Thanks for your work on that. The guy who wrote a lot of it, as well as other Christian U. articles, has his heart in the right place, but can't write for shit. Hope you want to fix up his other contributions over the medium term. Peace. AgingHippie (talk) 22:49, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Science programs at Young Earth Creationist colleges[edit]

How long had that AFD been up for discussion please? Seems like this was a rapid deletion decision with few editors posting either way on the decision? If I am wrong, apologies --TheroadtoWiganPier (talk) 16:44, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

It's been three or four days. I was actually surprised at the response received during that time. I haven't been able to find any guidance on how long an AfD should be up before concluding. Recently I've seen other articles vaporized after a very short discussion. I hope I haven't acted too hastily in this case. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 16:51, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
I don't think you acted too hastily. Three votes to delete, none to keep, and a goat comment. Along with the nominator, delete votes came from AgingHippie and Spud, both solid responsible RW denizens of long standing. Reviving it is a possibility, but without a metric boatload of work (unlikely to happen, IMO) it will still be a feeble article. Alec Sanderson (talk) 17:08, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Isn't your vote on AFD, Dallas Baptist University for delete?[edit]

Hi Cosmikdebris,

You voted Merge/redirect in RationalWiki:Articles for deletion/Dallas Baptist University, but your reason suggests a simple delete. Or am I misunderstanding you? ScepticWombat (talk) 12:55, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

I apologize for the confusion. I'll clarify my vote on the Afd page now. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 13:05, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
No need to apologise, I see what you mean now. ScepticWombat (talk) 13:31, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

All hail, Steve Quayle![edit]

That's some fine work on our new Steve Quayle article! Th hug.gif And bronze quality right off the bat to boot. Big props!

I know it's not much, but please accept this lit meme as a sign of my appreciation.

All the best buddy, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 19:55, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks very much! That article essentially wrote itself. Quayle is one of those personalities that just keeps giving and giving, a well of fascinating nuttiness. I believe I've heard him on shortwave before but didn't make the connection until I saw the paragraph mentioning him in the Coast to Coast AM article. Regards, Cosmikdebris (talk) 19:59, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
You're most welcome!
Interesting... There sort of is something to that most exquisite of nuttery, no? Not as in, any truth to it. But precisely as a skeptic, it can really be fascinating (atleast in my experience).
I mean, when some cranks start preaching — by analogy — it's a bit like observing some rare animal just doing its thing from the perspective of an enthusiastic zoologist... I dunno.
Like human beings generally, cranks are a varied bunch. Some of them seem so tragic... But some of them make me laugh instead! Naturally, some of them are just hate-spewin'. And some of them can even be genuinely quirky at times. If nothing else, being an "encyclopedist" of the fringe is very interesting, that much has to be said. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 20:14, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

A case study[edit]

Recent example: just yesterday, I actually got stuck watching this guy. I shit you not, that's his actual YouTube/Twitter photo. He chose that picture.

Daniel Ott, aka "The Cosmic Cowboy". Ever heard of him? I hadn't, until yesterday. He has a real old-school green ink website too, here. I ran into him as a part of researching GWEN towers.

What's even better is the photo he uses in this video, however (and you don't need to press play; just look at the thumbnail):

If you can call it a photo, that is — 'cause if so, I don't know what planet that picture's supposed to be taken on.

And seriously, the hat and everything? It's just... Wow.

I mean, comedians like Tim & Eric do their very best to try and emulate that real vibe of, you know, the American public access show that God forgot... But when you run into it in real life, it always beats the parody somehow. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 20:53, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

I have nothing good to add.gif-ⅅℐᎯℳᎾℕDⅅℐЅC1 (talk) 22:26, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
I am speechless. The Cosmic Cowboy, huh? I bet he's never been on a real radio or television station. It does look like a classic farce of a show, though. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 23:05, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
The weird thing is, he seems like kind of a nice gay guy. Listened to him talk for a bit in a random video and he was like, mostly happy to be in front of that camera and microphone, wearing his favorite cowboy hat, or something to that effect.
I wasn't surprised when he mentioned Alex Jones at one point, though I was actually quite disconcerted when I realized he'd let Walid Shoebat (of all people) on his show. That's... Worrying. I think the Cosmic Cowboy risks getting mixed up with the wrong crowd here, y'know? Reverend Black Percy (talk) 23:26, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
He's really desperate for attention for letting Shoebattery on his show. Hard to tell with some of these internet personalities if they're crazily sincere or in it for the lulz. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 23:57, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Purely from a clickbait perspective, getting one of the Batshits Shoebats on his show was likely his biggest move yet. But I honestly think that the Shoebat interview is kind of the "odd one out" — take a glance at the Cosmic Cowboy's video roster.
Now, these are 99% people I've never heard about before, and that says a lot coming from a full-time RWikipedian fringe watcher. Like, basically all the names here are names that I've not seen before. And the views are at around 500-1000 per video — anyone could beat that.
So my point is, I don't think the Shoebat interview took place because the Cosmic Cowboy actually faps to hate like the Shoebats do. I just think that the Cosmic Cowboy will have on basically any crank that'll speak to him, and conversely, I don't think anyone but the Cosmic Cowboy will have the Shoebats on their show.
So — absurdly — the fact that a Shoebat is on his show might be a testament both to the fact that even most cranks with any notability whatsoever are sorta no platforming the Shoebats, and at the same time, that the Cosmic Cowboy only has a Shoebat on because he doesn't really know what the Shoebats' views are all about in any detail.
I mean, for one, the Cosmic Cowboy is way too New Age not to be on the Shoebat execution list when push comes to shove. I mean, the Shoebats are like some kind of American Taliban, only they have zero power and even other fundamentalists think they're asshats.
Let's face it. You'd have about a snowball's chance in hell getting to dress exclusively in white and silver, walking around calling yourself some kind of "cosmic cowboy" if the Shoebats had their way. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 00:15, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
I mean, the guy seems to have some distance to it all, you know? Here he is horsing around and — I suppose — having some fun at the expense of Bigfoot hunters. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 00:22, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Also, I think stuff like this (priceless title, "Ceasar the Reptoid Slayer") signals not that the Cosmic Cowboy is just messing with these people, but rather — in support of my above given theory — that the Cosmic Cowboy's thing is to literally sit there and do his best to humor just about anyone that'll come on the show and let him interview them.
I mean, the guy seems to be a beekeeper; he seems to have a job or a trade. The whole YouTube thing is probably more of a hobby. You know, he lives out on the land, he's close to nature, he takes care of bees — I think he's just some ol' semi-industrious hippie with a country vibe (and a hobbyistic fascination with the fringe).
But what do I know? The guy's put out like a month's worth of video playtime, and my total viewing time is — and will likely remain — about 60 minutes total. So I'm hardly in a position to tell. But, you know, these are my two cents. *shrugs* Reverend Black Percy (talk) 00:36, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
I think you're on to something there. He's probably doing this gig for the entertainment value and he doesn't appear to be a loony promoting the (ahem) viewpoints of the people he interviews. There's something to be said about that. I'm primarily a radio junkie and don't spend much time on the youtoobs. I have friends who listen to Alex Jones, TruNews and Brother Stair on the radio for the entertainment value. There's a particularly crazy husband and wife conspiracy theory pair that's on shortwave every Thursday night at 8 p.m. local time here on the US east coast that we all get together and listen to every week, just to hear what insane things they'll say and who their occasional bizarre guest stars will be. Hell, we even have a drinking game during their show. I find just about everything these people say to be awful and abhorrent, but I still listen. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 01:00, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Wow, that's actually kinda fascinating. So let me get this straight; you get together with friends, or family, and you listen to cranks just for the hell of it? Do any of those people know about RationalWiki or your affiliation to it? I really do mean that that sounds pretty dope.
I mean, I know that feeling (I think) — and it can be a riot. Just a few weeks ago, I had one of my best pals over, and we actually sat up and watched this entire David Icke sermon, specifically on the topic of the Moon actually being not just hollowed-out, but a spaceship at that.
Now, I would've written that we watched the whole thing "non-stop", but actually, we did nothing like it — we had to pause every minutes or two, just to comment one something he'd said, or to point something out among his graphs. To be perfectly frank with you, it was a complete blast.
And on a similar note; if you scan through the Cosmic Cowboy's material, you'll likely notice that his big passion isn't really the camera, or what he edits into his greenscreen, or any of that — I think his real interest is talking into that Texas-sized, all-chrome rodeo announcer mic he has sitting in front of him. Heck, he should've dubbed himself the Chrome Cowboy instead. Besides, most of his guests are actually call-in. Some use a webcam, sure, but I that's really just because they can (it being a feature of his current medium).
My point is; his show is basically tailor made for radio, and it's been adapted for the YouTube era — not the other way around. YouTube being the place where you get the advertiser clicks and manage to reach the smartphone-surfing kids (or atleast, have a shot to). I mean, how old do you think this guy is? Around his forties, fifties? Even sixties? He's no spring chicken, I'll tell you that.
Considering all this, would you be willing to bet if he has some sort of background in amateur ham radio stuff, or (maybe) even broadcasting? Just for fun, of course. If you'd wager a flat "yes" or "no", how come? Any "tells" of his I should be aware of?
Because, I mean, I don't know the man's life exactly. But based on his ownership of various tech toys (filming with different cameras, his mic, his greenscreen, even driving around in an ATV), he seems to have the relative cash, the time and the interest to dick around with any given hardware-driven hobby he happens to fall for. Admittedly I'm out on a limb here, but hey — bets are for fun, not for knowing. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 01:27, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
It is certainly possible that he has some experience in broadcasting. He doesn't seem to be a stereotypical ham, but I know a lot of hams who are neither stereotypical or typical in any way. I can personally state from experience that doing live radio is a fuckin' blast and is exhilarating. The emergence of the internet and platforms like youtube have made it really easy for anyone with a mic and a computer can get on and rant and rave about anything and everything. My radio work is primarily music oriented but I do mash-up recordings of fringe content for humorous effect and include them in my shows, e.g. this.
It's because of the nature of shortwave, that since the signal covers a wide geographical area, my shortwave friends are all over the place and so we get together via irc and have been doing this kind of communication for around fifteen years or so. None of the core group are hams; actually we come from the other side of the fence and are greatly interested in broadcasting, especially unlicensed broadcasting. Ham radio communication is by definition point-to-point and is not broadcasting, per se, however there are a few "zoo" ham frequencies that are sometimes very entertaining and are reminiscent of the worst of the dregs of CB Radio.
My friends know of my presence here at RW though I don't go out of my way to publicize it much, but I do point to it as a reference. Cheers, Cosmikdebris (talk) 01:58, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for replying man — I know I can kinda go on and on. Hah. Th hug.gif
Just a short question — Zappahead, is that you on tumblr? Meaning: the clip you linked, was that a recording of you (playing some Alex Jones)? All the best buddy, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 02:04, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Ya, that's one of my tumblr's. Alex and others you hear on that byte was recorded right off my shortwave receiver. --Cosmikdebris (talk) 02:10, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Coolio, thanks. You gotta get back to me in more detail some time on your crank Thursdays. Can't rightfully mention a drinking game without naming the rules, eh compadre? But you've done more than enough for one evening. All the best bud, Reverend Black Percy (talk) 02:12, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

socialism[edit]

You reverted the louder with crowder and prager university citations. Do you have any objections to what the sources said (if so what are they), or is your objection only the names of the sources? --1.136.105.34 (talk) 02:02, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Respectfully speaking, I do not consider a naked link to a youtube video a valid citation. If you want to use this material here, at a minimum please provide some context, for example, what the video said (a transcript), and at what point in the video it was said, and how it relates to the article. No one wants to go watch that video without some context. I don't blindly revert any reference to Dennis Prager. I've heard what he has to say and he comes off as a more-or-less atypical right wing radio personality. More power to him, if that's his bag. What he calls a university is not one, though.
