- I am a "big" picture thinking person ya know? Things like punctuation, grammar, spelling....these are not things I am fully engaged in! I spent 6 months in my freshman year of highschool trying to find out who could eliminate the apostrophe from the English language. I finally decided that it was the editor of the MLA style guide book, since that is whats the majority of schools use. So I started a petition and got almost 200 hundred signatures for the elimination of the apostrophe from the MLA style book. I sent it in....and received a lovely form letter back telling me the appreaciated my input and would consider it for future editions. It never happened...bastards. 24.141.169.255 15:23, 16 July 2007 (CDT)

- Sacrilege! ThunderkatzHo! 09:29, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
Sorry- the subject's not up for discussion : compared with the good oldies (Heinlein, Pohl, Pornelle, Clarke, Azimov, Bradbury, Simac, Van Vogt etc etc etc) and the superb newbies(Iain M Banks, William Gibson, Richard Morgan, Alastair Reynolds, me etc etc etc), the whole series is crap. Admittedly I've only read the 1st two but that was out of a sense of duty -not 'cause I enjoyed them. The word that springs to mind is "immature". Keepìì it to yourself íí 11:20, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- Maybe to "old fogies" like you, but to young people, the series was incredible. Ender's Game wasn't written for adults. And once you get to Speaker For the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind, it only gets better. Granted, no one's going to look back and say "What an incredible author," but they're still good books, especially for teens. ThunderkatzHo! 11:36, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
- p.s. Thanks for even more authors whose books I have to read now. And how could you forget Lovecraft? Or Phillip K. Dick? Or L. Ron Hubbard :)
Point taken, I am a certifiable antique - sorry for trampling on your flowers. Re other authors - didn't forget - there's just too many to mention (not a Lovecraft fan).Horselover Fat - yes of course (look it up if you don't get the ref). LRon? - neargh! I could go on for ever. Unfortunately I lost several thousand books about 25 years ago and another several hundred in the great flood (couldn't get 'em on the ark) - Some 1st editions & some signed 1sts. I also had a zillion old SF pulp mags - astounding (analog) & others. "Altogether now: Those were the days my friend ...". I've got about 40 copies of a book (that's about 1/2 the print run!) by an author whose name modesty prevents me from revealing that have been well soaked in flood water. - Robert Heinlein
- Fred Pohl & (?) Kornbluth
- Gerry Pournelle
- Arthur C. Clarke
- Isaac Azimov
- Ray Bradbury
- Clifford Simac
- A E. Van Vogt
- Larry Niven - anything
- Roger Zelazny - especially the 'Amber' series
- Kurt Vonnegut - sirens
- Eric Frank Russell - with a sense of humour
- Cordwainer Smith - weird universe
- Phillip K Dick - genius?
- Jack Vance - Amusng
- Samuel Delaney - subversive
Newbies (Not so new now)[edit]
- Iain M Banks - triffic (also, without the 'M' good straight fiction)
- Wiliam Gibson cyberstuff
- Richard Morgan
- Alastair Reynolds
- Neal Asher
- above 3 very similar if you like enders game you should like 'em.
- Hugh Cook - One of the few fantasy series that work but he's stopped now.
- Whatsisname - 'cryptonomicon' author (other books not as good - and thinking about it, it's not SF)
- Neil Gaiman? I think. He's similiar to Terry Pratchett and Dave Mckean, though they're both more fantasy than SF. You might like Terry Pratchett. Assuming you can expand to fantasy. None of his Discworld books take themselves seriously. ThunderkatzHo! 13:14, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

Delete scientist?[edit]
Scientists is a useful catcher for those who aint strictly definable - what was Newton? Susantalk to me 20:46, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
- According to some, we could just cat him as a creationist. Seriously though, he could be under mathmeticians and (possibly) physicists (didn't the physics of gravity start with him?). ThunderkatzHo! 20:48, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
- We could recreate it, make it a subcat of science, and make all the -ists cats become subcats of it (besides the ones they're already subcats of). Did that make sense? I find myself to be rambling and incoherent today. ThunderkatzHo! 20:52, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
- Unlike some, I like tidy cat trees & think that scientists should exist with t'other ists as sub cats, leaving room for people to be just "scientists" if necessary. Susantalk to me 20:58, 10 October 2007 (EDT)

- Yes it did make sense. I was disappointed to see the Scientists cat. disappear. Reducing the number of cats is ok, but can be taken too far, and I think this is such a case. Lets face it taken to the extreme, we only need one cat., "RW articles", and everything would be in it, the only problem is it is not very useful.--Remarcsd 21:06, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
- OK, I restored scientists, and made Newton its first member. Should the -ists (chemists, biologists, etc.) become subcats of it besides being subcats of their respected science (chemistry, biology, etcology)? ThunderkatzHo! 21:13, 10 October 2007 (EDT)

1) don't be discouraged - you're doing a good job.
2) -ists: yes should be sub cats of scientists (IMO).
3) Newton mainly' a philosopher secondly scientist?
Susantalk to me 21:25, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
- Don't worry, I'm not discouraged (or so vain as to think that every edit I make is perfect). I'll get on adding the ists (though can't right now), though that will create a strange cat tree: science --> branch of science -->-ists, science --> scientists --> ists. ThunderkatzHo! 21:28, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
I realise that my 1) above might sound patronising - not so intended - I really do think you're doing a good job. Cat trees can't be perfect but should always flow in one direction. Eg not recursive (scientist -> biologist -> scientist) Susantalk to me 21:45, 10 October 2007 (EDT).
- Just to chime in here, I see no need for the cats to have a tree structure. They can be more useful if they are web like. Newton - mainly math and physics. Heck, pre-Einstein physics is named after him. And, yes, the "ists" should be in their specialty as well as scientist, etc. Personally, I favor over-catting to under-catting. But that's just me. Say, if I'm reading about Newton, it's cool to be able to leap to all the articles in physics, physicists, mathematicians, mathematics, etc. with ease. Another way to do some of this might be to have template for all science articles with handy major links in it... human 21:49, 10 October 2007 (EDT)

About the bridgedweller[edit]
I know we're not supposed to feed them, but I have a real need to understand where they hell they come from. Also, as someone who used to believe some truly moronic things (and would have been likely to go around the internet and post stupid things, if I'd been able), I have to believe in the ability of people to reform. This will likely be beaten out of me eventually, but for now I have to indulge. Researcher 22:29, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

Removing links from articles[edit]
What's with removing loads of internal links? Please don't do that. ЩєазєюіδMethinks it is a Weasel 18:49, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'm trying to remove links to disambiguation pages that don't belong there. In general, articles shouldn't link to disambiguation pages except for a top line "for other uses of x see here" or sometimes in a see also. If an article talks about Cool Hand Luke, there's no reason to link to our article on the Gospel of Luke. Similarly, if an article mentions the general concept of vaccines and links to "vaccine", but our vaccines page is a disambiguation page with no article about the general concept of vaccines, there's no reason for the link. Most of the things I've been doing have been changing internal links to skip the disambiguation page, but there are some where there's nothing in the disambiguation page that would make sense for the article to link to, so I just remove the link. ThunderkatzHo! 19:59, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- Rubbish. There's nothing wrong with linking to a disambiguation page when it's the most appropriate subject to link to. & What's a fork page now won't necessarily always be one. Subjects like vaccine should really be an article in their own right, but if/when somebody does expand it into an article, it won't help if all the links to it in relevant articles have been replaced. WěǎšěǐǒǐďMethinks it is a Weasel 20:06, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- I disagree completely, but I'm not going to get into a revert war over it, so if you honestly feel that's better I won't stop you. ThunderkatzHo! 20:10, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with both of you. In general, linking to fork/disambig pages is a bad idea, but in cases where there's no better option then you just have to put up with it. It's better to have a link to a vaccine fork page than no link at all. The Luke example though, seems to be pure RW snark. –SuspectedReplicant retire me 20:44, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

"More pared down"[edit]
The work you did on this is awesome. I'm going to have do something very similar to the pages I have online. The only reason I'm not using your versions is that (a) I want the posting dates and (b) it sucks you can't actually show the quoted text. You wouldn't share your regexp magic by any chance? mb 21:49, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's actually not really regex (at least in the way I think of regex). All the pages are set up the same way, so there are certain html tags that appear before discussion title, user name, and message. I basically just set up a python script to look for them (which you can see here) and output the correct lines, and then used some nested bash for loops to go through and apply it to everything. I can look into doing the quoted text and the date stuff. ThunderkatzHo! 23:47, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, date/time was easy, that's just like name. Quoted text might involve some really ugly substring stuff. ThunderkatzHo! 00:10, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- Awesome mate, thank you very much. I've changed my mind on the quoted text thing; it's probably not worth the effort. The threads are not very long; it's almost always reasonably obvious who is replying to what. Does the version of your script I can currently see leave the dates in? I can probably hack this myself if not. It's 2:20 in the morning here in Bulgaria; I'm trying to get everything done before I have to go back to work. :/ mb 00:24, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
