Sysop[edit]

Plutocow (talk) 15:28, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, I guess. ;) Nope Rocket (talk) 15:44, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Hitchens[edit]

Totally agree with the removal of those 2 paragraphs. Fucking nonsense. Acei9 08:10, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

If I'm to be perfectly candid, I've always viewed Hitchens as the worst of the Four Horsemen, and the one whose writing has least stood the test of time. I've gone back to Dawkins' science writing because it's still solid even as his political commentary has increasingly veered toward hot garbage. But I'd forgotten I'd read God Is Not Great until seeing the book cover in Hitchens' RW article. Takedowns of theism and organised religion seem a lot less relevant after a decade of prominent New Atheist figures aligning with the Christian right on everything from feminism to LGBT rights. We can't know for certain where Hitchens would be were he still around, but I tend to think that, like Harris and Dawkins, he would've grown more bilious in a post-Elevatorgate world. People haven't shied away from criticising Dawkins and Harris. But Hitchens often seems to be remembered in soft focus. Why? Because he's dead? (Ironic, given his stance on Mother Teresa.) I think RW could improve its Hitchens coverage in this regard but it's probably not something I want to take on personally. Nope Rocket (talk) 23:27, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Blade of Northern lights ban[edit]

I understand why you would ban him but I don't think a three week long is good. I think a topic ban is better. --Edward the eight (talk) 08:37, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

He's a sysop - he can unblock himself you know. Acei9 08:43, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Also - what was the block for? I reviewed the edits and there is nothing there to warrant blocking anyway. Acei9 08:46, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Transphobia apparently but I saw no transphobia from him but even if he was transphobic why would a ban for three weeks be justifiable --Edward the eight (talk) 08:49, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
A) I don't see anything in the edits to justify a ban and, B) as a sysop Northern Lights can unblock themselves. Nope Rocket, WTF? Acei9 08:53, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
I tried to take BotNL's block log into account in accordance with the pamphlet I got handed when I was demoted: "When a sysop is in the blocking window, a sysop can see the block history of the person being blocked. If somebody is a repeat offender, then the duration of the block can acceptably be increased." Some of the early blocks appear to be joke blocks, but there were two more recent blocks for apparent misbehaviour (a reversed infinite block, and a later block of 3.6 days). 3.14 weeks was the next pre-programmed block option after 3.6 days.
BotNL edit-warred on J.K. Rowling using a ridiculous transphobic false equivalence as the justification, then repeated an earlier pointless heckling comment in the "Transgender Healthcare Bans" thread at the Saloon Bar. Frankly, there's two or three other users in that thread and the "Overlap Between Anti-vaxxers and TERFs" one I think fully deserve to be indeffed, since they seem to do nothing but spew pointless bilge on talk pages while making few constructive mainspace edits. But BotNL was the one who decided to grind his transphobic axe in mainspace, and so BotNL was the one I judged most actively needed to have his conduct brought under control. Nope Rocket (talk) 09:18, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
why block him for three weeks? --Edward the eight (talk) 09:20, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
First paragraph. Nope Rocket (talk) 09:22, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Dude, Blade is a fucking sysop - you can't block him because he can always unblock himself. Acei9 09:33, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Agree with ace --Edward the eight (talk) 09:37, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Promote him for the duration of the block then. Otherwise it's meaningless having any kind of blocking policy, since admin rights seem to be basically handed out to everyone who isn't an obvious troll. Nope Rocket (talk) 09:41, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
You can't just promote him on your say so. If you want that take it to the mods. Acei9 09:45, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
If BotNL's demotion was anything like mine, it was the result of another user's random, individual discretionary decision. Seems weird and self-sabotaging to allow users to be made admins at personal discretion but require de-admining (even temporary) to be a formalised process. Anyway, if this is one of those spaces that tolerates bigotted turds shitting up the place because fReEzE spEeCh, I guess it's time for me to say my farewells. Nope Rocket (talk) 10:04, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
so censorship is good? --Edward the eight (talk) 10:07, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Ridiculous false equivalence but I'll bite. Yes, some level of moderation is essential to the long-term survival of a private, collaboratively-run project. Bigots and trolls contribute little to wikis and drive off productive users. Eventually, a tipping point is reached, where the no-moderation free-for-all draws in more and more bigots and trolls, creating an environment so toxic that no new productive users want to join to replace the ones lost. The project implodes or stagnates. RW set its fate long ago, it seems. I just didn't notice the systemic rot because I mostly stick to articlespace. Nope Rocket (talk) 10:26, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
I've been here 15 years and heard this little speech (or some variant of) many times. Yet here RW stands. Acei9 10:29, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Why do I suddenly have Ken rants dancing in my head? Luigifan18 (talk) 10:37, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Is it anywhere near as active as it was 15 years ago? 10 years ago? 5 years ago? In the the time that I've been around, I've seen as many articles deleted as created. People who just want somewhere other than 4chan, Reddit, Twitter, Substack, or major newspapers to say all the things some indefinable "they" supposedly won't let them say? A dime a dozen. People who actually want to do the work necessary to build a wiki? Rare. Free-speech absolutism was attractive and sometimes even necessary 25 years ago when the Internet was first carving out its place in the world. Today, in a world on the brink of a second rise of fascism, it is realistically untenable. See: "Paradox of Tolerance" comic. Nope Rocket (talk) 10:57, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Retirement[edit]

It's a shame to see you leave. You're a damn fine editor. Happy trails, of course. Vee (talk) 15:35, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

He was a good editor sad see him go,--Edward the eight (talk) 15:39, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Deadnaming[edit]

I'm aware of issues with deadnaming, but the wording was confusing in that quote, particularly because of the two sequential links to the same Wikipedia article (which itself contains the deadname). Perhaps just a single link to Wikipedia and/or a footnote? Bongolian (talk) 22:47, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Recommendation[edit]

Making a user page may make your edits less prone to kneejerk reversions; though I recognize you by now, others may not and can operate with more scrutiny towards red-names and IPs out of habit and stereotype. Can make a user page just as simple as "Hi". Chillpilled (talk) 18:14, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Ninja[edit]

You are now a ninja, which means you can hide your edits from the recent changes; you should do this for repetitive edits like mass recategorizations. Plutocow (talk) 19:09, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Cool! How do I activate my new ninja powers? Nope Rocket (talk) 19:12, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
In the page for user rights, change yourself to "bot". Then edit away. When finished, be sure to uncheck "bot". It's only really used for cleaning up links and editing (non-controversial) categories, so that no one needs to see 100's of fixes in the "recent changes" section. Mistakes will always happen of course, but happy editing. CorruptUser 19:24, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, making a tonne of repetitive edits wouldn't be an issue on Wikipedia, because Recent Changes moves extremely fast. But I can see how it could be an issue on a less-active wikis. That said: I would appreciate if you didn't post on my talk page going forward, particularly not minutes after I drew a line regarding your unacceptable conduct. Nope Rocket (talk) 19:36, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
The talk pages are open to everyone, so long as they are acting in good faith. But if you want to declare enemies, sure, I'll leave you to it. CorruptUser 20:23, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
People who uncritically spread Libs of TikTok hate propaganda are not welcome to message me directly. Any comments can be posted on the appropriate article talk pages. The fact that you have refused to honour my simple request and are apparently seeking to antagonise me personally further demonstrates you are not fit to hold a position of power.
