I think we should have one called sock or sockpuppet. But what special powers would they have, or what normal abilities would be excised from their repertoire? Only being allowed to edit during "odd" hours?humanUser talk:Human 19:33, 27 February 2008 (EST)

What luck![edit]

I see you have just logged on. This is swell. I and the other esteemed users have been having merry discussion on the secret forums about your status on this wiki. Frankly, we are all fed up with your blatant disregard for the rules. We have decided unanimously that you are a burden here. We are going to remove your powers and block you at 12:00 eastern. Please say your last goodbyes, because we will be range blocking all of your known IPs. Again, this was all decided in the secret forums. All the best, TmtamesP 23:31, 2 March 2008 (EST)

Hey TM, I was updating the history of my sock 'NeverForget' when I discovered some wonderful edit wars you and I had over on CP! Very funny. Marcus...[edit]

You saw what he did to Susan's talk page, right? Blatantly sexist and completely over the line. I'll defer (seeing as it's your blog and all....) but I really think that was totally uncool and sanction-worthy...Peace. PFoster 11:48, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

Oh I absolutely think it was well over the line, but I may not be here in 2 hours or whatever when he gets back and wanted a response to his claim that style of communication=rational or irrational. tmtoulouse beleaguer 11:51, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

My apologies[edit]

I couldn't reply earlier because for some reason even after I was unblocked yesterday I was still blocked. I would like to completely apologise for what was a completely out of order act. In my defense though, it was intended as tongue in cheek, and I didn't even think of the sexual connotations until I was blocked. Once again, what I did was intolerable and I hope you will accept my humblest of apologies. MarcusCicero 09:46, 12 April 2008 (EDT) (I'm repeating this message on Susan's page)

Templars[edit]

I was reading Foucault's Pendulum the other day, and in a list of conspiracy groups being rattled off, one group mentioned was the Templar Knights of Toulouse. This lends much credence to the theory that you're actually a member of the Templars, claiming to work undercover for the Rosicrucians, but actually working undercover for the Gnostics; also, you live in Atlantis (which you reach from Aghartha), your father was the Count de Saint-Germain, and the Holy Grail is hidden under the caps lock key on your keyboard. ThunderkatzHo! 21:30, 14 April 2008 (EDT) P.S. This is what happens when you're tired and bored. P.P.S. We should probably have articles on many of these if we don't already.

Thomas Toulouse, you're not still angry about me trying to frame you as a sockpuppet are you? SHahB 14:37, 17 April 2008 (EDT)

Wait, are you admitting to being a sock? SHahB 14:41, 17 April 2008 (EDT)

I might have referred to you as "uneducated". I emphatically take this back. I'm sure you're highly educated and will make a great neuroscientist or bartender or whatever. Again, sorry. SHahB 01:28, 18 April 2008 (EDT)

I get those confused too. tmtoulouse beleaguer 01:30, 18 April 2008 (EDT)

Thomas, I find it hilarious that you can't get enough money from the generous liberals to pay for this site. But these ads really are annoying. I demand that they be removed, and that you tell us all how much each has given to the site. Thanks, SHahB 01:26, 7 May 2008 (EDT)

Sectional/series templates[edit]

Is there a standing "ban" on sectional and/or series templates for this wiki? Lyra Belaqua Alethiometer 16:53, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

There is no standing ban on anything other than TK, but I am not really sure what a sectional/series template refers too. tmtoulouse beleaguer 16:55, 15 May 2008 (EDT)
If you mean templates that are "nested", ie, one uses another, which uses another, which uses another... no, but try to KISS if you can? It makes them very hard to work on. humanUser talk:Human 17:30, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

unstubbing[edit]

Don't forget to change the "stub" template to "nostub" to block stubbot's next foray... ħumanUser talk:Human 20:59, 6 June 2008 (EDT)

I am inside the stubbot code right now. The new indexbot now indexes everything where as the old indexing didn't. So I am having to write in code to skip redirects and I am also skipping articles marked with a fork. Now I am having problems with special character articles. tmtoulouse beleaguer 21:01, 6 June 2008 (EDT)

It all ready is, is there a problem with it? tmtoulouse beleaguer 16:35, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
Other than it not working, no. It used to work, and I think when Linus upgraded MW we lost it. I have this on my user page: {{DISPLAYTITLE:Cabbage Wedge Gank}} and it does nothing. Am I using the wrong syntax, do you think? ħumanUser talk:Human 16:54, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
The issue is complicated, 1.11 add normalization restrictions to the displaytitle function because of errors occurring in linking. I have gone in and changed the restrictive parser code to a less restrictive version and it seems to have overridden the 1.11 changes. But I need you to keep an eye out on things and see if it breaks anything. tmtoulouse beleaguer 17:20, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
Excellent, it works again! Now the template below which you can comment out works perfectly! ħumanUser talk:Human 17:43, 8 June 2008 (EDT)

By the way, the tag used to add a brief line that said "link to this page as ... (realpagename)", now it doesn't, which is cooler, but also it's gonna have some weird effects, tee hee. ħumanUser talk:Human 17:46, 8 June 2008 (EDT)

Stylistically isn't there suppose to be a break in those locations? tmtoulouse beleaguer 23:25, 12 June 2008 (EDT)
No, I don't think so. The page wraps are just an artifact of the printing/webbing system used. The only "true" wraps are at the verse breaks. Also, no breaks makes using them work better (as it is, they are only using a quarter or so of most screen widths). Imagine the ugly if they were pasted into a table cell slightly narrower than the hard breaks. Ew. ħumanUser talk:Human 23:31, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

On pages with low character counts, that can be important. But I was merely pointing it out. ThunderkatzHo! 11:38, 20 June 2008 (EDT)
Hmmm, so whats the solution..............maybe have the message triggered by a percentage of content removal? Not just blanking? tmtoulouse beleaguer 12:41, 20 June 2008 (EDT)
Well, the first "conditional" would be the page blanking warning. The second would be some percentage removal - 50%, say? What is the message, anyway, a captcha screen before continuing? Full blanking should be auto-reverted, but sometimes massive deletion of content is good editing (I remember removing a lot of the Magdalene Laundry article to leave the good parts...). ħumanUser talk:Human 14:21, 20 June 2008 (EDT)

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you (tmt), but I believe you may be misunderstanding me. Yea, the whole "the Canadian mounties are coming for you" it was the same exchange where he posted the FBI case number of the investigation. Everyone was trying to figure out what the hell he was talking about. I checked the code against the FBI to see what kind of case it was and the closest code that fit it was kidnapping. Then I said...wait.....if I was a complete schmuck what would I do to "report cyber terrorism." Well the answer was--Google it!
I clicked the first link on google and it was a private firm that "collected" complaints and "forwarded" them on to the FBI. discuss[edit]

Toulouse, I would like you to clarify a comment you made a year ago here [1]. You appear to express joy that higher education has a bias. Do you not agree that the academia should function without bias? You, yes you, are part of the problem Tulipouse. Bohdan2 00:05, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Nope, a reality based bias is a prerequisite for being able to educate. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:07, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Dear Timmy, you must understand that your idea of "Toulouse reality" is, simply, flawed. "Toulouse reality" is something you made up. Please try hard to understand. Bohdan2 00:09, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Ok. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:12, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
It was that easy? Something cannot be right. Did you give Human your password or something? Bohdan2 00:13, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
No, just found your rebuttal lacking in anything to respond to. Reality is separate and external from anyone person. Anything else is pure brain in a vat sophistry. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:17, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
But, in reality, you were not talking about reality. You are a deceived individual. What you, in reality, think is reality is really not.
But still, I infer from your comments that you think a leftist bias in education is a good thing? Bohdan2 00:21, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Define some specifics of "leftist bias" ? tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:22, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
General inability to look someone in the eye. 00:25, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Is that a joke? Bohdan2 00:25, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
I would like to see a couple examples of what you perceive as an invalid bias in education. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:33, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Lets simplify. Do you think that any political bias in higher education is acceptable? Bohdan2 00:37, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Just some late night rambling, that's all. Bohdan2 00:39, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
The professor of the class has complete control over its content and it is up to him to teach it how he wants, complete with whatever bias he has. Now if we are talking a "systematic bias" then I would like some specifics since so I can know what you are talking about. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:40, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Thank you Timmy, for explaining how bias enters the classroom. But should not the individual professors strive to be as unbiased as possible? After all, their job is to educate not to indoctrinate. And why do you need specifics for a systematic bias? Is any systematic bias acceptable? Bohdan2 00:43, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Nope, I see no reason for professors to avoid bias, why should they? Systematic bias that favors reality based educational is certainly to be lauded, however, some people feel that reality has a liberal bias. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:45, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Lets be clear here, are you actually denying the possibility of a liberal bias, a bias much like the conservative bias at Conservapedia? Bohdan2 00:47, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
The majority of professors are probably "left of central" by US standards and often bring their perspective to the class. But I would deny anything more systemic than that. tmtoulouse beleaguer 00:55, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Ok. Its always good to know what you think. And Thorin, the more correct term is "left of center". Bohdan2 00:57, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Damn... this was so in the wrong spot... I meant that about the section above... about Wikipedia.... SirChuckBI have very poor judgement 03:59, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

media upload[edit]

Cant upload ".wav" (".wav" is an unwanted file type List of allowed file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, svg). Should we be able to? SusanG  ContribsTalk 07:17, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

I think this is an easy enough change to make, but I don't think mediawiki has a "player" for .wav files? tmtoulouse beleaguer 11:30, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Checking, I think they have to be ".ogg" SusanG  ContribsTalk 11:38, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

unblocking vandals[edit]

I know that either you or Human will soon go through the block list & unblock the various Jezuz, Grawp & HAGGER accounts. I would ask that you don't. When they have to make new accounts it gives us a window of time to notice them before they have a chance to vandalise many accounts. They fill up Rc in minutes & the reversions add to the pollution so the fewer the better. SusanG  ContribsTalk 09:06, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

I tend to agree with you Susan, we can undo the vandalism but sometimes it is a reall pain in the ass. Now if we had a tool to undo all of the vandal edits in one go, rather than having to undo or rollback each edit (or worse, each page move) then I would agree to the more relaxed policy. A one click revert which also erases their efforts from RC might actually act as a partial deterrent to repeat vandals as it would require more effort on their part compared with our cleaning up operation. Jollyfish.gifGenghispillaging 11:27, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
I am in the processes of working on a couple things that I hope will help with the problem of established vandal users names like Jezuz. tmtoulouse beleaguer 11:29, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Eggsellent! SusanG  ContribsTalk 11:40, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
@GK, there is, or was a way to do that, by adding some command to the end of the url at their contributions. Then there's a way to rollback all their edits at once. But I can't remember how to do it. ħumanUser talk:Human 16:43, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
I know because I was the one who first mentioned it on this site. However, it seemed to get broken after Linus made some changes. The trick didn't actually rollback all their changes it just kept them out of RC. Jollyfish.gifGenghispillaging 11:49, 26 June 2008 (EDT)

Reboot?[edit]

Have you tried simply rebooting the server? Do we have the ability to do that? --λινυσ() 15:09, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Sure, I can reboot anything including the server, however what does a full restart gain that just staring the apache server does not? tmtoulouse beleaguer 15:11, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
I believe it clears the RAM. What did you do? The site is much snappier now. --λινυσ() 17:05, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
Much! Whatever it was, it did the trick. Well done TMT. SusanG  ContribsTalk 17:16, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Homeopathy page[edit]

I tried to inject a pro-homeopathy reference (a collection of controlled scientific studies published in respectable medical journals, see http://www.vitalforceconsulting.com/researchinhomeopathy.html) into the Homeopathy page and was summarily reverted. As one of the primary editors of the page do you think this is the way to approach the issue?

Demosthenes

Let's take it to the homeopathy talk page? I will see you there. tmtoulouse beleaguer 15:08, 26 June 2008 (EDT)
Yes, please keep the article discussion at it's talk page, not scattered over several user talk pages. I copied your comment on my talk page and my reply to it there. By the way, the link above is very low quality. ħumanUser talk:Human 15:26, 26 June 2008 (EDT)

Yah, thanks. Can you at least put a warning up or something? I just lost a complex answer to chaos, so instead of being able to answer, I blocked him for three days for blanking my user talk page. Little prick... Good luck with the vandal brake! ħumanUser talk:Human 02:17, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

vandal brake[edit]

OK, it works? But, only 'crats can alter user groups, right? And that is required to make it work (like there are, what, four users that should be in it).

Anyway, as teh beans guy said to me in IRC: "This all really defeats chaos' point." And I agree. It was a much bigger pain in the ass just blanking ten pages for you than it ever has been rolling back ten page blanks. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:35, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Yea, moving a user into the "vandal" group should make blocking almost pointless as I can set it so that they can't make an edit for as long as we want. A user in that group that can only make an edit 3 times a day doesn't need to be blocked. I can also use the same strategy to brake editing rates from any category of users, such as brand new accounts or anonymous IPs. TMTVandal2 03:38, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Of course needs a little more testing tweaking before doing anything drastic. tmtoulouse beleaguer 03:40, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Nice... so we should start a community standards discussion of what the "slowdown" rates should be for various groups of funny-smelling people, now? <\SNARK!>ħumanUser talk:Human 03:41, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Yea basically 3 categories of users, anonymous IPs, new accounts (<20 edits, <3 days old), and vandals. tmtoulouse beleaguer 03:43, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

But back to what beans said. We tried to break the wiki and it self-healed! First Pinto, then Arcan. Although I agree your machine is pretty cool. Will it say things other than "vandal!"? ħumanUser talk:Human 03:47, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

It can say anything we want...and I am the one that's advocated not blocking vandals at all from the get go :). tmtoulouse beleaguer 03:48, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
And I agree, and we even have evidence to argue our case! (the wiki worked faster than any bot could have!) ħumanUser talk:Human 04:46, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
I say just set edit rate to once every few hours for "vandal" and move them into that category and forget about them. Then anonymous/new users at an edit rate of no more than one edit every 10-20 seconds. There shouldn't really be a legitimate need to edit any faster. And once they become "established" (which is not hard) edit rates are not limited. I think a plan like that could drastically limit what vandalism we do get and make blocking almost obsolete. tmtoulouse beleaguer 05:01, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Can you control the edit rate of individual users or is it by group? Incidentally, while I agree that we can rapidly undo the "normal" vandals the more malicious "page move" types are a lot more hassle to fix.--Bobbing up 05:05, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
On another issue - who will have access to this? If it's only you (TM) then you will need to be watching things 24/7 won't you?--Bobbing up 05:07, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
I hate to say this, but I see no point in a "vandal brake", really. It would not make life easier to us or to them, and it will not be more morally acceptable. "We don't banhammer for ideological reasons, we just... slow you inferior Liberals down to useless, HAHA" would CP's version be. (Editor at) CP:no intelligence allowed 06:41, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Looks like a cool idea to me. Usually a vandal will manage at least five or six "hits" before getting stopped. I guess the challenge is to work as quickly as possible in order to see how much mess they can make, and then orgasm over the results in recent changes as people bounce them back. If the system simply prevents them getting past one or two why would they even bother to start?--Bobbing up 08:09, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Individual users could be added but that would have to be manual. I think it is better to just move them into the vandal user right. At the moment only the crates can move people into the vandal category. Page moves is turned off for non-established users, and for any user in the vandal user group. And Ed@Cp, no one would use this on anyone but a consistent vandal. We are currently talking about permanent bans for these users. This is a method that for all intents and purposes can stop a known vandal account while still giving them access to the site. If they post "hey just kidding I will be good now" they can be moved out. I see this as a far better solution than a block. tmtoulouse beleaguer 12:29, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

I like it. See my discussion with Susan on her talk page.--Bobbing up 12:34, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
I want to see how it plays out, and if it works I will offer to sell it to Schlafly. tmtoulouse beleaguer 14:04, 28 June 2008 (EDT)
Actually it did occur to me that it could a useful tool in other wikis.--Bobbing up 14:06, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Ummm...[edit]

Hey, yeah. The new system stuff (think It's called vandal brake) is supposed to allow one edit per 15 seconds, is that correct, as to avoid two quick edits. I tried to make my first edit of the night as an IP and it didn't work. So either someone used my IP, my computer, or there is a gli-t-ch. I don't think the first is possible, the second is probalby not either as there is no one who broke into my room 14 seconds before I edited just to edit RW. Of course I may have misread or done something wrong. Just though I'd drop you a line. --*Gen. S.T. Shrink* Get to the bunker 03:11, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Hey STS, this whole thing is in beta mode right now, don't expect it to work right yet! ħumanUser talk:Human 03:34, 29 June 2008 (EDT)
So, telling one glitch might help. That was a bit of my reasoning. Thats a lie. --*Gen. S.T. Shrink* Get to the bunker 03:35, 29 June 2008 (EDT)
Oh, absolutely, clearly reporting glitches is a good thing. "Clearly reporting" being a key here. I just thought you were jumping in to "delta" testing mode and expecting everything to work. Mia apologia. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:51, 29 June 2008 (EDT)
Don't apologia. Although I did expect better. I mean it's already been at least 12 hours since Trent started, it should be perfect in every way by now. I mean sure it's a very complex system of wikifying that I couldn't accomplish with a full team of 200+ IQ programmers and Bill Gates, but thats no excuse for it to not work exactly right every time. (joke, just wanted to make that clear). --*Gen. S.T. Shrink* Get to the bunker 04:05, 29 June 2008 (EDT)
Hehehe, you are absolutely correct in your expectations! ħumanUser talk:Human 04:14, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Question, had you recently made an edit with your logged in account, then logged off and tried to make an edit? Or had you not made any edits at all with your computer and it glitched? tmtoulouse beleaguer 13:53, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Vandal brake, take 2[edit]

I think that the brake doesn't affect their ability to relocate pages. I moved Jerkoff Molotov to that group with RationalWiki:Vandal and he still kept on relocating until I blocked him. ThunderkatzHo! 09:54, 30 June 2008 (EDT)

Tmtoulouse - How did User:Revelation get past the system?--Bobbing up 12:58, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

Get past in what sense? tmtoulouse beleaguer 12:58, 1 July 2008 (EDT)
See recent changes. He was created 17:27 and made five edits between 17:28 and 17:29. I thought it would slow new users down more than that. Or have I missed something. --Bobbing up 13:02, 1 July 2008 (EDT)
Ah, yea, there is a problem with "leading zeros" in the date storage. Mediawiki in its infinite wisdom is storing the timestamp in different formats depending on the time of day. This was leading to no vandal break between 10am-12am and shutting down edits from 1am-9am. I have been chasing my tail around trying to figure out the algorithm and think I might have it now. tmtoulouse beleaguer 13:13, 1 July 2008 (EDT)
YES! storing the timestamp in different formats depending on the time of day: well, of course you would do that wouldn't you? Perhaps they should tie it into the phases of the moon just to make it a bit more interesting. .-) --Bobbing up 13:17, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

pregunta[edit]

Is there a tag similar to <nowiki> that only applies to double bracket links (so that goats appears as [[goat|goats]])? I ask because it would be nice to stick around copies of CP talk pages so we don't have to worry about red links to things we don't want or need. ThunderkatzHo! 11:42, 5 July 2008 (EDT)

No, nothing like that, I would say that the easiest way to deal with those is to run them through a find/replace before pasting them in. tmtoulouse beleaguer 12:32, 5 July 2008 (EDT)
