Userboxes[edit]

Your UXBs gave me my daily dose of lulz, thank you :) humanbe in 19:55, 10 August 2007 (CDT)

Thanks. Glad you like them. I encourage people to steal them, if they desire. At WP I'm rather anti-userbox, and have only used about two I made as parodies, but here I decided to go whole hog. DickTurpis 19:58, 10 August 2007 (CDT)
Hey, no offense, but I prefer to keep conv. on one page (wherever it starts) so I copied your reply here. Anyway, you should save them (as template:user:foobar or something like that, I'm sure you know how) and add them to our lists (follow the link from the main page for the lists we have). I'm sure many goats users would appreciate readymade access to them. ...still chuckling quietly to myself... Ooh, you used my scotch photo! Kewl... that reminds me... I'll be back in a few with my spelling and language usage impaired somewhat.. humanbe in 20:07, 10 August 2007 (CDT)
Actually, I don't know how. I've never really bothered with userboxen. Or even templates or categories really. At least, not in terms of making my own. But if you have any urge to, go ahead and save them however or wherever you like. I've become a little uncertain about the Linus box; I didn't realize until a minute ago there was a User:Linus here. I just like the cartoon character. I think I might join you (in spirit) with that drink. DickTurpis 20:19, 10 August 2007 (CDT)
1. Don't worry about Linus, he won't be offended. It's actually funnier because of him. 2. Go here to see our lists. You already know how to format uxben, obviously. Follow the links and you'll see how they are "saved". You smart person I trust and can copy wiki markups. 3. One of our editors (our resident vandal, a CP sysop, and a very interesting person) has brought up the issue of your "reagan" uxb on my talk page (my comments are there). While I first thought "wow, that's frikkin edgy", I then laughed. But maybe, just maybe, you might not want to save that one as a template. Of course, I would defend your doing so, I am just responding in a sensitive, pre-drunk way to his concerns. 4. Uh... ok, if you need clearer instructions on how to "save" your uxbs, ask and I'll add it to the file I linked above (computerz are so kewl!). Cheerz!!!! humanbe in 21:27, 10 August 2007 (CDT)
Fantastic userboxes. A hoot. I have to steal some.--Bob_M (talk) 15:08, 11 August 2007 (CDT)
Having been to Human's talk page I see that there is some debate over the Reagan one. It's a bit close to the edge - but I won't object to it. --Bob_M (talk) 15:12, 11 August 2007 (CDT)

My word! Aint I the higgerant one? I'd completely forgotten about the event. Tis a wee bit un-nice but who said userpages had to be nice. Keep15:42, 11 August 2007 (CDT)

Yes[edit]

Your userboxes are awesome. (As for the Nazi analogies... um, which Nazi was the fat one, again? I think Ed Poor should be the fat Nazi.) --Marty 22:25, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Thanks. The fat one is Goering, currently RobS, but he's been gone for more than half a year, so it's probably time to write him off. I think Ed works just as well, if not better, actually. Bugler might make a better Goebbels. Thanks for the idea. DickTurpis 23:36, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Atheists[edit]

What about the vast majority of the world who are not atheists? What about the agnostics? Bohdan 15:17, 28 August 2007 (CDT)

Don't take these comments overly seriously. Sure, one can be rational and religious, though I maintain that a scpetical atheism is the most rational line of thought. I'm just having some fun at Terry's expense. DickTurpis 15:20, 28 August 2007 (CDT)

I found out by accident that if you're using firefox and hit reload whilst holding down the shift key it'll up the "page accessed" numbers, (clears the cache or somesuch), (okay we all knew that already),but you don't have to wait for it to actually reload. As fast as your stubby index finger can click reload it counts as a new hit. CЯacke® 22:26, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

Eh, Dick (can I call you that?), I think you should refrain from using decimals in block lenghts. I mean, you blocked me at 4:20 for approximately 2.718 minutes, but at 4:23, the block was somehow still in effect. I also tried blocking Human, but the system said he was still blocked, twenty minutes after his block of 3.14159265 seconds should've expired. So yah, no decimals. The wiki is also starting to act funny (to lay an unfair guilt trip on you), but that may or may not be you. :-) --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 23:42, 9 February 2008 (EST)

CP analogies[edit]

Those are hilarious, you should copy it to the CP namespace and flesh it out a bit. Finally, analogies I "get" - it helps that you explained them, too! humanUser talk:Human 18:13, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

Glad you like them. Some of them are too perfect but some are not so great. I never did find quite the right Ribbentrop, but I think Streicher/Conservative is right on. Deciding exactly who was Himmler, Heydrich, and Bormann was tricky. TK was Bormann at his best when he used to dismissively answer questions Andy was asked on his talk page (usually by newbies). I came up with most of these after reading a book on the Nuremberg Trials. Good read. DickTurpis 18:34, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

i thought of exactly the same "cold, dead hand..." joke. but, i guess, it is in somewhat bad taste. i don't care enough to argue with the mob though. airdish 09:41, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

Well, it wasn't in good taste, exactly, I admit. Had I been stone cold sober I may not have posted it. I don't view it as an attack, however, just a quip. Someone once described me as the one who says what everyone else is thinking. This is probably an example of that. DickTurpis 09:55, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
Heh, yeah, just reading main talk I just knew what your joke had to be. We ripped on Falwell when he died, but he was truly a monster. Heston at least was a decent actor, and didn't exactly "run" the NRA -- the NRA being the only thing one could really hold against him (sorry, sqwirl). I guess he was a conservative too, but he just wasn't that bad of guy to not get his due "week of silent respect" upon ceasing metabolism. JMHO. — Unsigned, by: Human / talk / contribs

NightFlare is, by this stroke of logical genius, declared the winner! SusanG  ContribsTalk 13:01, 21 June 2008 (EDT)
Don't be under the illusion that you have made a convincing point, Susan. One of the greatest debaters and Ken apologists, Robert Turkel, has described NightFlare as "a man who has never won a debate," and yet he is considered one of the greatest debaters on the pro-Ed-idiocy side of the argument! What does that say about the others who cast their votes for Ed Poor? Furthermore noted debater Elephant Scroteman has pointed out that Ed-voters give 76% less money to charity than those who vote for Ken. I, however, will not debate someone such as NightFlare who has no credentials. If the reanimated corpse of Albert Einstein were to appear, or perhaps HAL 9000, that might be someone worthy of debating me! But I will not waste my time with NightFlare. No websites run by men with doctorates link to his userpage, nor does a award winning author. Why should I waste my valuable time with such a person? DickTurpis 13:46, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

I have a very important Talk page posting for you[edit]

It seems the votes are being manipulated! Genghis claims he is voting for Ed, but he clearly says, and I quote, "Ken is just stupid". Now in my world, Stupid=Idiot, therefore, I think it is clear that Genghis is actually voting for Ken. I think dark forces have manipulated him and forced his hand into a convenient ballot box at the last moment. The Ed camp is known to be a powerful force...you can read my thinking. We need to do something! I'm going to start by making myself a cocktail! DogP 20:39, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

This issue will be noted by wiki-historians as the one that finally tore RationalWiki asunder, under the weight of voluminous campaigning, propaganda, "paid for" advertisements, and much wikilawyering. Mark my words! ħumanUser talk:Human 22:46, 21 June 2008 (EDT)

The best gangster movie of that specific genre (and by that I mean post-Godfather, f-bomb laden, ultra-violent killfest) is Goodfellahs. Classic. DickTurpis 00:55, 28 August 2008 (EDT)

Wasn't it Churchill who said that ending sentences with propositions is something up with which we should not put? DickTurpis (talk) 18:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
I think he said something along those lines, but it's been through the myth machine for 60-odd years now. My attempts to correct other preposition based crime on here have been met with derision. I am reminded of the scene in Bevis and Butthead do America where an FBI agent attempts to rearrange the sentence "That guy whose toolshed they were whacking off in" to avoid the preposition ending - modern day Churchillian. DeltaStarSenior SysopSpeciationspeed! 20:49, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
My favorite example of ending sentences with prepositions comes from, I believe, E.B. White: "A father of a little boy goes upstairs after supper to read to his son, but he brings the wrong book. The boy says, 'What did you bring that book that I don't want to be read to out of up for?'" Love it. DickTurpis (talk) 20:56, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
My father loves to recite the following: "One day I lost a preposition, it fell beneath my chair. 'How dare you put me in this postion?! Up from out of in under there!'". DogPMarmite Patrol 13:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

retards are funny[edit]

I used to live in small suburb on the outskirts of the city that was close to the city hospital and associated services. Because of that fact a lot slightly touched and slow individuals lived nearby in council flats and hospital wards with day leave. There was one drooling fool who used to sit outside the supermarket banging two sticks together and yelping at the top of lungs. It was always kinda bizarre but one day as I approached he was slightly more vocal than usual and when I rounded the corner I found him in the middle of the footpath topless, banging his sticks together while a friend, a 300 pound woman friend (also topless), rode in circles around him on miniture circus bicycle braying like a hyena.
I completely melted with laughter. No person, no matter how understanding, could be faced with such a ugly scene of hilarity and hope to remain composed.
I have never seen anything quite like it since. i9 06:01, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Is brilliant. That is all. –SuspectedReplicant retire me 18:26, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

I wanted to ask you[edit]

In the Chicken Coop you said that my actions (that I freely acknowledge were childish) reflect poorly on my ability to be a good representative on the board. I'm specifically wondering which behaviors you believe reflect poorly on me, and why such behaviors which have been done by nearly every other user on this wiki constitutes a specific reason to distrust me specifically, beyond "it was pointed to in a coop" and "she openly acknowledges them". After all, would you rather I lie, and be against the record? Or that I acknowledge that yes, indeed I do poop, and that this is my poop, and that is my poop, but that poop is not mine. --Eira OMTG! The Goat be Praised. 22:01, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't believe I related your actions to board membership specifically, but your actions did make me question your judgment, and that is one thing I look for in anyone who seeks a position of authority. I don't mean to be too hard on you, but your actions, which seem to have directly or indirectly caused a longtime and (in my mind) quality contributor to retire, showed very poor judgment. More disturbing is your apparent dismissal of it as "it's all in good fun". In my mind, telling someone to fuck off is not good fun (except in those circumstances between close friends in which both parties are having a laugh, which is quite certainly not the case here). Now, I'm sorry if this singles you out, and believe me I know there is a lot more of this sort of behavior going on. I think "it was pointed to in a coop" is the best explanation for now. Moreover, it was pointed to in the coop at a time when I decided I had sat and watched long enough and I thought it was time to try to help resolve a dispute in a calm and collected, as well as non-partisan, manner, which I sincerely tried to do (and I hope I was somewhat successful). The biggest problem of late, in my mind, is that small disputes get escalated until they become donnybrooks, and lines are drawn and sides are taken and the whole place comes apart at the seams. This time I wanted to stop that before it happened again. Sorry if it singled you out. I suppose I'll start getting a bit more involved in other cases now, if they come up, which no doubt they will. So I guess it won't specifically be you for long.
If you want a further explanation as to why you and why now, part of it is that this was a case where the well was not already poisoned by a huge escalating shitstorm, which was not true for, say, Human's recent case. Also, while I think Psygremlin went over the top with his demands, I did see a legitimate grievance. Moreover he presented it well, and by that I mean he mentioned specific actions and supplied appropriate diffs, which is better than cases where accusations are thrown around and you have to have been paying attention to what was going on already to know what the hell people were talking about. This is not personal, and I hope you don't take it personally, but you did admit you were acting childish, and were trolling. I hope you realize that such behavior is really unhelpful, particularly in this climate, and you will think a bit more before you act in the future. As for my comment that I feel less inclined to vote for you when board elections come up again, well, you have plenty of time to convince me otherwise. To quote the great Assfly, "I have an open mind about this." DickTurpis (talk) 02:36, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
I didn't take it personally, I just brought it here to ask you, because you seemed to have the strongest opinion on the matter while still being rational. I thought you would be able to express a coherent argument that wasn't full of butt hurt. And while I agree that Psygremlin presented actual links, I noted that each of his points was pretty much invalidated by being consistent with the wiki culture. Am I sorry that Kels left because I was being a childish brat? Well, yeah, I was playing around, and someone got hurt. There was no intent to drive her off, but I recognize that my actions still did, and I feel bad about that (but that doesn't justify holding me "guilty" in the matter, because I didn't intend to do it, nor did I expect that she would get so upset about it.) And honestly, this wiki is full of people shouting "fuck off" to various people and BoNs... that doesn't make my actions acceptable, but rather is intended to indicate culture and context.
I'd also like to just point out that I was honest about my actions. I admit when I've made an error.. of course, this doesn't stop my opponents or people who don't like me from then trotting it out and making a big deal about it. My only other choice is to deny it and lose all credibility, and that I think would be a worse trait to expect in authority than anything else. --Eira OMTG! The Goat be Praised. 03:01, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
You're right, there is too much "fuck off" shouting going on, and it really ought to stop. Yours got singled out largely to circumstances, but also because as a board member you really should try to behave better than the shit-stirrers. This goes for Human too, I realize, and I think I will have a chat with him sometime about trying to be more diplomatic. I'm glad you were able to admit mistakes; that's a sign of maturity often quite scarce. Of course, part of admitting mistakes is not making them again. Now, I don't want to take the fun out of the site, far from it, but there's fun and there's personal attacks. Some places (ahemwikipediaahem) use the term "personal attack" too loosely to the point where anything someone says that another person doesn't like is labeled "personal attack", and that's something that bothers me. You should certainly be able to criticize another persons actions, even in a somewhat insulting manner, but all this "fuck off" shit ain't kosher. Perhaps you really were kidding, but online it does not come across that way. So I'm willing to let bygones be bygones; not that it matters terribly as I'm just another asshole on a wiki. But should Kels return, and I hope she will, I'd like it if you didn't reignite the flame war. Even if she were to start something, take the high road, for the sake of the wiki. DickTurpis (talk) 03:23, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

You may have noticed. On the first DAY of the Somme over 10,000 British soldiers died. During the battle every square foot of land is estimated to have been hit by 60 shells, there were that many fired. My grandfather lived his entire life with German machine gun bullets in his back which he took during the battle. To see it described as 'veterans day' and have him link to some shitty xian blog site to explain something I have known for the past 40+ years annoys me more than I can begin to explain.

I've been using my judgment there. If I'm really quite sure it's a clear cut case I've been doing that on occasion. Also, if I'm going to be the 5th vote I don't bother adding my vote, I just delete or keep. The ones toward the bottom of the page seem to get less traffic, so I'm being more hesitant with those. I also take into account the points raised in the votes, if there are any, especially under "goat", which normally is a non-vote, but here is being used to express 3rd options at times, and should be taken into account. Please intervene[edit]

Several users have ganged up to constantly block me. It has gotten to the point where it is incredibly frustrating. Right now, my IP is blocked because of ArchieGoodwin and I'm having to rely on Tor. I can't unblock it because P-Foster removed my rights. Even before my block rights were removed, unblocking myself was futile since as soon as I did so, I would be blocked again. I'm sick of it. Don't ask me to roll with the punches. This has gone too far. Please intervene.--"Shut up, Brx." 03:31, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Looks like it was handled in my absence. If that's not the case let me know. Turpis 3:16 (talk) 04:43, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I've been framed for the recent series of vandal attacks, and have been blocked as a result, despite there being no real evidence against me. This is Brx writing from an account he created a while back, using a Tor node. I am innocent, and I provided my defense on the All things in moderation page (assuming P-Foster or Ace McWicked haven't removed it). I humbly ask that you restore my user rights and issue a moratorium against further block attempts. I understand that you don't want to wade knee deep in this drama, but I have no other choice but to come to you for assistance. My request for assistance naturally also extends to Blue and AD, but I have little time before I am blocked again and thus will be making only a single edit.

Additionally, an IP editor on RWW attempted to frame me with this edit, using the same edit summary I had used when leaving a comment to defend myself. I did not make that edit, and my browser doesn't remember edit summaries in that fashion.

Glad you liked it. Shows how editing Wikipedia for 8 years has prevented me from being able to see POV without thinking of "point of view". Like the initials CP and TK now as well. I think the worst was when I saw a car commercial on Hulu which kept freezing every few seconds. It said something about "conserv-" then froze, and I had in my head "-apedia" - half a second later it continued "-ing fuel..." I knew something was wrong with my habits then. 'Hipster guitar'[edit]

Got it from you. Will now use it extensively. Especially in front of the hipsters I know who have them. Scarlet A.pnggnostic 23:46, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Cool. I came up with that a little while back, and was worried I got scooped on it (same thing happened with finger binary; whenever I see someone doing it now I think "dammit, that's my thing!"). Anyway, I'd certainly love to see it catch on. So you've noticed hipsters' penchant for the instrument too, then. Glad it's not just me. DickTurpis (talk) 23:52, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
As mentioned elsewhere, the cheap plinky crap ones don't help. Scarlet A.pngbomination 00:13, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
True that. Though I have to admit part of my distaste for the instrument comes from an irrational aversion to its recent trendiness. I basically stopped wearing fedoras for the same reason. Well, I also got my hair cut short, so I no longer needed to constantly wear a hat to hide my unkempt hair and keep it out of my face. DickTurpis (talk) 00:31, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Having a backlash against the backlash against the mainstream is so mainstream. Scarlet A.pngtheist 07:47, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Dude, I've been using finger binary since 1966. Seldom need to go above 31, so only one hand, thumb is 1, little pinky is 16. Down on the desk or knee is 1, in the air is 0. Was a boy rocker from NYC showed me how, said he got it from a drummer. You may have your ukes; I find the ladies love a lazy sound on the Irish zouk. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 00:59, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Alright, so I wasn't alive in '66 so I'll have to give that to you. I did figure it out on my own in the mid 90s, and never saw anyone else use it until a few years back, so I like to be pedantically smug that I was clever enough to figure it out for myself, even though I've never been a math or computer guy. As for the bouzouki, great instrument, that. I've fiddle around with a few at specialty music shops, but can hardly claim to have played one. Cittern too. Is there a difference? Either kicks the ukelele square in the nuts. Oh, and if you're a true finger binary guy, well, 132 you, pal! DickTurpis (talk) 01:05, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Hey, if you honestly developed it independently, it's yours. I've only got one hand free, so 19 back at ya.
I think of a cittern as having a longer neck and a smaller body, sorta like a Greek zouk only with a flat back. The one hanging on my wall is a Trinity College octave mando with the body meeting the 12th fret, and I'm still getting used to it. Won't be able to really punch it until I learn my way around the frets better. I tend to use cello finger patterns on it rather than fiddle/mando ones, because of the scale length. There's a fellow in town with what he calls an Irish bouzouki that is midway between, with more neck showing and a smaller body than mine, but still a bigger box than a cittern. Next week will be GDAD week for me, if fortune smiles. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 01:58, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
I think I may have made this mistake of using Wikipedia to try to tell the difference between a cittern, bouzouki, octave mandolin, mandola, and whatever else basically has the same or similar string configuration. People who think Wikipedia gives shallow, simplistic answers to questions have never used the site. Fuck, I wish they did. Half the time you have to click a dozen hypertext links and spend hours reading related articles before you can even make sense of the first paragraph. I figured it was about time to actually learn about Higgs boson today, but the WP article doesn't exactly clear it up in a succinct manner. Anyway, I'm rambling now. I think it's the Irish bouzouki Andy Irvine plays, and that guy fuckin rocks. I do have qualms about it being an Irish instrument, when it's so clearly Greek, but I guess it really doesn't matter. Probably doesn't help that my introduction to the instrument was listening to the Monty Python Cheese Shop sketch when I was a kid. Oh well. 19, eh? You might have missed the reference. The single hand version of 132 is simply 4. Double Deuce. DickTurpis (talk) 02:20, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
No idea what Wikipedia says about a cittern. I remember seeing Dave Richardson with the Boys of the Lough Jeebus tap-dancing X on a pogo stick I'm old playing some thing with a bird carved on the headstock. That's my internal prototype of a cittern, and I'm sticking to it. When people ask me what that thing is in my hands, I tell them it's a bazerki.
Oh, and I got your 132 right here, pal. It's 128 and 4, symmetrical. Office Space happened to be on the tube this afternoon, and saw a kid doing that in the Chotchkie's parking lot. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 02:41, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Well, I saw Boys of the Lough back in around '92 or so, I'm guessing, and it seems you're a wee bit older than I, so you shouldn't feel too old (maybe?). I have the CD I bought at that concert in my collection somewhere. Not one of the best Irish traditional albums I own, but not bad by any means. Saw Patrick Street and the Chieftains around the same time, I guess, and was a bit more impressed with them. Good times. Anyway, I've seen Office Space a few times but don't recall that scene. I assume it's straight up double birds, no binary involved, eh? I think I'd remember 132. DickTurpis (talk) 02:51, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────It was Sanders Theater in Boston in the early 90s when I saw them last. I forget exactly who was on the roster then; pretty sure they still had Aly Bain and Cathal McConnell. Part of the patter included joking about their advanced age. About twenty years earlier they played a few times in the Ark in Ann Arbor, which is where I saw them first. Practically sat at their feet in that small room, lots of energy there. We like the Shetland fiddle tunes in this house; SWMBO can't get enough of Aly Bain's fiddling, and does a pretty fair cover of a lot of his tunes.

It was Jennifer Aniston's co-worker, the one with oodles of flair, who flipped them off two-handed in the parking lot, IIRC about the time Our Hero had made up his mind to do the time for his misdeed, and made his peace with Ms. Aniston's character. Quick question for you about the origins of iron working in sub saharan Africa if you can[edit]

Was it indigenous to the region or was it introduced from up north because I am debating this racist and I provided her this source. http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/hia.2005.0003 This was her response "I'm on the side of history, you however, aren't on anyone's side but your own, that's why you resorted to insults. "has an African origin dating to before 1000 BCE" Yah that really explains a lot. Your source doesn't provide evidence of smelting before 1,000 years. It just throws a figure out there and expects everyone to believe it. Your source doesn't offer a single foot note except for a linguist who is not an archaeologist and another archaeologist that says it's a hypothesis - which you have ignorantly accepted as fact. And just what did these sub-Saharan Negroids create with this iron? Nothing so much as a door hinge. One of the earliest smelted iron artifacts known is a dagger with an iron blade found in a Hattic tomb in Anatolia, dating from 2500 BC Cowen 2010

" there is no such thing as the white race. " Then I guess there is no such thing as the black race either. Damn, you must have been born without an optical nerve to not see the difference in race. No wonder you need glasses. Better double up on that prescription, four eyes. You don't come to my video and disrespect me and my people you ass." The video for this debate is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqEjTqoYNfw. I tried this source but I am not sure how reliable it is. http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/history_in_africa/summary/v032/32.1alpern.html Not only that I found this rebuttal "This is an interesting essay about the case for and against against iron working originating in sub-Saharan Africa. In essence it picks apart some of the very early dates, showing them to be more the product of wishful thinking and poor archeological practises. Most notably, dating a buried object in Niger from a potsherd found on the surface (very poor practise) and the common use of ancient charcoal to smelt iron giving false antiquity to artifacts, and the lack of calibration when using carbon 14 dating. It also points out the lack of prior technology that could could have lead to the discovery of iron working, notably that coppper working appeared almost at the same time, and that the pottery was fired in low temperature pit kilns that wouldn’t have produced iron accidentally. It also notes that the movement of iron technology appears to have been from North to South, with Egypt being one of the last Mediterranean cultures to adopt iron tools, with Turkey being the oldest known site. This is the reverse of what you would see of the technology was of African origin moving Northwards. So it looks like a Turkish origin for Iron working is still the most likely."
