History[edit]

Must all men be doomed by their past? By man's judgement? MarcusCicero 17:13, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

When you appear, making rather snide commments (SusanG) and self-laudatory ones (Human) after an absence where you had been roundly belabored for exactly the same sort of thing, then yes, I think so. You're a historian of sorts, aren;t you - so you should approve, and butter 17:18, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

You weren't there when the whole thing blew up originally, so I would suppose from reading the responses on my page you might come up with this assumption. Though it does seem a tad assuming for someone just in the door to make such pontifications. (And yes, I am a historion - of sorts) MarcusCicero 17:32, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

I was lurking - but admittedly not paying all that much attention. Why can't you be nice about people? Then they might be nice about you? and butter 17:41, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

I am nice to people. But online I suffer from 'internet-schizophrenia', a common ailment where internet users tend to adopt wholely different personalities when online. MarcusCicero 17:58, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

Theory of evolution[edit]

Hi I had to roll back what you did as you seem to have doubled the pages size. Of you want get rid of the red links, create an article if appropriate to RationalWiki, use template:wpl to send someone to Wikipedia or template:cpl to send them to Conservapeida. The latter two can be done by changing [[name|long incoherent text by Ken]] to {{cpl|name|long incoherent text by Ken}} and it won't change the formatting of the article. - User 06:01, 4 November 2008 (EST)

I agree with Teh Crumpet here, a 3 second block is no big deal, anything longer can create a big waste of time - and lost work at worst. Still, I am not against them - as long used in the "yo mamma" fashion, not the "prick up your ears" fashion. ħumanUser talk:Human 21:44, 17 January 2009 (EST)

Sandbox fix (User:Toast/sandbox1 and Template:Help01)[edit]

I think I fixed your Sandbox problem there. Only stumbled over it now because I wanted to know what else linked to some non-existent template (the one included in the Cquote documentation). For reference, the issue was with how the MediaWiki software handles wikitables: It can be really idiotic with the "The {| part must be in a new line" rule. One quick point, I recognised that face instantly as Uncle Joe Stalin. Oh, and the brackets are sort of the universal symbol for a wiki. So in context at that SR of CP article, it ought to be fairly clear? JHMO, of course. ħumanUser talk:Human 16:09, 24 January 2009 (EST)

Help pages[edit]

I am given to understand you wrote most of the help pages initially. What I was planing to do was a bit of an update starting with the signatures as we seem to have the most problem with those, people dumping huge amounts of code every where and stuff. I created an account called User:Yourname for this purpose but decided to expand his use so we can make a pictorial guide to getting around the wiki. How to edit talkpage, what to do during an edit conflict, how to make a more annoying signature than mine, how to block and vandal bin CUR and so forth. If you are interested in helping I can give you Yourname's password. - User 00:13, 31 January 2009 (EST)

Why would we need the password, exactly? I see the point of using a neutral "yourname" user ID to improve those articles, of course. And, yes, and no, and yes, and no, ;) Yeah, let's just say Toast does a lot of work on the help files ;) without complete confirmation. Let a woman have her privacy :) I usually ran around after her fixing minor formatting issues, mostly due to "her" editing on thing like mobile phones. Also, with the sigs, don't people usually fix them pretty quickly after others whine at them? Hi, toast! ħumanUser talk:Human 00:54, 31 January 2009 (EST)
No better reason than so when we direct them to User:Yourname/sig it wasn't an actual user name. The I decided he could be a generic RationalWikian for our examples. Just a thought. - User 01:09, 31 January 2009 (EST)

PS: I did consider moving them all into "Help" Namespace instead of RW. Toast s.png (Toast) and marmalade
Is there a "help" namespace? Remember that a colon does not "make" a namespace, the meister has to "create" it for it to be "real". ħumanUser talk:Human 01:11, 31 January 2009 (EST)

Move keeps the history, don't copy/paste. Anyway if we want to move all our help files, we should enlist RA's help. He really likes doing that sort of repetitive work. Will moving them break the magic navbox? ħumanUser talk:Human 01:50, 31 January 2009 (EST)
The history was one reason I suggested copy/pasting them :) I think the navbox'll be OK, as I recall it is dependent on the Cat not the namespace. The main thing about moving 'em'll be the linkinges between them. Toast s.png (Toast) and marmalade 02:00, 31 January 2009 (EST)
Copy/paste kills the history, it's the wrong way to do it. Move saves it, it's the right way. OK, the navbox is "space" independent, cool, thanks. ħumanUser talk:Human 02:29, 31 January 2009 (EST)

Vandal[edit]

I note you were one of several who dealt with THC LOADEE. Fortunately there was more than one of you. On Dec 10th last year I dealt with a vandal attack single handed. That’s a thankless task. If you get it right the chances are no one notices. If you block the wrong person under pressure or seem to block the wrong person under pressure you’re accused of sysop abuse. If you ever find yourself the lone defender against a persistent vandal look for other active sysops in recent changes and ask them in their talk pages to help. Dumb questions.[edit]

So I see the brown toast, and the written "and pickle", but what's the whitish image between the "Toast" and "pickle"? Cheese? (Yes, I"m at work. No, I don't want to be serious. So Yes, I am doing the MAJOR procrastination thing.) :D--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«I don't think in any language. I think in images. V.Nabokov» 10:08, 23 February 2009 (EST)

Stilton.jpgIt is teh STILTON. The queen of cheeses! ToastToastand marmite 10:54, 23 February 2009 (EST)
So, toast, stilton and pickle... special. ArmondikoVpathetic 11:01, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Actually my favourite way with Stilton is: A winter evening, a log fire, rich fruit cake, a decent single malt and stilton AND someone to snuggle with. ToastToastand marmite 11:19, 23 February 2009 (EST)
OHOHOH, speaking of which (and as I've not been around for 6 months, due to elections), I looked and looked and went to a fancy smanshy cheese store (for Xmas Dinner) and found your Queen. God, she's good cheese! I don't think we get her pure, though, cause of that whole "pasteurized/non-pasteurized things here in the US. But I'll get some in Scotland/Eyre when I get there in April. *smacks lips in anticipation!*. So thanks for the recomendations. I'd take any other suggestions (of particular brands of cheeses you like, food stuffs I should try, etc), if you have any. Most people go on vacation for the sites. I go for the foods! --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«I don't think in any language. I think in images. V.Nabokov» 11:09, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Ireland: Guinness (you can't get the proper stuff elsewhere); Scotland: Ardbeg single malt whisky. There are good cheeses in both places - can't immediately think of any names though. ToastToastand marmite 11:14, 23 February 2009 (EST)

Most decent cheeses in Scotland are of boutique farmhouse manufacture. Usually made in small quantities so you need to look around and taste them. If you go to one of the larger cities then look for a specialist cheese shop (you can research their locations ahead of time). For a good Stilton ask for Colston Bassett, it's unpasteurised and should be nice and creamy. While you can find Stilton in a supermarket it usually isn't of the same quality you'll get from a specialist. Whisky is an individual thing, there are many different styles with single malts being the thing to go far. I like Highland Park and The Arran. Remember, just a drop of pure water and NO ICE. Redchuck.gif ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. 11:27, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Amen to the Colston Basset. Most towns have a cheese shop, but you might need to hunt for them. ToastToastand marmite 11:38, 23 February 2009 (EST)

What do you plan to do in Edinburgh? Word word Hoover! 12:12, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Sometimes one has to take the rough with the smooth and experience the more exotic aspects of a nation's cuisine, so if you're going to Glasgow make sure you dry the local speciality - deep-fried Mars bar. It will probably disgust you (and you don't even have to eat it all) but you will get loads of brownie points to tell the folks back home that you at least tried it. Redchuck.gif ГенгисYou have the right to be offended; and I have the right to offend you. 12:21, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Well, I did promise myself I would try Haggas. My dad is a Piper, and always has to pipe on Burns day, when you read "the" poem (not sure which one... i'm a bad 3rd generational scot), and slice into the haggas. But i've never had the delight (?) of trying it myself. As for the trip, we will be in France for two weeks in April. We found Are Lingus(sp?) which had flights from Paris to Dublin for 35 bucks a person including all taxes. So we are going to spend 4 days during that two weeks in the UK. Probably 2 days in Scotland, 2 in Ireland. Only restrictions are that we have to use bus or train to get anywhere. So I"m not sure where we'll be. I want smaller towns, cause to me (right or wrong) Metro is Metro, be it Paris, NY, or Dublin. So "what will I do / see?" don't know yet. I'm googling right now. I've a month to figure it out. :D. --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«I don't think in any language. I think in images. V.Nabokov» 12:38, 23 February 2009 (EST)

(undent)I believe it's illegal to import haggis into the US on account of it's offal. You might have difficulty getting a bus or train from Ireland to Scotland, though. ToastToastand marmite 12:44, 23 February 2009 (EST)

PS Ireland (Eire) ≠ UK!!!!!! ToastToastand marmite

I used to like haggis, until I was put off by the low-quality stuff they served in my school. Word word Hoover! 12:47, 23 February 2009 (EST)
OOPs, Bad to my "UK" "Eire" confusion. I'm not good at the troubled past of Ireland & England. But if you ask me about Scotland and england... hehe. Toast, we found through Are Linguis, "0" Euro tickets. All you pay is taxes and handling. it's about 25 per person one way from Dublin to Either Edinburgh or Glasglow. Then we have to fly back into Dublin, then fly from Dublin to Paris. No direct flights from Paris to scotland, on "cheepo" flights. And yeah, the haggis that is usually served here in Denver on Burn's day is smuggled in if they can. I did that with European butter and cheese, cause the US thinks we will all die if we eat things humans have been eating for thousands of years. "silly rabbits". --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«I don't think in any language. I think in images. V.Nabokov» 13:10, 23 February 2009 (EST)
<Snide comment> For a polyglot your spelling stinks! :) </snide comment>ToastToastand marmite 13:26, 23 February 2009 (EST)
Luckily, Russian's spelling is exactly as it sounds. I'm dyslexic, for what it's worth (though in the 21st century, that's rarely an excuse). I never posted on websites till FireFox came out with an online spell checker. Cause it looked like a 6th grader had written it. ;-) But now, usually, I have little wavy red lines under misspellings, so I can fake most of the spelling stuff. A polyglot? Have you considered seeing a doctor about that? Word word Hoover! 14:37, 23 February 2009 (EST)
It's ok. The doc assures me that at this stage, its in such elementary stages that it will cause me no harm. However, he did caution that this condition is quite harmful upon others at this stage of development. Apparently, it causes damage to something called "natives" who hear your vocalizations and run from the room screaming about corruption of their language or something. --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«I don't think in any language. De-fin-ately. De-fi-ant-ly. sighs. this is one word i should just take out of my vocab. to be defiant, to be definite. They look the same to my eyes, unless i break them down into little phonemes. As for Genghis' point. I blame Webster, and the Brits who were so keen on making standardized spellings, but never bothered to ask eachother what the standards should be. That and the great vowel shift. hehehe.
Yeah, blame us. Never mind all of the spellings which were changed by the Americans, confusing things further. Word word Hoover! 15:25, 23 February 2009 (EST)

(unindent) Yeah, well when you explain the use of a "u" in a word that does not (anylonger?) carry a phoneme to associate with it - Labour, Colour, Phantoum Hoouver - then i said "dude, what gives".
