral and absolute good. Look at what could have happened in the former Yugoslavia (One of the few things Blair did right). I didn't support Iraq or Afghanistan for the record, they were wars of aggression.
