Yep, you don't know. Thanks for the next 10 years of republican rule. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 18:27, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
I make no promises for Biden, but he has a viable path to 270 through the suburbs, college graduates, and women in general, and he puts the Senate in play. Which is precisely why he scares the real "right wing assholes" in the GOP so much. Bernie would have been annihilated in the general, and put the 2018 House gains at considerable risk. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 18:48, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
I make the absolute promise that a candidate running on nothing but who they're not never, ever wins a presidential election. It's as true with Hillary or Kerry against republicans as it was with Landon or Lilkie against FDR. Biden has no reason he's given for any human being in this country to vote for him besides the vague idea that he will beat the incumbent. There's no sagery or poll reading(though oh god those don't help his case) to it. Biden is electoral doom. The only way he could possibly pull up on that crashing plane hard enough was a sudden post DNC change of tone, and frankly he lacks the charisma to do it.
You're going to lose to a historically unpopular president, presiding over a disastrous economic crash, possibly with an active pandemic that specifically kills his base, and still somehow lose. It's pretty nuts.
It's not that Sanders was necessarily offering the best or correct things to voters, but that he was offering things at all that was the difference that made him have a fractional chance of winning. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 19:09, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Trump and the GOP machine think otherwise, else they wouldn't have gone to the mat over the batshit Shokin smear attempt. They had the time and resources to wargame the head-to-heads beforehand, so presumably they judged it was worth the political blood and treasure, and permanently shredding their own reputations in the process.
Looking at how quickly the Dem primary field consolidated, it's reasonable to suppose the DNC's head-to-head numbers say exactly the same thing. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 02:37, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

If you'd read the article you'd have seen the following: "According to an LD-1 Disclosure Form filed with the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Secretary of the Senate, J M Burkman and Associates—a lobbying firm owned by far-right activist Jack Burkman and co-run by Wohl—claims to have been hired by “Granite Realty [sic] LLC” in order to lobby on “[i]ssues relating to US DOJ, Senate Judiciary, [and the] House Judiciary.”

There's "desperate", and then there's hiring the world's most comically inept political operative. If she's got the money to afford a legal team like this, she's got the money to afford dirty tricksters who - and work with me here - might actually be capable of pulling off dirty tricks without beclowning themselves.
More to the point, though, is Wohl's established track record of mindbendingly stupid attention seeking via trying to insert himself into big news stories of the day. Occam's razor ftw. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 00:01, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
I haven't been following this specific case too closely, and yes, I agree that it is nothing short of ridiculous to imagine someone with that many connections hiring Wohl of all people. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 00:14, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Glad to hear it. Is there any good reason, then, why WIGO World should be currently lending some measure of credence to this guff? Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 00:19, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
I think at the *very* least we need to wait for more sources before a WIGO is visible (so hiding the source as you did is fine). At this point, per Google News it appears that the only sources reporting this are: A) The Daily Heil Mail, who are permabanned from The Other Wiki for good reason; B) the Law And Crime source -- this is a good source, but the article is skeptical of the truthfulness; C) a website called "Benzinga" which seems a bit like a sketchy aggregator (they also are skeptical of the truthfulness); and D) The Daily Dot, a decent source which flat out called bullshit. Most of the media has stopped giving a shit about the "boy that cried wolf" a long time ago. Soundwave106 (talk) 03:08, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Last time I checked "I don't believe it's real" is not a basis for refuting something. Yes, Wohl is a troll. Until you have proof that this is a stunt, actual media reporting takes precedence. Simple as that. Prove he's trolling, an the WIGO can go down. Until then, it's news and it stays. Facts don't care about how you feel. WIGO is going back up. I get kind of repelled by the idea that meaning must be self-constructed and the subjectivity trap that entails. Regarding your interactions with Oxyaena[edit]

Under my attempted charitable interpretation of your beliefs, attitudes, and intentions regarding Oxyaena - they seem to boil down to the following: (a) you simply strongly disagree with Oxyaena's positions, views and actions, and (b) you would like her to change - her positions, views, and actions, and (c) you would like her to change to the positions, views, and actions - that you deem proper (particularly on this wiki).
However, I think that you have displayed a lack of tact, and perhaps rationality, in trying to achieve this goal (if indeed those are your goals). Your history of interactions with Oxyaena (at least since last year), can easily be prima-facie interpreted as attempts to humiliate her, rather than persuade or engage in fruitful discourse; insults or mockery, are of course, - fair game - when in the service of rationality, but your lack of tact, I fear, fails to cohere with what I deem to be your goals regarding Oxyaena.
Be all this as it may, I for one do not interpret you as a troll, I shall not stoop to such uncharitable and bad faith accusations. I find this fiasco painfully ironic, when I consider that you could be a more constructive contributor to the website; your sarcasm brings warmth to my limey heart, please don't let those embers peter out, due to this silly saga. –LeucippusTalk 18:13, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Lukashenko and Belarus[edit]

Hey Helena, how goes it? Are you keeping up with the circus in Belarus?—if so, would you mind sharing any of your thoughts? I’d appreciate some of your pellucid insight on Lukashenko’s Belarusian clusterfuck. Also, if you have the time, or rate guardian journalism, this piece is worth breezing over. LeucippusSalva veritate 00:12, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

It looks like Lukashenko figures he's got nothing to lose at this point. After so long in power, he's maybe even bonkers enough to believe it's all For the Good of the Country, and that not getting strung up from a lamppost is merely a happy consequence of his selfless patriotism.
I've no idea, though, how it'll all play out. An unstable and regionally disruptive Belarus would seem to work to Putin's advantage, as long as he can keep it teetering just short of implosion. And even if it did implode, he'd likely fancy his chances of hobbling any new pro-Western administration à la Ukraine.
tl;dr: FUBAR for the foreseeable. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 01:09, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. Lukashenko knows the west can’t do much. As for how Putin will respond, that’s less predictable. The situation in Belarus, reminds me of this scene from The Spy Who Came in From The Cold: I think Alec Leamas (the spy Richard Burton plays) encapsulates much of what a sceptic is (and ought to be)—pragmatic, realistic (as opposed to idealistic), and snarky; this is the sane response to such wickedly complicated problems as those that involve entire nations—strategy, negotiation, and pragmatic considerations always come to the fore. Lukashenko appears to be another “post-truth” politician whose unpredictability may even be intentional. How do we counter someone who holds truth in contempt and propagates falsehood as part of strategy?—we have to deal with them in a pragmatic fashion; wishful thinking and arguments from adverse consequence must be cast into the flame. I for one think that Alec Leamas’ outlook has a lot in common with certain editors who have not lost track of what scepticism involves: base your beliefs on those best supported by the evidence. LeucippusSalva veritate 18:32, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
I was only half joking about how Lukashenko might see himself and the situation. He's been in power for 27 years now and that can do seriously weird things to the brain. I imagine it being a bit like a star collapsing in on itself: eventually all last remnants of higher moral and strategic function are annihilated, and all that remains is some kind of super-dense id, unable to reason beyond the most immediate and basic questions of political and physical survival.
The smart move would be to GTFO and reconcile himself to living out his twilight years in a somewhat humiliating exile in Russia. He's doubtless got more than enough squirrelled away to afford a nice dacha somewhere and live very comfortably, but something obviously compels him to stand & fight.
Thanks for reminding me about The Spy. Peak Burton and deserves a rewatch soon. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 23:20, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
That article sounds really interesting, I’ll definitely give it a read-through tomorrow.
Lukashenko ought to settle down on the Black Sea in one of those charming brutalist-dachas, this way he’s not too far from all that action and excitement in the Crimea (I hear it’s a lovely bird watching spot too). LeucippusSalva veritate 01:20, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Some comedy you may like[edit]

Early Drake Sather gig. You seem like the kind of cat that would appreciate this humour:

LeucippusSalva veritate 23:24, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Good stuff. Cheers, man. Jim Jefferies' gun routine is probably the best thing I've seen in recent years:
Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 19:23, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
A comic tour de force; an American therapy. Tah, mate. Loved this: “Every cunt should be carrying a musket at all times!” and the ‘safe’ bit. LeucippusSalva veritate 23:47, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
As great as Jefferies’ routine is, I don’t think it touches the storytelling mastery of Chappelle’s “How old is 15 really?” (The title alone is brilliant).
LeucippusSalva veritate 00:08, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
We'll have to agree to disagree on the relative merits. I can't fault Chappelle's cojones, and he nails the essential hypocrisy at work, but as a routine, it's much more focused on commentary than comedy. FWIW, it's also presenting a weak argument with an obvious counter: both should still be legally treated as kids and protected accordingly. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 18:18, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Should we add this to our Logic article, or perhaps our newcomers guide‽; the section heading would read “Our Standards”. LeucippusSalva veritate 23:47, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

Sorry - got distracted with WIGO nonsense. Stick it in, man. It's certainly a damn sight funnier than the attempted strike-out gags that kick off the logic article. Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 22:44, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
No apology needed. It and The Holy Grail’s “Deductive Reasoning Scene” could both be added to the article. Tbh my proposal was mainly facetious: I gained more enjoyment out of the very idea of it being in the article, and perhaps being interpreted literally by a naïve user or passing visitor. LeucippusSalva veritate 23:21, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Here’s another rare Drake Sather gig (although, then again, all Drake Sather videos are rare)
; what fascinates me is that most of his comedy, and tv appearances, have been lost to a pre-internet era, to vhs tapes and God-knows what else. I was born in ‘98, so it’s particularly impressive to me that someone could basically have no internet record.
Anyway, for me, Drake’s comedy represents proper dark-humour i.e. untainted by the attention-seeking edginess of Ricky Gervais and kindred acts. Moreover, although there are obvious differences in sophistication, both Drake’s humour and that of Kubrick (the Titan himself) belong to the same category—both represent the genuine article of dark humour. As an aside, I’m aware that I seem to be plastering your talk-page with videos that you may not even care about ( I do so only because you seemed partial to these comic stylings), but then again, it would be pretty insincere for me to apologise now, in spite of having posted this …To be slightly lugubrious: I hope my my only fault in the plastering was naïveté. LeucippusSalva veritate 22:08, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Well Leucippus, "plastering a talkpage with videos" doesn't seem all that bad to me, considering that the users of this website used to post pics of naked men on each other's talkpages back in the day. Speaking of which:
I stumbled upon this on some random user's talkpage, don't quite remember who... Twas a while ago. I was curious and decided to look into it; apparently it's on quite a few talkpages. Why though...? Strange. Anyway, it's on yours now, I guess. Regards. (PS: I really liked you in the King's Speech. Should have gotten more screen time.) - Rairyu75 (Talk) 23:05, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

As for that (very talented) actress person, I've been chasing her through the courts for years trying to regain the rightful sole use of my name. For more information, please reread.

@Leucippus Relax, man. I'd make it pretty clear if I wanted you to fuck off. As for Sather, I don't rate him nearly as highly as you seem to, but I've enjoyed what I've seen so far.

My two favourite complete shows are probably Eddie Izzard's Glorious and (obviously) Bill Hicks' Revelations. On a quick search, I can only find snippets of Glorious online, which really don't do justice to how he builds up the surreal riffs & layers throughout the show. I'm sure a more determined search would unearth a free copy, but if not, it's worth the money IMO.

On the off-chance you haven't already seen it, I'll leave you with the man himself:

Helena Bonham Carter (talk) 19:51, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

@Helena Bonham Carter Cheers Bellatrix. I haven’t watched much of Izzard tbh, but from what you’ve described, I’m inclined to spend the effort finding that performance. As for Bill Hicks (why I didn’t mention him in my previous post escapes me…)—the man surely needs no introduction—“Revelations” is … well …sublime! You are right in thinking that I’m acquainted with what is, perhaps, Hicks’ opus; I haven’t watched it recently, so thanks for affording me the chance to reacquaint myself with a this comedic opiate.
Here’s a great story concerning two savant-like comedians (when SNL was funny)—Norm MacDonald and Andy Kauffman—regaled to us by Jim Downey.
Norm is not only funny but he has something a lot of comedians lack— “funny bones”: there just something about the way he tells his jokes—his eccentric personality— that is just giddily funny. It’s really difficult to tell with Norm and Kauffman where the act stops and the person begins; or, when their being sincere and when their being facetious—this beautiful scene from “The Guard” is in a similar vein:
