Very sorry to hear that, now get back to the books

Hey RA. Speech time. I don't think I've EVER had a serious moment here on RW, so this is the first one. You're young, and supposed to be studying. You have energetically thrown yourself into RW, but many of us here are not like you. I, for one, am a hell of a lot older than you, self-employed and have the luxury of having the time to focus on RW. You don't. These are crucially important days for you, and how you do in your studies matters a LOT to your future. RW will not die without you, and even if it did, it wouldn't matter much, if at all, in your life, in the long term. So - ignore us, we'll miss you, but I for one would rather you turn into a useful, educated member of society. Don't become beguiled by what is an unrealistic virtual intarweb replacement for what is a very real world. And now, back to the books, and enjoy it! Honestly, these are the best days of your life, don't fuck them up by listening to me and Human rabbit on at each other. DogP 01:49, 31 March 2008 (EDT)

Fixed Links?

Hey RA, hold up there with the fixed links - why are you doing that? All it does is freeze the refs in time. You may well have a reason, but what is it? DogP 16:13, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

It's standard practice to use static links. I know "standard format" won't satisfy you, so the "good" reason is that when someone reads the Wikipedia article, there is always a chance that they will find it at a moment when it's vandalized or when someone is in the middle of a rewrite, and it looks really ugly. Addtionally, there is always a possibility that the "intereresting" Wikipedia article will be butchered so it's not interesting anymore, or that the specific fact you're citing is removed. All these possibilities are par for the course on Wikipedia, hence the static links. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 16:18, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

The missionary position

My entry was meant only partly in jest. Why do you think it is called "the missionary position"? Along with bans on singing and dancing, and almost anything else that was fun, missionaries insisted their heathen friends would go to hell if they didn't stick to the first page of the Kama Sutra (actually I think it's page 46, but you know what I mean). Much like the insistence by evanagelical missionaries (and the Bush administration) today that abstinence be used in place of condoms to prevent AIDS in Africa. I stand corrected (that's on page 52 of the KS, I think). Thanks for the link to Cecil. I seem to remember some pretty harsh criticism of missionary work in Somerset Maughaum's short stories, but I'll have to do more research if I want to bring this up again. I hope RA is a strong and positive individual. If there is one thing that puts off studying, is when other people tell you to study. RA is clever (probably. Are you, RA?), so he knows that he must study. Dogged's persistence is deletery, unless RA is someone who must be kicked in the a. to get motivation. I was not. Tell me to study and I avoided it for a week just to show off. Editor at CPfor a change 15:54, 4 April 2008 (EDT)
RA claims to suffer from OCD - he should apply it to his schoolwork. Just concentrate on showing AS how much better public schools are than homskull. SusanG 16:04, 4 April 2008 (EDT)
Well, IN THAT CASE, RW should be banned. OCD and RW plus CP, that's a deadly combination! PalMD should publish an article on the dangers of RW+CP to people suffering from OCD. And then let it peer review by AS. Editor at CPfor a change 16:24, 4 April 2008 (EDT)

Should know better

In a dispute with any other editor, you should explain your ideas about the changes on its talk page in flawless Korean instead of simply reverting. Even Wikipedia doesn't allow "reverting a reversion". But when a sysop, having higher editorial authority, reverts something - you ought to assume good faith in his part. He may know something you don't.

Remember, the idea is to create a lulzworthy encyclopedia, not to "have a discussion". You can always start a debate. Fox 13:49, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

Eh, apologies for not being as prompt as I'd like to be with answering my messages. Regarding your edit, I didn't know it was intended to be constructive, so I assumed it was a prankster adding it for kicks. Questions

I'd been quietly watching the "developments" but to be honest I assumed it was really just a lulzy thing, a "smoke and mirrors" exercise to generate paranoia over nothing. But now I don't know. And because of the amount of behind the scenes stuff and manipulation that goes on, I don't know whether Bob's expressed concerns or even yours are real, or just part of the show. In that respect, even if it is a psychological stunt, it has been 100% successful already. I know that if such a course of action as is being insinuated was to be put into practice, I wouldn't want any part of it. For me, it means I'm going to have to disassociate myself from the whole thing. Meh, there were too many TK socks here anyway :D Fox 04:04, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

I don't know whether you're still online RA, but I guess you can read this later if you've disappeared. In my opinion, it's pretty unlikely that the Ides group would plan anything semi-legal in the midst of RationalWiki, as it could easily go wrong. When has this kind of thing ever been planned in broad daylight before? It seems obvious to me that the purpose of this whole thing was to trick CP into thinking we might stage an attack. He wanted potentially identifying information to his person removed from his talk page, especially since he's interested in getting involved in the whole anti-MP thing. Since it's quite a way down in the history, I couldn't get rid of it without getting rid of quite a bit of other stuff. Is there an issue with that? --מְתֻרְגְּמָן שְׁלֹום

Nah, I only wanted an explanation for what struck me as a Conservapedia-esque action. Thanks for doing so. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 12:55, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Red links!

You should've moved it to my userspace. Shame on you. :(— Unsigned, by: 132.132.132.132 / talk / contribs 14:23, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Odd. Despite your mystical invocation of shame, I don't feel any. Could you try saying it louder? --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 14:28, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
Sure. Shame on you, O mis-speller of "feel". Forsooth, art thou typing with your nose??— Unsigned, by: 132.132.132.132 / talk / contribs 14:30, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
I feel a sudden upwelling of shame within me. I think it's working. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 14:34, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
I'll type louder. Slightly more serious question: what's with those doublespaces??? — Unsigned, by: 132.132.132.132 / talk / contribs 14:37, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
That's what I was taught. It also makes it easier to discern sentences from each other when editing. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 14:40, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
People who learned to type using typewriters use two spaces after a period. Computers put those two spaces (or what is deemd to be the correct spacing) in automatically after a period when you're using a proportional font. Rational Edthink! 14:42, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
Is this an editing policy? I thought I had it all down!— Unsigned, by: 132.132.132.132 / talk / contribs 14:43, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
What's a "proportional font"? --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 14:47, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Have you ever noticed that if you try to line up a column of words in the middle of a page without using a tab that it is impossible to line them up? A proportional font adjusts the spacing differently between each character or punctuation mark to look "good". So a capital "G" is a lot wider than a capital "I". On the other hand, when you type using pure text (like in a text editor or non-html email), the letters each take up exactly the same amount of space and they will line up in a column in the middle of a page without a tab.
