In Memoriam

And have a slice on me!

It seems we have news of your leaving and never coming back. This makes me sad, as we did a lot of work and had a lot of fun together in this little meta-world we shared for a while. I hope those who are mourning your passing in the flesh are doing ok.

I know you probably won't read this, but if you happen to bump into TK in the Great Orange Box in the Sky, slap him for me for you, will ya?

I'll miss you. ħumanUser talk:Human 01:17, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

To you!
You were a great wiki-friend and an all-round classy broad. When you put me on your list of favourite editors, that was cooler than being made a sysop back in the days when that meant a LITTLE something. Goodbye. P-Foster (talk) 01:42, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Fuck, it's just us two? Marganita (whatever your real name is) and Roger, please know that your friend was our friend and was hugely appreciated in many ways over the last few years. I hope, at least, that this place gave her a sense of purpose and outlet and sense of camaraderie in her last years, beyond what you, her real-life friends, provided. ħumanUser talk:Human 06:52, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Maybe we could move the Saloon Bar thread over to here? As for Susan, I didn't really know you at all, but it was always good to see one of the old guard around, and it's always sad to see one go. I hope you enjoyed RW as much as we enjoyed your presence. EddyP Great King! Disaster! 09:02, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

I've got a tear in my eye. Susan/Theresa was a pleasure to know, even if just online. To friends of hers reading this, know that she will be sorely missed by all that met her here. Love and condolences, SJ Debaser 10:29, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

I didn't know her much, only bumbed into her a couple of times. A Toast!

She was one of the first editors here who I shared inside jokes with. She was the one who nominated me for sysop back in the day. When I left this site for a while, she was the one who put my name up in the shrine. This little paragraph for her can't match what she's done for me. She gave this site something special; this place (and I) won't be quite the same without her. With great sadness, goodbye. ThunderkatzHo! 03:52, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Susan was a great contributor to RationalWiki and a great battler in her fight with cancer. Like me, she had little patience with the congenitally religious. So long kiddo, I'll miss you.  Lily Inspirate me. 07:50, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
As a fellow member of the "Dreaded Gang of Four" I will miss Susan/Toast very much both on and off wiki; we got along very well. My condolences go out to Jayne who helped her through her battle with cancer. I shall raise a glass of her favourite Ardbeg in her memory and propose that February 24 be RationalWiki Toast day. I don't know whether or not there is such a thing as an afterlife, Susan. I doubt many here believe that there is. It always struck me as a bit strange that anyone should talk to the dead, but there is something I've kinda wanted to tell ya for a while now, so I guess I will just go ahead and do it.

You are the one who wrote Help:Lurking in the summer of 2007. I didn't know about this place back then, of course; I was only 9 years old. And I know that this place was started as a bit of a joke among friends so I doubt you thought about this at the time, but a long time after you made that page and years after you had passed away, I would stumble across it. I would stumble across it in the middle of the night, dithering about whether or not I should sign up here and I would smile. "The person who dropped this here was a mind reader, or something? That's exactly what I'm doing."

It's crazy to think that the words we all write here will be seen in the future by someone. By people we will never meet. By people we will never know. I sometimes skim through RationalWiki:How I found RationalWiki and some of the things I read make me sad for people who are little more than just signatures on a website. People whose parents are religious fundamentalists, people who had friends and family fall prey to conspiracy theories, people who were feeling a bit down while browsing the internet and were grateful for the jokes.

I'm not a good editor Susan, so I doubt this will happen to me, but I would like to hope that maybe, many years down the line, something I wrote on this website will make someone smile. Something that came off my keyboard will sail off into the future and find a stranger who will appreciate it. Even after we are gone, even though they might not know about us, we might be able to leave something behind for those who come afterwards.

This place you made with your friends when I was just a little kid would go on to help me quite a bit. And I know many others who feel the same way. I have caught glimpses of them in other parts of the internet, making throwaway remarks of how great RationalWiki is. And it's just a silly little website, but it matters to so many people and it wouldn't have come to be without someone like you. So thank you. For every joke, for every fact, for every lesson.

Thank you. - Rairyu75 (Talk) 03:38, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
