Sam Hyde (1985-) is a “comedian”, troll, and alt-right YouTuber known for his extreme trolling and occasional harassment. Dispelling any doubt that he is far-right-wing just for "edgy" purposes, he's also offered material support, including donating $5,000 to Andrew Anglin (the founder of The Daily Stormer).[1] Hyde has been labeled as ‘alt right’, and his comedy and humor are widely popular among neo-nazis, white-supremacists and various political reactionaries.
A core component of Hyde's work has been recycling 4chan misogyny, crank "hate facts" and whatever else can get him brownie points from bigots with money and free time.
Controversy[edit]
Misidentified gunman[edit]
Perhaps one of Hyde’s most infamous trolls is when he spread an image of himself posing as a gunman. The image shows Hyde holding a gun, and spread the image across social media to troll people regarding the identity of any recent mass shooters.
Hyde’s homosexuality standup rant[edit]
In 2014, Hyde did a 20 minute long anti-gay speech as "standup" at a bar in New York on a comedy night, after apparently printing off a page straight from an anti-gay hate site. Hyde has said he was trolling in order to get a reaction, yet reception to the video on YouTube was ultimately positive with 550,000 views and thousands of comments praising his rant.
Pedophilia[edit]
Hyde said that "55% of homosexuals are pedophiles", a claim not supported by any research. Unfortunately many of the watchers believe Hyde to be serious and have claimed Hyde had “too many red pills”. Nick Fuentes later used Hyde's standup as a source to argue that 50% of gay men were pedophiles in one of his livestreams.
Promiscuity[edit]
Hyde claimed gay men have "hundreds of sexual partners" in his stand up trolling rant. This claim is completely debunked by two decades of large scale representative surveys in which gay men had a median of 10-20 sexual partners in their lives. About 25% of gay men have more than 50 sexual partners, and then an even smaller portion of them have more than 100. Examples of such surveys include the GSS, NATSAL and ASHR surveys which in total have surveyed over 100,000 people. Unfortunately, many of the alt-right who co-opted Hyde believe his speech to be serious and thus take his claims seriously.
Early work[edit]
Hyde's early work included harassing prostitutes and filming it before uploading it to YouTube, copying Bam Margera and Tom Greens "harass my mom and film it" thing, and making videos in stereotypical liberal cities like Williamsburg, painting the inhabitants as a hive of drug-taking "lowest common denominators". Hyde would then spend the rest of the street interviews hunting for people with divorced parents, homosexuals, promiscuous individuals, atheists, or anyone his audience might feel revulsion toward. If such a person was encountered they would then be made fun of for aforementioned traits.
"Comedic" partnerships[edit]
Sam made videos with prolific harasser Frank Hassle aka Cameron Williams, including after Cameron was arrested in Cobb County Georgia. The description of his crime is paywalled,[2] but his mugshot is here.
Williams and Hyde, for example, once attended a public gaming meetup in real life to harass the players while filming it, faking medical emergencies, trying to start fights, with a member of their entourage committing various crimes by purposefully blowing whatever he was smoking in the players faces. There was no comedy to the bit, the entire thing was just harassment. By the time full scale violence was about to break out Williams and Hyde scurried out whimpering like cowards, with a member of their entourage going around saying they took it all back and didn't mean it.
Hyde had a short-lived cable television show on the Turner Broadcasting media time-slot named Adult Swim and was called “Million Dollar Extreme”. This show was cancelled after journalists highlighted Sam's connections to the alt-right.[3] The show was much less political than his off-TV work, but still contained hints, like a sketch complaining about the governments role as an environmental protector and an un-aired white supremacist sketch.
Style[edit]
Sam's "shock comedy" style is the following, nearly every time:
- Say something offensive/racist/sexist/extreme
- Squeeze your mouth narrowly, letting the edges of mouth rise in a half smile
- Do something offensive/racist/sexist/extreme
- Offend people
- Claim victory
If this sounds like online trolling, except in real life, that's correct. He is equivalent to that annoying guy you know who repeats online memes ad nauseam in real life because he doesn't read books. That and politically pandering without limit to a 2013-era 4chan userbase that doesn't use 4chan anymore.
Riding off a then-nascent online movement in 2015, Hyde hit the peak of his popularity and career with a Tedx talk in 2016 which he pretended was a Ted talk, misleading his online audience that he had fooled the Ted organizers, when Tedx actually lets anyone speak, unlike Ted. Additionally his speech wasn't even written by him. Sam basically crowdsourced 4chan types to write much of his early work, kind of like the Yandere Dev of "comedy".
Current work[edit]
Having run out of comedy ideas by the late 2010s, Sam thought to copy Andy Kaufman by doing fake wrestling and/or boxing matches. These matches went nowhere, so Hyde has since become a podcaster much like Joe Rogan.
