Bridge[edit]

Hey, I know this guy! Now, where's that confounded bridge? humanbe in 12:51, 2 June 2007 (CDT)

Can I take it to the bridge? --The hardest working editor in wiki business
That depends - can you get the bassist to walk over to IV? humanbe in 14:03, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
You gonna let me get up and do my thing? Uh. Spica 16:08, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
This whole site is a trollsite, isn't it? Designed to capture CP users? HeartGold tx 16:06, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
Mostly it's randomness, far as I can see, but I'm hoping we grow out of it and into some real debunking soon. --Kels 16:11, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
We'll still be saying that to new users in five years. humanbe in 17:07, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
I'm slowly starting to get down to some serious work. I'm gonna expand atheism and work on the whole stupid breast cancer/abortion thingy.--PalMD-yada yada 17:10, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
I've got a couple of "bedrock" pieces I want to do, might start tonight. At least that'll be a beginning. --Kels 17:14, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, if I don't drink myself into a stupor, drive to the hospital, and try to remove a uvula, I'm gonna do the same.--PalMD-yada yada 17:16, 2 June 2007 (CDT)
How'd that "serious bedrock work" work out for you guys? I drank myself into a stupor and apparently created such useful and informative articles as Fun:Carlos Mencia... if the logs are to be believed. humanbe in 12:29, 3 June 2007 (CDT)

..An article about me :) -ĬŴΣĐĝё 01:23, 3 June 2007 (CDT)

Actually I thought I was describing somebody else when I wrote this - but I can see where you're coming from. :-) --Bob_M (talk) 06:30, 3 June 2007 (CDT)

but...but....trolls have to eat too. How about all his little trollings back at home? Poor guy, he's just trying to make a living and keep "food on his family" (as george would say)...poor troll :( Instead of starving them, just carpool them over to CP and let them eat their fill. If they're hungry enough, they'll eat the skunks and rodents over there. Remember, a good troll is a terrible thing to waste. --Sproutky 09:36, 25 August 2007 (CDT)

Title[edit]

This now is Don’t feed the Troll‎; is this deliberate? (and the post is a beta test)--Bobbing up and down 01:05, 11 September 2007 (MDT)

If that's the only error we find, we're in pretty good shape. The rest of the site looks intact to me. humanbe in 01:07, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Aw, there's no place like home :) Nice fucking work, Trent!!! humanbe in 01:09, 11 September 2007 (MDT)

Removal[edit]

I've removed this from the article because I don't understand what it's getting at and I think it may confuse others.--Bobbing for apples 05:53, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

Someone had to... humanUser talk:Human 01:59, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

I think this resulted from someone transcluding this entire page on a new troll's user's talk page, and me then trying to add the welcome template by clicking on a link from this page, not their page. Maybe we should put some "includeonly" tags (or whatever works) in this article if people are going to use it as a template as well (to get rid of the see also section, which creates a spurious edit link)? humanUser talk:Human 13:22, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
I have removed the following paragraph because it is covered in the "caveat".--Bobbing for apples 13:38, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

'It must always be remembered however that the accusation of “Troll” is easy to make and most controversial posts are not the work of trolls, but of people who genuinely have differing opinions.'

Or would it be better to remove the caveat as removing this has messed up the flow a bit.
I removed the next word, I think that clears it up? humanUser talk:Human 13:45, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

Troll - (vb)[edit]

troll : to walk about (esp. looking for trade)

Polari (also seen as 'Palare') is a gay slang language, which has now almost died out. It was more common in the 1960's when gays had more need of a private slang. When I started to research Polari, it was difficult to find any written material about Polari as what little used to exist was out of print. However, in the last few years, more and more people have been finding out about it, and several web sites and magazine articles have been written.

A short guide to trolling[edit]

I don't know how many others here have activity trolled but I confess that I have in the past. It's really good fun. First of all you post something which is contrary to the ethos of the group. It's best not to write something you actually believe in, as then you yourself may become emotionally involved in the outcome. In fact, it's best to post something you completely disagree with as it's easier to laugh off the insults your post generates.

In any event, your post should make a few enemies. Identify these enemies, cultivate them, insult them, abuse them, really annoy them. What happens next is that whatever you post (sensible or not, logical or not, helpful or not) will get a negative reaction from these enemies. This is because many people don't think too much about what they say (or write) but automatically disagree with people they don't like.

This is great because you can make the most innocent of statements and guarantee disagreement. You can say what you like and the result will be abuse. When that happens you can appeal to others to back you up and you are on a roll. The trick is to keep some people annoyed while making enough sense to get casual users on your side.

Logging in in the morning and finding lots of people talking about you is a fantastic ego boo. It really sets you up for the day. I should point out that I no longer do this, but I do understand where the people who do this come from. It's also clear why the motto "Don't feed the Troll" works.--False Flag (talk) 17:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

real motives[edit]

all trollery is about beating people up. sometimes you punch, sometimes you stab, sometimes you troll. sometimes you beat the people you love, sometimes the people you hate. there's never a plan. the motive is always either depression or intoxication. there's never a complex psychological motive. should the world be beaten up? idk --Swedmann (talk) 22:27, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Derogatory label for those who call someone a troll and then "feed" them[edit]

Why can't we have a derogatory term for someone who calls someone a troll and then "feeds" them a bunch of nonconstructive insults? My suggestion was to call them crabs but after doing mostly crabb'n on me talk page, SusanG has ordered me not to edit mainspace and an IP address removed the crab definition here.— Unsigned, by: Lumenos / talk / contribs

I did NOT order you not to edit mainspace! Even if I had, my orders are as wind in the reeds around here. 18:06, 28 June 2010 (UTC) }SusanG Toast
Is it possible to call someone a troll and not feed them? isn't acknowledging that they're a troll feeding them? Like, isn't ANYTHING really feeding them, other than not doing anything at all? Quaru (talk) 18:08, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Troll WěǎšěǐǒǐďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 18:13, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Sadly, Q, you are right. It is a truism that the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. Like Ken at CP, trolls feed on attention. Paradoxically, all the other CP sysops manage to frustrate Ken by completely ignoring him so that the only pleasure he gets is RW's derision. Unfortunately, some people here just can't help themselves.  Lily Inspirate me. 18:21, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Narrowness[edit]

This article seems to only reflect MC. I can say from experience that I never trolled to be important but rather because it was amuzing to watch you and others disassemble. Ex-Troll Cheerleader (talk) 23:52, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, there's more variety. On a forum I used to active on, two of the people I liked the most were definitely trolls. Most of what they were doing was about having a laugh at people who took themselves far too seriously or became hopelessly pedantic in discussions of things that really didn't matter much. Imagine an argument over who was the best captain of the Enterprise and you kind of get the idea. Expand away, but probably worth punting some ideas here in to the talk page if you're considering large-scale changes. Concernedresident omg!!! ponies!!! 23:57, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Pathetic[edit]

Wow. Just........wow! Can’t you see how fucking stupid you all are? This article looks like it was written by a mentally retarded coke addicted whore who was masturbating to pictures of dead babies!

Its just too bad you faggots are too retarded and inbred to read, because if you could then maybe you would understand why I keep laughing at you!

Liberal warrior's edits[edit]

I think Liberal Warrior's edits actually make a valid point, even though the English is bad and the way the first one is worded is rather humourously self-referential:

  • Unnecessarily using profanity like motherfucker, muthafucker, cocksucker, fuck, fucker, cunt, dick, pussy, ass, dickhead, fuckhead, retard etc.
  • Uploading images of naked people and posting those image in the website

I think both are real traits of people just trying to be disruptive (I don't like the word troll, since too often it is just used as a term of abuse against those who merely have different opinions.) Maybe a better way of wording the same two points would be:

  • Excessive use of profanity, especially when done in a hostile fashion
  • Uploading pornographic or disturbing images for the purpose of causing shock or offence

With regard to the first point, I don't think a bit of profanity is a problem, just when it is excessive or hostile. --(((Zack Martin))) 07:51, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

If those are defining points, then Ace and I are two of the worst trolls on this site. Especially Ace. LW's edits were simply lame and unnecessary examples of what he was writing. ħumanUser talk:Human 08:26, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Good post! ThunderkatzHo! 20:46, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

It's always refreshing to see that people would rather be dicks than see the site well-supported. Especially considering the removal of two of the most unconstructive templates on the site. Occasionaluse (talk) 20:52, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Alternative ways to deal with trolls[edit]

The first part of the article says that the only way to deal with trolls is to ignore them. However the part titled Alternative ways to deal with trolls tells us how an individual can have "fun" provoking the troll. Just saying is all. --BobSpring is sprung! 08:13, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

OK, I've cut that bit, as it's under "troll baiting" anyway. It's below if anybody wants to see it:
  • Sometimes ignoring trolls doesn't work as one naive user might respond to their posts anyway and this is usually enough to make them stay. You can have an admin ban the troll but sometimes they aren't in violation of the terms of service or they could simply make another account. So there are times when dealing with trolls means giving them attention and beating them at their own game. This method may take a long time but it can be fun in its own ways if you've got a thick skin. First of all don't show any signs of anger in your posts, act as if you are enjoying every moment they spend on the forum, you might not have to act at all! Secondly turn their statements against them, for example if they say "I am laughing very hard at you" respond with something like "If you are laughing then it is probably because your mother has been tickling you you basement-dwelling fucktard."
As I said it seems to contradict the rest of the article.--BobSpring is sprung! 16:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
One of the best ways to get a troll out of your board is by muting him. He is the only one to see his own messages, but when he gets no responses, he leaves soon enough, often not even bothering with a double nick. When a double nick is made, forum rules are usually broken.77.75.207.235 (talk) 13:08, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

May I suggest[edit]

That we move this to RationalWiki space? It's missionality is questionable. It's more of a site policy thing, no?--User:Brxbrx/sig 17:53, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

no[edit]

The talk page might be RW specific, and parts of teh article might be as well... but i think the main article about what a troll is, and why dftt is a goodish defense is a mainspace "internet" article.Pink mowse.pngEn attendant Godot 18:05, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Whoever wrote that one sentence[edit]

"universe-cancer, and time shenanigans, experts recommend such methods as closed causal loops of money-wiring, owning omnipotent dogs, and baking goods empire-acquired exclusive ICP previews"

Good work.

After I read "awkward hateflirting" I was completely prepared for anything but non-sequitur, so that totally caught me off guard. What impresses me the most is that I checked whether the randomized noun and adjective filler was used, but turns out it was all conceived non-randomly. Makes me question whether it's not actually non-sequitur and all obscure references.

This is actually an elaborate reference to a webcomic called Homestuck. Many of its main characters are trolls in both species and behavior. 76.4.254.80 (talk) 20:37, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Suggestion 2[edit]

Get the trolls to annoy each other (variant of The Man who was Thursday) 82.44.143.26 (talk) 16:37, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

What to feed the trolls[edit]

Divert them with 'a choice selection of weird-shaped fruit and veg' (counting as at least one of their internet-five-a-day). 82.44.143.26 (talk) 16:29, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Let them eat cake (do a search on 'the internet tubes' for ideas) - as it is difficult to troll at the same time (especially as they are likely to get 'galloping negative-E numberitis' as a result and/or other problems). 82.44.143.26 (talk) 18:11, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Trolling Trolls[edit]

It's a little tricky to do but i have found it fun to troll trolls by acting like you took their bait but set a trap for them. Its also fun to tease grammar nazis too even though i can be one at times :P --Ultimate SlimeRimuru Slime.png 17:35, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

The irregular verb 'I am a stickler for accuracy, you are a pedant, they are a grammar nazi' applies here. :) Anna Livia (talk) 08:59, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Weev mention[edit]

How would one suggest dealing with the mention of weev here? Given that he is now "supposedly" an actual Neo-nazi - even though he's jewish... gawd, I love who the tech community rallies around sometimes! Anyways - he's publicly spatting with Richard Spencer on his blog now - seems like he's gone "all in" http://weev.net/ Nycskeptic2017 (talk) 07:18, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
