Sysops should not be able to change the main page.[edit]

Sysops are not able to change the mission part of the main page, so why are they allowed to edit the most visited page on the entire site?𝗦𝗾𝗿𝘁-𝟭 talk stalk 06:59, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

  1. You never know when some troll comes by and vandalizes it. It's basically our job to make sure it stays clean as it is, and clean up any messes. Though I'm sure you already know that. Jake Holmesyell at me 13:23, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Alfred’s theory of subtraction proves that the noughts can beat the crosses[edit]

As the editors here show, they always choose the crosses, so they are more advantaged, but the noughts have a trick up their sleeve if they pull up and use this theory in action. What a discovery! Noughts and crosses rules! 103.108.94.9 (talk) 17:00, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Page idea[edit]

Hello everyone, I had an idea for a page to be written up if anyone was interested (sorry for asking, I just joined rationalwiki and I have no idea how to create a page yet), there's a crank website called serendipity.li and there's no article on it on rationalwiki which makes me sad because I think we've possibly found another Andrew schalfy if not worse, serendipity.li is a website with all manner of conspiracies (as well as being extremely pro putin and anti American) relating to 9/11, moon landings' Zionism, anti Israel the whole nine yards, it's internet traffic is tiny but there's a lot of articles if anyone was interested in having a laugh and writing on it, anyway bye for now, Bobby2shoes (talk) 02:24, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

There are a lot of sites like that, just the other day I saw a local kookmobile decked out in faux-military stylings, calling itself 'The Disinformation Response Unit', with a website URL stenciled all over it. I checked it out and it was a typical wingnut site, it is easy to put up a site with links to YouTube videos made by the usual suspects. There are far too many of these to merit articles, and none of them are notable unless they commit a mass shooting. And that's probably why it's not a good idea to give these people any grief; the Shafly's of the world are too high-profile to commit violence over a RationalWiki write up, but these lone wingnuts are already unhinged. But if you want to write it, a more formal discussion on its notability would be warranted. FairDinkum (talk) 05:28, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Overlink[edit]

Isn't linking to RationalWiki excessive to be done twice? Deadbeef (talk) 12:58, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

A suggestion regarding translation[edit]

Just a small suggestion; Perhaps we should begin using DeepL translate when translating things instead of Google Translate? DeepL seems to be much more accurate from what I've seen and experienced, even if it's still a bit jank around the edges. TheOneAndOnlyCirrusMan (talk) 23:28, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Random featured article[edit]

Any chance we can get some new ones? It feels like it's been the same perhaps dozen since I first discovered this site in about 2019. Is there a policy in adding new ones or something? KarmaPolice (talk) 12:16, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

They’re all gold quality articles, of which there aren’t that many. 𝒮𝑒𝓇𝑒𝓃𝑒 talk 13:18, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
I hate to say this, but I think you may be [partly] incorrect. Help:Cover stories. I am not sure if a page's Gold award automatically makes it a cover-candidate, but if it does it suggests that the main cramp is all the Golds which don't have an frontpage abstract. KarmaPolice (talk) 14:08, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Gold and cover articles are the same thing; see RationalWiki:Article rating#Gold/Cover-level stories. Plutocow (talk) 14:49, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
So... if someone writes some abstracts for Golds which currently don't have them, there shall be a wider rotation of frontpage featured articles? KarmaPolice (talk) 17:43, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
I believe that all the Golds should have cover abstracts already, but if you find one without one feel free to add it. Plutocow (talk) 21:04, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

A question regarding the ideology of RationalWiki[edit]

What is the ideology of RationalWiki, anyhow? It is obviously Culturally Progressive, that much I know, and that I find quite based, but what is its economic stance? Is it Liberal (Culturally Progressive, Economically Right), or is it something else?

While I am personally more Economically Left, in any case, I still find this wiki quite cool, and while I am well aware Wikipedia is, in general, a better encyclopedia, I do have to applaud this wiki's efforts on combatting Nutjobs and for making things easy to understand (something I have trouble with in regular Wikipedia, as. perhaps due to my ADHD, I have trouble parsing through exceedingly long chunks of text.)

TheOneAndOnlyCirrusMan (talk) 16:59, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

It's ideology is whatever is in line with its mission statement. There is really no ideological uniformity among the wiki's editors beyond that. Carthage (talk) 17:08, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough lol. TheOneAndOnlyCirrusMan (talk) 17:16, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
From what I can tell, if RW has an 'economic ideology' they'd be a Keynesian who is a 'critical friend' of capitalism. How critical and how fiscally conservative is all dependent on who is writing what bit, and to be honest economics is relatively RW's blind spot. KarmaPolice (talk) 17:28, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Pretty much. Carthage (talk) 17:53, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
I see I see, thanks for the explanations. TheOneAndOnlyCirrusMan (talk) 17:55, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

The mission is:

  1. Analyzing and refuting pseudoscience and the anti-science movement;
  2. Documenting the full range of crank ideas;
  3. Explorations of authoritarianism and fundamentalism;
  4. Analysis and criticism of how these subjects are handled in the media.

Various editors might have their own personall opinions and objectives.Bob"Life is short and (insert adjective)" 18:04, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

I am personally critical of how we generally cover the social sciences and the humanities. That's another relative blind spot of the wiki. If you browse my edit history or skim through my user page, most of my substantive contributions have to do with those two wider subjects, although I occasionally branch out. Carthage (talk) 18:07, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Another area of relative weakness is our coverage of non-Anglosphere or non-Western events and topics. Carthage (talk) 18:13, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
We have had a wide range of ideologies among active mainspace editors (anarchist, capitalist, centrist, libertarian). When ideology diverges substantially from the center, editors tend to be more specifically focused on mainspace areas of agreement. I.e., here is no litmus test on ideology other than anti-authoritarian/anti-fundamentalist. Bongolian (talk) 19:28, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Donation ribbon on the MP[edit]

When not signed in the figure on the Main Page is significantly lower than on other pages/when signed in - can the glitch be resolved.

Perhaps the goals should be ($3k), and then '(number of pages) when the campaign starts' (as several have been added)', followed by 'goal reached - but further donations welcome.' Anna Livia (talk) 20:38, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Can the band be 'stroked' again for the same reason as above. Anna Livia (talk) 19:00, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
