WikiFactor[edit]
This may be of interest: here I showed the wikifactors for cp, rw, and ask. I think that the factor of 1000 is a little bit arbitrary, so I added a line for the identity... larronsicut fur in nocte 11:30, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

- What I wanted to say is that on the space of the measurable functions , X a measure space, Y metric space,
- is a distance. This distance inspired the h-index, and thus the WikiFactor. I suppose the multiplier of 1000 is used to calculate the WikiFaktor more easily, i.e., from glancing at the list of the first couple of most viewed pages. But it isn't esthetically pleasing, IMO... larronsicut fur in nocte 13:02, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Better search engine[edit]
Remember you asked me to install a search engine that's not retarded like the default one? Well, I just did that. I realized that the search engine only has to index the current revisions... which is a measly 150 megabytes. And we probably have enough memory to handle that. -- Nx / talk 19:29, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. Memory is cheap enough. Is it much trouble to run a wiki over more than one drive? - π 21:11, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know how it works, documentation is a bit vague. I hope that it doesn't transfer the whole index every time it's updated between machines. That would be a huge waste of bandwidth. It would be better to just transfer updates to another server, which then handles indexing and searching, and just returns the results to the main server (or the user directly, the search is actually located here: http://rationalwiki.com:8123/search/rationa1_wiki/test) -- Nx / talk 22:04, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- You gonna do a "Help" page for that, NX? 21:26, 16 March 2010 (UTC) ContribsTalk
- You type stuff into the search box and it finds it better. There is not much you can write about it. - π 21:28, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- It's part of the talkpage template, just add search=yes. This was available before, but it sucked. Now it prioritizes section headers and it returns more relevant results. (the example search I linked to was what prompted me to do this - the old search engine was simply useless for searching the saloon bar archives) -- Nx / talk 22:04, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Pibot not working[edit]
Did you change anything in Pibot recently? It's not archiving my talkpage, but when I ran it manually it worked, but threw out errors:
ERROR: Unexpected response from wiki server. 302 (Found)
-- Nx / talk 11:01, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't touched it in ages, I'll have a look. - π 11:58, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- Isn't it funny that the one person it borked on is the one person here who might understand how it works? ħuman 08:47, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I only asked if Pi did something to it recently. It's strange because a) it doesn't do this when it runs the normal archiving (you see, pibot runs twice, once for the ugly green box, and once for
{{Talkpage/PibotHidden}}
) b) 302 isn't actually an error and c) when I ran it manually it worked despite the error. So I'm waiting for its scheduled run to see if it fails again. -- Nx / talk 09:29, 27 March 2010 (UTC)- Sorry, I thought "ERROR" meant error, but I don't know my script returns like I should. I thought 302 was Delaware, anyway. ħuman 09:52, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Ok, now it's throwing the same 302 error on other pages too (maybe I just didn't notice it last time), so that can't be it. I've edited the shell script that runs pibot to only run it once with both templates as parameters, maybe it'll work now. -- Nx / talk 09:59, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

- You mentioned giving me the benefit of doubt (and then deleted that line again). Ironically, that was my stance on this wiki during my first few days; but you guys proved my bad feelings wrong and showed me you're more reasonable than I initially gave you credit for. MediaWiki is Cc-by-sa[edit]
No, it's GPL [2], but I think you're allowed to license screenshots of GPL software under whatever license you want - of course this becomes blurry when the screenshot contains e.g. interface art that's licensed under e.g. cc-by-sa, so I'm not sure. -- Nx / talk 11:28, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well I suppose it is a derivative work, if that makes a difference. - π 11:36, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- Blender.org says:
"To enable documention (like books) with author copyrights, screenshots of GNU GPL applications are considered to be licensed as an author wishes. However, this only goes for the screenshot as a "whole", as an illustration of how the software works. Individual items in a screenshot (such as icons) are still GPL."

- To display a specific page, use page=number, e.g. (you can use the same parameters you would use with an image, e.g. thumb):
[[File:Court ruling regarding case against Obama.pdf|page=2|thumb]]
- To link to it without displaying it, put a colon before the name, e.g.:
[[:File:Court ruling regarding case against Obama.pdf|Court ruling regarding case against Obama]]
Court ruling regarding case against Obama
- Thanks, I have moved the section to Obama citizenship denial as it fits better there. Birthers is a fork article as it was getting quite long. - π 00:15, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

- Liquidthreads breaks talkpages down into pages, and when you move a thread it leaves a notice with the link to where it has been moved (e.g.), so moving threads to an archive would be kinda pointless, as it would still leave a bunch of placeholder threads. -- Nx / talk 01:20, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Cover category on talk pages[edit]
MediaWiki has a bug in that category membership is sometimes not updated properly when the template that adds the category is changed. To fix it, edit the page and click save - no new revision will be recorded, since you didn't change anything, but it will run the category update (even though it shouldn't do that...go figure) -- Nx / talk 15:41, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Cover story editnotices[edit]
Please move them out of mediawiki space and under Template:Editnotices as described on Template:Editnotice load, so we don't use two different systems. Keep in mind that Template:Editnotices are also displayed when you view the source, so you should either change the message (e.g. this page is protected because it's a cover story on the main page etc.) or not display anything when viewing source. Also also it would make sense to add the notice at the top of Andrew Schlafly to the editnotice (but keep it on the article too, since it explains why the article is devoid of humer) -- Nx / talk 15:12, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oh and, they're not displayed on subpages, unlike the editnotices in mediawiki space. -- Nx / talk 15:13, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Laffer[edit]
The current US tax system is an embarrassment. I graphed what people pay in fed taxes a year or two ago, and due to the 15% payroll tax, it's almost a "flat tax". At 10k you pay 30%, at 1,000k you pay under 40%. It's a fucking crime. PS, I archived that thing you kept restoring on my talk page. ħuman 03:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- PS, the people making 1M also can afford fancy accountants to dodge taxes; also also, your talk page is upside down. ħuman 03:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

- Indeed, since I pulled the number out of my ass. Nice work. ħuman 03:27, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- The 70% top tax bracket is close to right according to the Swedish study. The biggest problem with the US is how far down the tax burden is. The top tax bracket should not be 38% for people earning over $250,000. It is not a bad mark though. People over $500,000 should be paying of the order 43%, people over a million, more than 50% and people earning in the tens of millions 70%. That way you can afford to remove or shift some of the lower tax brackets. - π 03:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, and people making 20k should not be paying 30% - plus local taxes. Amazing we haven't edit conflicted over there, a real relief to me and you I'm sure also. Since I spend 5 minutes at a time, what was the word at Awk, denigrating your English? :) ħuman 03:34, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- Since I spend 5 minutes at a time, what was the word at Awk, denigrating your English? That was a joke. I think our tax rate could do with some smoothing at the bottom. I am sure we had a 7% rate once for people under 22k a year. And I think there was a 52% once as well. - π 03:39, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- I know it was a joke, you replied as such. I just couldn't remember the exact phrase and can't be arsed to go to the aRk again today to chase the exact quote. The 5 minute thing was how long I've been keeping the laugher curve article open to edit. People under 22k shouldn't pay any damn taxes at all, they are barely getting by. OK, sure, 10%. But only if 700-gajillionaires pay a genuine 70%. Oh, have we even talked about the "capital gains tax" in the US yet? It's like 20% or sumthin, and that's the tax on people who make their money by playing with huge piles of money. ħuman 03:49, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- In Australia capital gain get added to your income for tax purposes. - π 03:51, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- And in US they want to cut it. Keep in mind we have an exemption for profit on homeownership as long as you buy another house. Also there'e a one-time exemption for taking the money and banking it. ħuman 04:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- Our exemption for home ownership is if you owned it for more than 13 months and I think there might also be a residency requirement. - π 04:07, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- I think we have similar provisions. Basically it to not tax people on the increase in value of their homes, which probably makes sense, since most of that gain is inflation anyway. ħuman 05:05, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

English-Only Movement[edit]
You make the demand that this is a community project, and thus my opinion doesn't matter, yet you revert saying "I like it like this". Hypocrisy, welcome to it. Braille is not another language, it's simply a different mode of writing English. Why not include English written in Cyrillic, or Kanas, or any other Alphabet/Abjad/orthographic system? Because it's just English. --Eira omtg! The Goat be praised. 02:41, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- I was taking offence to your attitude that you can override the opinions of the other 3 or 4 people that have commented and said they liked it because you (the sole person against) think your argument it better and you are a sysop. That might be the way things work at Wikipedia, but that does not hold water here. - π 03:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- There were not 3 or 4 other people... there was you. It's a wiki... content is added, removed, modified in an editorial combat... I think it's kind of retarded though, that you think you know how things work around here better than a janitor. --Eira omtg! The Goat be praised. 03:59, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

- I'm perfectly fine that he knows what's going on, and has been around more than I have, particularly recently... my point to him is that his arguments apply entirely exactly to his own position as well. So, if you're going to tell someone "you don't get to dictate what this article is", then don't turn around and say "I like it this way." You just invalidate your own argument right from the start... --Eira omtg! The Goat be praised. 05:32, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- You do make a valid point. But a reminder to you that, just because someone is a sysop doesn't mean they are a special kind of editor. But, back to topic, from an outsider's perspective, if there is a disagreement about how an article should be and you guys are reverting eachother, the talkpage is a good place to sort out your differences. - Talk page debate was started the same time as I made my original edit. I put in all the details about why I dropped the Braille, and binary. Pi described it as a "non sequitur". And I still do not see the worth of either the Braille or binary, because they're simply a cipher of English... why not rot-13, or Caesar cipher? The point is to be ANTI-English in the article... it was the whole joke. If you all want to self-destruct the joke, then whatever... mob rule... but seriously... --Eira omtg! Rudd[edit]
What's going on over there? Rudd is facing down his own party? Acei9 22:54, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't been following it, but it seems pretty fucking weird. Rudd is still more popular than Abbott, Labour is still polling better that the Libreals, but I was watching TV last night and they cut to parliament to showed Julia Gillard walking into the Prime Minister's office with Steven Faulkner, a real party heavy-weight. They are going into vote now; Julia seems to have the big factional leaders around her. - π 22:59, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmmm I always assumed Rudd was popular. Acei9 23:08, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- He was popular enough with the electorate, he was slipping a bit, but that had more to do with policy than himself. Gillard has been a support of every policy, so I don't see what changing to her is going to achieve, I doubt she is as popular outside of party insiders. - π 23:11, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

- The expression is "black balled" referring to the old Greek tradition of voting with black and white balls being placed in urns, often used when voting to exile someone. Are you creating a fork of the discussion and to what ends? You seem to be deliberately filibustering this whole discussion. - π 12:14, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- :-) Thanks Pi. I was worried that if I keep posting on that page I might be accused of something like "filibustering". The concept is very strange to me, to be applying to a wiki. How is it possible that no matter what I do I am preventing everyone else from doing something, because I suppose they have to read what I write? Why don't you pretend I don't exist if you are trying to get something else done? Lumenos (talk) 12:21, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

- It seems that if we had policies that had "widespread" support (in atheist or skeptic subcultures) that we might be able to overthrow any corrupt bureaucrats, if not here then we might convince some to start a new wiki or post to a different one (perhaps Wikipedia, Wikinfo, or Wikiversity). ~ That blind moron (talk) 13:55, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- No. - π 13:47, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Might I suggest policy? ~ That blind moron (talk) 13:41, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Can't sorry. When I realised my dick wouldn't fall off just because I didn't have any wiki powers, I gave them up. I think I went some way to fucking this site up. I thought by making everyone sysops I would neutralise their powers, but it just made crats more important and they are a lot harder to get rid of. - π 12:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- I am still waiting on you to transfer me sysop powers, like you had agreed to earlier. 86.45.201.141 (talk) 13:52, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- I don't have any sysop powers to transfer to you. - π 13:58, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Who are you? ~ That blind moron (talk) 13:56, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- He is our troll. - π 13:58, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- What do you mean by troll?
- My list of names associated with trolling: MarcusCicero, Neveruse, Cheerleader not Troll. ("Names" may not be exact.)

- Neveruse is not a troll. By troll I mean goes around offending community members for his own entertainment/to cause them discomfort (the two are not mutually exclusive). - π 14:18, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Do you mind if I copy your comment to Lumeniki? I like to gather people's personal "definitions" or "examples" so I can figure out what they mean. ~ That blind moron (talk) 15:24, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
