Birthers[edit]
So, according to you, the first birthers were Hilary Clinton supporters, eh? If you could find me some proof of this, that would be great, as it would further my suspicion that liberals are responsible for the hooey behind the birther movement as an attempt to embarrass the budding conservative movement.Conservative Punk 05:54, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
- Try some of the PUMA sites. The birther theory was popular amongst Clinton supports before the DNC after it looked like she lost, it was mostly an attempt to swing the Super Delegates her way. After the DNC it was picked up by fringe Republicans as an attempt to make people nervous about voting for Obama. - π 06:00, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Splitting the saloon bar.[edit]
As the discussion didn't attract many people, I figured I'd probably go ahead and split the Saloon Bar unilaterally (it gets the mobs attention quite nicely). Would this cause any issues with Pibot and archiving? Adding the Template:Talkpage/Pibot template should work but there could be an issue with searching subpages. The simple way to do it would be to search all the archives of all the "sub forums" (I.e, the saloon bar page itself would have the titles of the search bar, the bartop and the links to sub forums only) but I'm not sure if the pibot parameters would do that automatically. postate 13:58, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- If you leave the archive path parameter as it is, it will archive all the subpages to the one archive page. The search box searches all sub pages of the current page. There is a Template:Talkpage/PibotHidden that will archive a page without creating any on screen display. - π 14:06, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that a split would be a good idea, but I think we should have more discussion first. No need to do it unilaterally and send everyone into HCM. Tetronian you're clueless 23:25, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Armond, we really need to discuss this before unilateral splitting. How about a "sticky" thread on the bar about it? I'm sure the accumulated brainz here on this site can come up with a good way to do it so it doesn't dilute the energy that makes the SB what it is, while allowing us to perhaps slow down the archive rate a bit. ħuman 00:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
It is probably best to ask everyone first, however if you are going to do it, the best way would be to put:
{{Template:Talkpage/PibotHidden |algo = old(time) |maxarchivesize = 150K |counter = 44 |algo = old(96h) |archive = RationalWiki:Saloon bar/Archive%(counter)d }}
on each subpage. That way they will archive back to the main saloon bar's archive. - π 08:08, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that will work because of the counter.-- Nx / talk 08:10, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- It updates the counter itself, doesn't it? I haven't looked at the script in a while. - π 08:14, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah but if the counter is different on some pages, won't that cause problems? -- Nx / talk 08:17, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- It does only add one at a time, but it loops until it has archived the threads, so it should keeping going until it finds the next free archive. - π 08:18, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

My suggestion is to keep the Saloon bar for off-mission chat (food, music, rl anecdotes, etc.), have a separate but similar page for on-mission or topical chat (anything about cranks, blogging, also news stories, etc.) & a separate place for discussing possible changes to the site (technical, aesthetic, policy), a bit like WP's village pump.

Republicanism[edit]
Seeing as there's renewed talk of a referendum, what do you think? Personally I'm a bit of a fence-sitter, I can see the benefits of both sides but I'm ever so slowly drifting toward the republican side of the debate. Not that I have any aspirations of becoming president, but it would be nice for it to be possible to become such. I've usually steered more toward the monarchy side, but with Charles edging closer and closer to the throne...
To have a country that is supposed to be democratic while still not allowing its citizens to become head of state is a bit contradictory. The queen's role is purely ceremonial, and (AFAIK) she has personally only attended parliament twice. Her power to veto bills approved by both houses and the Governor General remains unused, while the Governor General is always hasty in giving passed bills the royal assent. It just seems like a waste of time, and the fact that we still have a Governor General at all seems to imply that we're not trusworthy enough to make our own decisions.
Although to her credit, she seemed to have her pen on the dotted line ready to sign the papers the last time we had a referendum on this topic. I guess the Brits have learnt attempting to tell other countries what they can and can't do is not a good idea. As for the flag, I'm not touching that with a 10-foot flagpole, particularly not with Australia day tomorrow - I don't want to be lynch mobbed by a pack of 95-year old RSL members bitching about how the youngun's today have no respect for their country. -Redbacknot Redneck 03:56, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I have always been pro-Republican, but more in the Roman collegiate tradition. The Governor General does not appear to do anything, so why not dispense with the office and replace it with nothing? In theory the counter-balance to the Prime Minister exists in the parliament itself. Other than that one occasion we have never needed the GG and to be honest that could have been dealt with if members had been willing to cross the floor and deal a no confidence motion. A few more checks in the system and we could get by without the office at all. - π 04:08, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well even then, the one time the GG actually did something, it was completely botched. I'm pretty certain that under the constitution, as soon as the motion of no confidence was passed against Fraser, Kerr should have dismissed him (if he didn't resign) and requested Whitlam form a new government. However, from the moment Fraser took the reins, the deal had already been made to trigger a double dissolution. You'd think the queen would be a bit more picky about who she chooses to represent her. -Redbacknot Redneck 04:17, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware of the later no confidence motion. I can't see how you can both pass the government's supply bill and dissolve parliament at the same time. Didn't Kerr spend most of the time pissed any way? Oh well, we all know it was a CIA plot. - π 04:33, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- In NZ there are occasional calls for Republicanism but nothing serious. Our last governer general actually took less of a ceremonial role and began to extend her reach into law. Specifically her caaling for the creation of supreme court as opposed to the Privy Council in London. Which was done. Acei9 04:48, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

- (EC*2, argh!) The way it was justified was that in dissolving parliament, he in effect nullified the motion of no confidence. This is the technicality used to explain why Whitlam was not reinstated as PM, because there was never
a war with Eastasiaa motion of no confidence. You're right though, it should have nullified both the motion of no confidence and the supply bill - but Kerr must have been in a hurry to get home and crack a tinny. And I shall have you know that the honorablepisstankSir John Kerr was not a CIA pawn, he was a pawn of these guys. -Redbacknot Redneck 05:03, 25 January 2010 (UTC)- I have never heard of the group before.

Ahhh! Your script is better than mine![edit]
I just spent ages writing a script to replace all messages/recent changes from TK with a generic "Troll begone" message, only to see you've already made a much neater one! I was visiting your monobook.js because the script I wrote was for GreaseMonkey and I was checking out your monobook.js trying to figure out how to put it on the site, but it works well enough in GM.
I was actually thinking of asking for a little assistance about half an hour ago. I was going to implement the ability to mouse over the "Troll begone" message to see what he'd written, but I can't see myself ever wanting to read one of his increasing desperate messages anyway.
Mine's rather clunky and slow, it digs through the whole DOM tree so it causes a wee bit of lag when the page first loads. I'd ask if I could nick your script to put in my monobook.js, but dammit, I spent ages on mine so I'm keeping it! -Redbacknot Redneck 09:15, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

- I know, and I will probably get counseling when all is said and done. Right now, I've been concentrating more on dousing any flames arising within my family and, especially, being there for my sister. Elsewise, the band is going well. We are going to start recording some shit in a month or two so we put that out, and have decided that, once we find an appropriate way to go about it, we will try to broadcast our practices live via internet feed. I'm not an expert on hiding revisions, but I think it might be less messy if we deleted the page, restored it with the revisions up to the 'libel' comment, and then added the rest of the comments as raw text. - Clearly this authoritarian fascism is turning this site into a juvenile 4chan. I'm leaving and never coming back. --The Emperor Kneel before Zod! 03:38, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Templates[edit]
Would it be permissible to bring over cite templates from Wikipedia?
Barring that, would it be permissible to re-engineer templates from WP?
Thanks!

- We are both cc-by-sa 3.0, so long as you link back to WP it is normally alright. We have never had much use for cite templates though, they tend to end up getting deleted. - π 12:55, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

- Don't get discouraged by the old folks. The idea was good, we are just not that big on formal citation, we aren't publishing journals here after all. - π 13:13, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
- Just look @ the fuss re image licences; we don't like that sort of thing. There are one or two templates nicked off wp that are very good but are never used - this site's a hobby site, not really a reference site. ContribsTalk 13:20, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
