RationalWiki:2023 board of trustees election/Nominations

From RationalWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is the page to nominate potential board members and for nominees to accept or reject their nomination.

We are electing three board members out of the total five. Nominees are encouraged to read the Guide for board of trustees election before accepting or rejecting a nomination. Campaigning takes place over here.

Process[edit]

Any user may nominate any number of users who meet the requirements, including themselves, by {{ping}}-ing that user name in the nominee section and informing that user (manually or with {{BoardNotice}}) on their talk page (talk page notification required). No second is required. Each nominee must accept the nomination or else they will not be eligible during the election.

Nominees may accept a nomination by adding their signature to it. Those who wish to decline nominations should strikeout the nomination with a brief note. Likewise, ineligible nominations should also be struckout.

To nominate, ping their user name and sign (otherwise, {{ping}} won't work):

*{{ping|tmtoulouse}} I choose you, Tmtou! ~~~~

If you want, you can then re-edit to remove your signature.

To accept the nomination: Indicate acceptance, delete their signature, sign, and move your username to "approved".

To reject the nomination: Indicate reject-ance, delete their signature, sign, and move your username to "rejected".

Requirements[edit]

In order for a user to be nominated they must meet certain requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a registered user for 1 year or longer
  • Have 250 edits or more
  • Have at least 1 edit in the last 3 months

The Board meets about once per quarter (or more often, as necessary), usually for one-two hours. Almost all of the business of board takes place over e-mail. Depending on the number of projects and the time of year board members should expect to spend a few hours a month reading, contributing and voting in these e-mail discussions.

Members do have certain powers and duties candidates should be aware of. Membership in the Board means being a corporate director of the RationalMedia Foundation, Inc. In general, corporate directors exercise the highest level of management and control over a corporation and are ultimately responsible for its governance and welfare. They appoint and supervise the Operations Manager, have the final word on the corporation's purpose and goals and ensure that it has adequate resources to carry them out, ensure compliance with the corporation's legal and ethical obligations, approve major expenditures, and respond to significant changes of circumstance in a timely manner. In practice, their job is generally supervisory, as they delegate authority to carry out the corporation's needs to the Operations Manager, who in turn may delegate further authority to his or her staff.

Boardmembers' names will be signed to US state filings and IRS forms, which are both publicly available.

Current composition[edit]

The current members of the board of trustees are:

Per the board's charter, Board members serve a two year term. The Operations Manager is appointed by the board. This means that this year, we are electing three trustees as the terms expire for Spud, GeeJayK, and DuceMoosolini.

  • Thanks for the nomination, cosmik, but I’m gonna decline if we get enough people to run for it. Pizza SLICE.gifChef Moosolini’s Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 21:10, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
  • I'm considering accepting the nomination but not sure yet. I'd be most interested in pushing for technical changes to RW, mainly fixing issues in the wiki software configuration that have been put off for long, and maybe more. (I used to maintain a wiki back in the mid 2010s, which no longer exists, and did some extension coding of my own then. But I haven't touched PHP 7 and the latest MediaWiki code yet.) Given this, maybe I should also request to become a tech in time for campaigning. As for my personal circumstances, on the one hand I'm jobless and stuck in a rut, on the other hand I have plenty of time. I also wonder how the board "meets" and such, and if it's all in text, that would be the easiest for me (no equipment missing). --ApooftGnegiol (talk) 15:21, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
    • There's a Google Group and a quarterly Skype meeting, although I've pushed for the Board to start meeting via Discord. Pizza SLICE.gifChef Moosolini’s Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 19:07, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
      • I'm accepting. (I think I can get Skype working, but I only have one laptop with a camera, and testing by myself would require two.) --ApooftGnegiol (talk) 19:40, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
  • What happens if there aren't enough candidates in about 3 days? Does this mean there will be less members on the board then? Arcadium Trancefer (talk) 12:22, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
  • Shall campaigning start now? It technically should have started five days ago but we didn't have enough people running then. Plutocow (talk) 00:05, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes. I shall use my godly powers (edit the sitenotice) to unofficially start the campaign. Rabbitseatcarrots (talk) 14:12, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
It's almost 11 o'clock at night where I am and I'm tired. I will start my campaign tomorrow. Spud (talk) 14:58, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
